The biggest flex in this video is trusting your percussionist to keep Tempo without looking at the conductor
@atechnews3221
@atechnews3221 Ай бұрын
i'm not a musician or anything far near that, but i think that everything is meant to be in tempo/sync with the drummer in the front, i.e everything else has to sync with him regardless of what he does. correct me if i got it wrong. edit: he is the conductor if that makes sense??
@jsonparrish1545
@jsonparrish1545 Ай бұрын
@atechnews3221 but that's my point you have to trust your drummer to not Rush the tempo because you want your winds to catch their breaths when necessary not only that but to have him not even have the conductor in eyesight is something to be proud of as a conductor Percussion usually keeps tempo naturally if that makes sense but as a percussionist myself we do get out of hand
@Dimi0045
@Dimi0045 Ай бұрын
@@jsonparrish1545the conductor is following the tempo given by the percussion in this case. Look at 2:45 the percussionist is specifically looking at the one in the front to know when to restart. So if the one in front slows down the conductor and the other will follow, if he speeds up so will the rest. The impressive thing is how well he is able to lead.

I'm having a nerd out with this performance, not just from a One Piece stand point but from a music nerd stand point. Each drum present in at the front are from different cultures: taiko drum (japan), congo drum (cuba), bongo drum (afro-cuban), snare drum (swiss), timpani (italy), wood blocks (chinese). Five drums from different cultures that have their own unique sounds combined together to make a unified beat for the 'drums of liberation' theme. That is an amazing level of depth to this theme.
@itsSmiv
@itsSmiv 9 ай бұрын
A fair amount of misinformation here. Congas and bongos are both afro-cuban. The snare drum doesn't originate from any specific country, and timps aren't italian, only their name is. I agree that the variety of percussion is cool, but that's just how almost any percussion-heavy orchestral piece works. Percussion in general is just full of different cultures; unless the composer intentionally chooses everything from one culture, it'll just naturally have lots of variety.

@@itsSmiv thank you. Would you consider this a samba? I'm honestly interested in what style this is and you seem competent
@itsSmiv
@itsSmiv 9 ай бұрын
@@xmobstersal4167 the rhythm is somewhat similar to a samba, I'd say it's samba-esque. But a true samba would need to have something mimicing the important instruments in a samba; most importantly the Surdo, pandeiro/caixa, and repinique, but this doesn't really do any samba rhythms from those instruments. Overall I don't think this necessarily falls into one specific style. I'd honestly say overall this is more of a march, but I can definitely hear some samba qualities to it. Sorry that I can't give a concrete answer to your question lmao.
@xmobstersal4167
@xmobstersal4167 9 ай бұрын
@@itsSmiv haha you did great I appreciate it. My drum instructor told me to pick up a samba jam to learn as it will "open doors" . As a one piece lover this song came to mind immediately, I think I can convince him it's close enough 😅
@itsSmiv
@itsSmiv 9 ай бұрын
@@xmobstersal4167 that might be a little tough to convince him on lmaoo, but i hope he accepts it, that'd be cool. You could always tweak it a little bit to make it even more samba-like. The surdo is basically a Brazilian bass drum, so you could change the bass drum part to be more of a surdo groove. Either just light hits on each beat, or dotted 8th + 16th note for each beat. I'd recommend the latter. The most important thing for making the groove sound like a samba, though, is to dampen the hits (place a hand on the drum head while you hit it) for beats 1+3, and do undampened hits for beats 2+4. Maybe if you tell your teacher that you'd add that in, it might convince him a little more. Hope this helps!

This was a high quality performance, but the fact that the attention to detail and respect is evident throughout the video through the choices they made, improved the experience for me. For instance the conductor chose to wear Chopper’s hat (who is a doctor), tells me they also enjoy one piece. To feel united to a random group of people like this through drums of liberation is just what the essence of one piece is about and something that gave me goosebumps ❤

They did pretty well. They were still a little too rigid in their interpretation though, in my opinion. It needed more bounce. And maybe it was just the way it was recorded, but they shouldn’t have covered up the brass, strings and winds. They were barely audible at parts. Yes, the percussion is a focal point, but let’s not forget the x Overtaken parts of the song. The brass at least should have been just as strong.

...You coulda said the music team for the anime, dude. Oda's actually talked in author's notes about how he worked with a composer to get a theme to go with his "Bink's Sake" lyrics because he couldn't write or play music. Oda writes and draws the manga (with many assistants and editors and so on also involved). He's probably consulted for the anime from time to time, and he speaks positively of it when he mentions it at all, but he's not exactly got a hand in the anime production process. Don't give credit to the wrong person and the try to pretend you meant to do that. If it's really that you didn't know who to name, then name 'em for what they do: the person that composed the music, the ochestra that played it for the anime, the team that recorded it and mixed it into the soundtrack, the storyboarders and fight choreographers and directors and animators that made the epic visuals to match...

It's probably on the animation side, not just oda. But i guess oda made specifications like it must be festive and is related to beating (since his gears from 2nd to 5th are related with blood, bones, muscles, and heart, respectively), like beating of the heart. It's just a really simple correlation of things. Oda cooked simply but magnificently

No idea when OP became so popular in the west. I started watching OP early 2000. When kids were watching pokemon and Digimon, I was watching OP and Naruto.

I think it started with the pandemic. The 4kids dub ruined any early chance for OP to be as big as naruto or FMA.

@crows6591 I can never watch dubs. There were no streaming sites back then.m and dsl wouldn't allow video streaming anyway. We pirate new episodes weekly. Asian subs are the best. Accurately capture some contexts that can't be translated through english. Now I settle with English subs for convenience.

Great performance. It started to speed up in the beginning there and we’re getting off the beat, but you got back into it. It was for only a couple of beats. Most people probably wouldn’t have noticed. 7 years in concert band, 4 years in symphonic band, 2 in jazz band, and 3 in marching band you start to easily pick up on these things.
