John Candy's time at the top didn't last all that long - he unexpectedly died in 1994. His surprisingly early death was one final tragedy in a life often overshadowed with struggle and sadness. Here's a look at the sometimes difficult and challenging life of John Candy.
Tragedy struck John Candy at an early age, upending his young life and leaving behind a specter of sadness and loss. Candy was born in 1950 to middle-class parents Evangeline and Sidney Candy, Sidney earning a living as a car salesman in Toronto. When John Candy was just 5 years old and his brother, Jim, was 6, Sidney Candy unexpectedly died from complications of heart disease at only 35.
According to Laughing on the Outside: The Life of John Candy, Evangeline Candy had little choice but to make the economical decision to move her family away. She took her two young kids to a very small bungalow in the working-class Toronto borough of East York, which they shared with John Candy's grandparents and aunt. The knowledge that his father died from a delicate heart stuck with Candy for his entire life. According to family members, it was always in the back of his mind, and he ultimately couldn't escape it.

In the US, they ask: “where were you when Elvis died?” In Canada, we ask: “where were you when John Candy died?” It was such a sudden and tragic loss to the world. Your roles kept me and my family laughing and happy in good times and in some rough times also. Not only were you a great actor, but a great father, husband, and person in general. RIP John. We miss you. Hopefully you are making people laugh in heaven.

In 1979 I was in grade 9 and had a part time job at a place in Toronto called Mother's Sandwich Shop. John would come in really late after shooting SCTV. I remember his order was extra meatball sub with a chocolate shake. He would sit in a booth and wait to take it with him. Once he left me a $100.00 bill tip which I asked him to sign. I still have it. I loved this guy who was the kindest man with a big heart. He invited me to a private party with the SCTV crew at a pinball arcade called Funland which was downtown on younge Street Toronto. Great actor, still sadly missed. Loved Uncle Buck and Trains boats and plains - but my favorite of all was 'Only the lonely'. Such a lovely portrayal of a man who wanted to do his best for a demanding mum and the love of his life. Great acting. Miss you big guy.

John Candy is an absolute legend of an actor. Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Summer Rental, Delirious, Splash, Once Upon a Crime, The Great Outdoors, Brewster’s Millions, Stripes, Cool Runnings are the films imo were the films he really starred as an amazing actor. Though as others have commented he was gr8 in others. Brilliant actor and will never be forgotten who love the films he starred in.

His death in 1994 was a shock because I just watched every episode there ever was on Camp Candy and didn't think he had a chance in heck to leave so soon, especially before his kids' high school graduation.

I was devastated when he died. I was 16 at the time and am now 43, the same age he was when he passed away. Looking back, it was such a massive loss. He was a naturally funny and talented actor and a great person. He unfortunately could not control his weight in the last few years of his life. It reportedly climbed up to 375 pounds at the time of his death. He left behind a loving family and I'm sure they all miss him, as we, his fans, do as well.

TIL: Young John Candy looked a lot like Bill Hicks. Serious note, him as Del Griffith changed the way I look at movies. He obviously had Funny down to a T... but if you don't wanna cry, and the end of Planes, Trains & Automobiles... you are a cyborg, and I can't understand you because you speak binary. He absolutely destroys you, in that scene. But to go from so light-hearted and funny, to so sorrowful and heart-felt in the same movie, shouldn't be ignored. RIP John Candy

Look when I die I would hope that an autopsy would be done to rule out any foul play like cyanide or anything else a cause should be necessary 🤷 nobody should dictate whether or not an autopsy should be done up until now I thought they did them automatically ⚰️if somebody poisoned somebody I loved I would want to know but hey that's just me.

There might not be an actor/comedian that is as unanimously loved as John Candy. He’s on that short list of people that you never hear anything negative said about them or parodied in a mocking or negative manner. I think it’s pretty much just him, Tom Hanks, and Michael J. Fox.

Cool Runnings was also one of his last movies. I didn't notice it mentioned in this but you can't get every detail and I may have just missed it being mentioned. John Candy was one of the best Canadian actors, one of the best actors, I've ever seen. He has been a major impact to Canadian actors and comedians for many years even after his death. I am glad his children and wife have been able to get into the field as well. He had such charm and was so sweet in interviews. He's been missed and will be missed for a long time.
