No way this band could have continued without Bonham. The signature Zep sound is the way Page conforms his riffs and phrasing to Bonham’s drum patterns. The synchronization was just so tight.

@@samr.england613 hey I understand the sarcasm, but truthfully the way Page locked in with Bonham for all aspects of his playing really gave Zeppelin some unique sounds that other bands emulated. Seems kind of obvious, I agree, but my real point is that Page needed Bonham.

I knew from the first time I heard this song, studio recording, that Bonham played bass drum part constant as we're all hearing it in his isolated part. When I tried playing it in several bands I've been in, every fucking guitar player always tried telling me the bass drum wasn't that "busy." I always knew I was correct about how it was played by Bonham, even I couldn't actually hear the bass drums constant, I could definitely feel it.

Some bands are not "drum minded". Like you say, my band cover songs by others, me on drums. "Oh, that's too busy, can you sort- of play less beats?", they moan. "That's how they play it on the record, I've been listening to this since I was twelve, 52 years ago. Huh?" So I do, dumb it down to keep the peace in rehearsal. Then we do a gig and I play it as full-on, as close to the original, and none of them even notices. And I think, if I rammed a drumstick right through their skull, in one earole and out the other, it might improve their act. But, you know, what's a drummer? "Someone who hangs out with musicians". Bastards!

Yes, revelatory! For the genius of Page's production and micing techniques, one thing that they always struggled with was keeping the bass drum articulate in the mix once the band was roaring with him. Mostly that open tuning and the sheer size of the drum I assume. Hard to say whether it detracts any, in my opinion. Just hard to hear trying to learn parts from the albums 30 years ago from the cassettes.

To everyone saying he doesn't play the ghost notes on the snare, wrong. If you really listen, it's there. Also, keep in mind, this isn't isolated, it's sound reduction. And thirdly, there video evidence of him ghosting the snare drum to 8th notes live. Hate to say it, but this is just the untrained ear missing it. Bonham ghosts the snare the entire time.

@onemoremisfit
@onemoremisfit 6 ай бұрын
The tom is on a stand because the mounting hardware is not used, it is just sticking out sideways and not connected to anything. There is a cowbell mounted on the bass drum right behind that unused mounting hardware on the tom so it looks like the tom mount is connected to something but it's not.

Lots of bands that I’ve played this with over the year’s, even with my teenage band for a school variety show. I learned so much from John, and recall working the intro and it hit me….he begins on beat 4! The bass drum is 4 on the floor and dynamic’s, and most importantly, John leads with his left as many Scottish, Irish, UK drummers do. This is the key to make those magnificent fill’s fit! My first formal teacher taught left hand leading and it’s made life easier…especially in Pipe Bands! ❤

He actually starts on '3 and' whereas most drummers I've played with started on 1. This always caused a train wreck when the rest of the band came in at the end of the intro. Jason Bonham did a tutorial on the intro and it's actually modeled after the old vaudeville echo intro which is much easier to play along to in your head than just counting, for example: DEE DEE DEE DEE da da da da etc

@mb7196
@mb7196 6 ай бұрын
@@johngalush8790 no. That's clearly the bass drum. Snare ghost notes would never sound like bass drum hits. He's clearly playing bass drum beats on those 1/8ths. They're unison HH BD beats, with snare on 2 and 4. It's not that difficult. A lot of the "and" beats (1 e & a) are simply lower dynamically. Bass drum "ghost notes". The song remains the same version is a simply a live version and he changes it there because it's just easier for him to play it that way. It's very common for musicians to play simplified versions of things live compared to what they laid down on the albums. The studio you have many chances if you make a mistake. Or he simply had his chops up to that level for the album but didn't for the song remains the same. Or simply didn't care and chose the easier way because, why not. Could be many reasons he decided to do it differently.

@@jameslane4193 I don't think it's shuffle derrivitive either. But Bonham ghosts the snare on every song he's ever played. It's not a half time shuffle. It's just a straight 8th note pattern with that straight/swung Bonham feel. And he's ghosting most of the snare notes. It's just a busy drum part.
@polara01
@polara01 3 жыл бұрын
@@SirMan48 I tend to agree with you on this because on something this loud it is really futile to do ghost notes on a song like this so I think you are correct he had to step up his left hand to be heard a little better because how do you do ghost notes when everybody's voluming out to like + 10. The ghosts noting that bottom would typically do would be more meaningful and noticeable at the beginning of a song like Since I've Been Loving You where those are true ghost notes because everything is subtle and the music is not overbearing to wear the Ghost Notes would be irrelevant anyway because nobody would ever hear them especially on the song like rock and roll ghost noting it's just basically a waste of time so I agree with you here totally even though people can philosophize that those are ghost notes but when you have to actually hammer down on them just to be heard they become a little bit more of a shuffly type thing as opposed to something that's just articulating/supporting the pattern a little more with a little extra spice Swinging The Rhythm. With this song it's just balls out take no prisoners super hard driving beat but Bonham still found a way to swing it which very few drummers (even good ones) would find a way to swing this song but the beauty of this isolated track is you can hear Bonham swinging things even if everything on top is drowning it out... It's like an archaeological dig that we just discovered and it shows that no matter what's going up on top Bonham is still swinging his ass off even when he didn't have to. The secret sauce here is in the pulse he uses which is pretty much undetectable from the surface and after 50 years of listening to this I never noticed it until I heard this track and I am very grateful for that because it is basically a game-changer for this song you have to think about this song when you're sitting behind that kid in a different way now then it will really f*** you up when you first try to do it because it has a slightly different Rhythm to it and the irony is if you play this to an audience they probably won't even hear it because of how loud everybody basically is in this track but nevertheless as a drummer when you bring that spirit to this piece I think it will make a difference in rub off in the overall effect and therein lies some of the magic dust that we can actually attempt to recreate... at least have a hell of a great time trying lol...

The best thing that I think worked in Bonham's favor was his love and admiration for Buddy Rich. It shows in his attack and right down to his 26 inch kick.

This is not Bonham except for the intro and the drum solo outro. Bonham did play 16th notes on the snare and high hat. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJatnHebrM2He9k

That’s what I was wondering. Is this actually Bonham all of the way through? I do hear music in the back but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Bonham on the verses. I’m married to a recording engineer so don’t barrage me with all of the theories. I’m wondering if it is Bonzo, I hear a difference.

Oh! and @Channeling, the theory comment wasn’t directed at you, I agree with you. This is meant for everyone who gets outraged that I doubt it’s Bonham.

The downbeat of this intro is not where most drummers place it. It’s an interpretation of Johnny B. Goode on a drum kit! Listen/analyze....

Drummers tell me all the time, “that’s an easy one, 1,2,3,4 dah, dah, dah... and guitars players step on their dick half the time coming in on time. It totally cheapens the genius of the song....

QUESTION: Does anybody know on what take Bonzo laid down this particular track? Was it first take? After many takes? What’s the story there?

For a song like this and just knowing the band, I would be surprised if the band didn't do the song live in the studio. Not saying they did only one take, but I would bet the basic track is live (drums, bass, rhythm guitar), with overdubbed lead and fills guitars, etc...and vocals done last. Just a guess though.
