Thank you so much for breaking this down. Back when Led Zep II first came out we played it to death on a hill in San Francisco. I've been on and off the drums since the mid 60's and 2 weeks ago I bit the bullet and bought the custom Bonham maple kit with the 26 inch kick drum. I don't have the 6-1/2 inch snare, but may make a trade for one soon. I have subscribed to your channel too. :^)

The ghost notes are always on the 'e' or the 'a', so it's the former (RlRl) , but the ghosts only go every so often. Definitely the 'e' of 1 and the 'e' and 'a' of 2. Of couse the 2 is a snare with the left so you get 2 quick snare notes on the 2 and its 'e'.

My ex father-in-law played a Ludwig set in high school. He was always a fan of huge kits like what Neil Peart had saying how he could essentially create a whole song on them. But my thing is, if you have 5 piece kit and play it and make it sound huge, who cares about big 9 piece and bigger kits.

3:24 in the studio at the start of the interlude, bonham hit the edge of the cymbals with the sticks, stick and cymbal perpendicular to each other. give it another listen.

You definitely have the 'Bonzo Sound' down, but main verse is played with 8th notes on the hats but counted in sixteenth for the bass drum and accents: b= bass s= snare 1 e an da 2 e an da 3 e an da 4 e an da b b s b b b b b s Seeing Bonham's drum transcriptions is a real eye opener. He was a genius fitting drum grooves to Page's twisted guitar figures. He was precise and almost surgical with his fills. An amazing and dynamic techinician!! Rock On!!

Somebody else posted Bonham's isolated studio track. You can really hear the nuances such as ghost notes. I'm a bassist but I love to listen to Bonham. Love his feel and tone and you sound just like him.

I have been trying to find the exact cymbals used in this song I swear they're so much more different. They don't sound like any cymbal I've researched. It's such a nice, bright sounding crash. Exactly what kind of cymbal I would want.

Your videos absolutely rule!! I loved the Fool in the Rain Video, and based on your video, was able to learn it, and can now play it effortlessly. I was hoping the same result for this one, however you don't break this beat (the main beat)down in as much detail, such as playing each part (Hi-Hat, Bass drum, Snare) separately. So it's hard for me to decipher (I'm really a guitarist) if there's ghost notes on the snare, or exactly what the hi-hat is doing. Bass drum I got. But when I play it, it just doesn't have the same feel as yours, and Bonham's. So, are there ghost notes on the snare? and is the hi-hat just a steady 1-2-3-4....?

Thank you, B-I'm glad it was helpful. Sorry this one isn't as much. Think of the snare ghosts as if you're playing slightly swung 16th with left hand on snare (the es and ahs). It's not ghosted each and every time but enough to convey a slight swung chug a lug. In the drums only thats floating around ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/apW3Y4yNgtaqa6M ) you don't really hear it though.

Im glad to see theres someone else just as obsessed with bonham as i am.Hes the greatest. hands down. I idolize his playing so much and i try to always play to where people can tell i have a heavy bonham influence. Its always a chalenge learning his grooves and fills and just his whole style. I have the mans symbol tattooed on my shoulder for gods sake! Just my two cents..between the accented hits during the guitar solo, i think he chucks in ghost notes on the snare! like ONE-e(ghost)-a(ghost)-A and also rather emphasises the accents more on the kick and the tom. Otherwise, great walk through, you do justice do Bonham's groove!

This is great!! Nailed the groove. I think this is why Bonham sounds so good and has so much feel. Just like the Bernard Purdie inspired groove he played this has lots of ghost notes and creates its own echo or call and response. To me that is what Bonham was great at. Invoking a feel and a groove from the bottom up as John Paul Jones describes it. One of the best rhytyhm sections in rock!!! Lots o funk and groove and big band swing influence from these British rock drummers like Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Ian Paice and Ginger Baker. I think this is where Neil Peart was heading after studying with Freddie Gruber.

Drums sound great, but you REALLY need a mic - vocals go in and out badly, are almost never leveled with drums, and sometimes are not audible at all. Just a suggestion.

It's a 26 kick. The ride is a Paiste 404 22 inch RIDE, the crash is an 18 inch Paiste PST 5 CRASH/RIDE. The hats are 15 inch Paiste 505 MED Bottom and an Alpha BAND top.

It's just 16th notes 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a but it starts on the 'e' of 2. So after the last 'boom,boom' on the snare/ft/bass combo (which land on 1 and the 'a' of 1), the snare roll comes in on the e of the following 2 and goes trough to the downbeat. So you have the 'boob-boom' on the 1 and the 'a' of 1 a couple times, then right after the last 'boom-boom' you have : e&a3e&a4e&a (on snare) DOWNBEAT on the 1. Does that make sense? Is that the part you're asking about?

Start by playing beats (any simple drum beat) with your left hand on the hi hat (instead of your right). Start at a slow tempo and play for as long as you can until your left hand feels funky. Take a break and start up again. Fight the urge to think "This sucks-I can't do it!". KEEP DOING IT. KEEP DOING IT. KEEP DOING IT.

I'm a late baby boomer guitar player, nurtured on L.Z., Z.Z., and Z(appa).. to name a few.. (No zzz's intended) I attempt to coach my 12 year old son about drum beats and grooves. I've always felt that Bonham's grooves sound to the layman, much differently than what is actually going on, which is PURE PERCUSSION GENIUS! Terry the outro (after the cymbal tings into the triplet pattern) between the guitar is actually swung as "dagada da" with the emphasis on the first part of 'da' and the 2nd 'da' not "dum dum" as everybody thinks; listen carefully you can hear it on the isolated track. Another typical Bonzo subtlety that is lost under the guitar.

I can't get over how crisp your kit sounds, very nice job with the video. Also I know what you were saying about zildjian cymbals and how their bell sounds as opposed to paiste. Most likely explains why I have all zildjians except my ride, 20'' paiste. You explain bonham's techniques very clearly so it was easy to learn, keep it up!

I wanna thank for all that great work you do. Your videos became an inspiration for me to listen to LZ more and grab Bonzo's ideas for my playing. Here the thing - it seems to me that after the part with hi-hat and percussion and some feedback or whatever it is (you start playing it at 4:16 in your video here) Bonzo plays it like a group of four sixteenth notes with snare and bass on 1 & 4 and ghost notes on snare on 2 & 3. Can it be so? Sorry if someone asked this before. Thnx again!

But now for the question, do you have any tips on any good exercises top build up the speed on your left hand? For that 16 note feel, it sounds so damn good when you add those in almost any song.

Just to clarify, I'm sure you've all heard versions of this song where the drums lead or the guitar or voice does. LZ was not very disciplined live. It was always better with Bonham leading and setting the tone. Him and the bass player. Then the guitar and voice.
