I like how this guy talks in general. He's very effective because he doesn't speak in a way where he loses you with complicated analogies and talk that diverts the conversation in a place where you want to search for another video. He can connect real life with fictional characters in a way unheard of to me. DAMN GOOD INTERVIEW!!!!!

I like that the interviewer asks his question, and then, he just sits back, and let's him answer! He just let's him go on and give a full, in depth answer! So many of these interviewers only let them get out a sentence or two, then they cut them off by asking another question, never allowing them to finish. This guy is perfect! I'm loving these in depth answers!

awesome story about John and Kit's friendship blossoming while they were scared and vulnerable. it parallels their characters (they became each other's first friends) “Fat and awkward and frightened he might be, but Samwell Tarly was no fool. One night he visited Jon in his cell. “I don’t know what you did,” he said, “but I know you did it.” He looked away shyly. “I’ve never had a friend before.” “We’re not friends,” Jon said. He put a hand on Sam’s broad shoulder. “We’re brothers.” And so they were, he thought to himself after Sam had taken his leave. Robb and Bran and Rickon were his father’s sons, and he loved them still, yet Jon knew that he had never truly been one of them. Catelyn Stark had seen to that. The grey walls of Winterfell might still haunt his dreams, but Castle Black was his life now, and his brothers were Sam and Grenn and Halder and Pyp and the other castouts who wore the black of the Night’s Watch. “My uncle spoke truly,” he whispered to Ghost. He wondered if he would ever see Benjen Stark again, to tell him. (AGOT, Jon IV)

That was quite literally one of my favorite interviews i've ever seen. Since most interviews are cookie cutter, quick, and clickbaitish. This interview, even though it seems like it could be exhausting for John, is what fans truly want to see. Quips and funny stories from celebs is fun once and awhile, but this type of and almost personal conversation with the audience is what makes me want to follow him throughout his career.

24:50 It’s strange he mentions the battle of the bastards because that was one of my first experiences with GOT. My sister was crazy about the show and really wanted me to start watching it. Sam was the saver of mankind on the show. He was the one who found the dragon glass dagger and know what it is, kill a white walker and later find out where it can be found. He stood up for Jon and got him elected, Jon got the wildings to fight beside them because he was the commander. Sam was very very important in the show.

What a beautiful interview. I say beautiful because I got to hear about the creation of an actor in a way that I have never heard before. And John spoke eloquently, thoughtfully, truthfully and humbly about his growth and craft. He gave credit where credit was due. I have heard virtually all of the GOT cast talk about the brilliant people behind the scenes. I've always liked Sam's character. GOT would not have been the same without him. I really enjoyed watching what happened at the Wall and the far North because of the actors and storyline and came to really care about every character: Pip, Grenn, Ed (one of my favorites) Sam, Jon, Commander Mormont, Maester Aamon and of course the cast of wildlings/free folk. They brought the brilliant writing of Mr. Martin. Best of luck John. I wish there had been a way for us to see the entire cast of The Night's Watch gathered together for an interview.

33:56 You are SO right. The show will live forever; but, the suspense of waiting between seasons, theorizing who will 'win the game', deciphering characters motives, and reading into the books for more history and details... and the GoT community online really has made this show a deep, interactive experience that is one of a kind. GRRM has written a masterpiece and the actors have really breathed life into the characters. Game of Thrones is life. -John, you were awesome to listen to! I think he got the job right out of drama school just because...the man IS Samwell Tarly. The way he speaks about how he wasn't thinking he could possibly ever get the part and that he was just focused on trying not to embarrass himself...that's why he got it. Because that's what Sam would have been thinking, too. He's very intellectual and well spoken but with a nervous little stammer, just like Sam is. They really nailed the casting for this show. I can't imagine them interacting with him for the first time and thinking anything other than "clearly this is Samwell Tarly made flesh".

I don't get people who don't like Sam and Gilly. Those two are consistently a respite from the darkness and heaviness of the show, an often light and lovely palate cleanser that relaxes me in between grisly scenes of rapes and beheadings and whatnot.

i left this interview running as i did some of my university work, and I loved it. John's voice is so soothing and pleasant. One could hear for days a podcast from him i swear

I totally agree with John. I usually like to binge watch episodes and refer to not watch them live because i hate having to wait but with GoT, the anticipation is unparalleled, i have to see it same time.

Wow, John described it so perfectly - from 33:50 till 36:00 - the atmosphere that is there right now globally, this anticipation that will be gone in just a while, so ephemeral and unique...

34:40 It’s SO true. *GoT* is basically sports. People clamour to see it live, as a communal experience.

The guy in the Audience saying "Yeah" multiple times at the same time over and over again should be punished with the walk of atonement

I think it's the interviewer saying "yeah" every time. Whenever John is answering the question, they probably turn the interviewer's microphone off so when he speaks out during John's talk, it sounds like it comes from someone in the audience. Edit: I just noticed in the video that the interviewer puts his mic down when John talks, so there's the answer.
