What I would do to just sit down with John in this kind of setting and just riff along with him, pick his brain about his approach to writing riffs from scratch and just jam a bit. Maybe get something from it to add to my own bag of tricks. That'd be a pretty sweet deal. I absolutely love playing with guitarists who are better than me and I love the process of learning how to play riffs that I didn't personally write but that I instantly enjoy and connect with when I hear them. I've been in bands where I was the "better" guitarist and all the riff writing duties fell pretty much on my shoulders alone, and I would be the only one bringing ideas to rehearsals(those bands didn't last long) and I've been in bands where I absolutely was NOT the better/more experienced guitarist. Being in a situation where you're not the one doing all the writing feels so much better, it really drives you to improve your own playing when there's that healthy bit of competition there between guitarists where you're both pushing each other to improve, and you're constantly bouncing ideas off each other. There's this situation that can happen in bands where another musician just meshes with you naturally, without having to really work at it much. They know where you're trying to go with an idea before you do. Whether it's the other guitarist, or a drummer, whatever. It's an awesome situation to find yourself in. Bit of a random anecdote but other guitarists or people who've played in bands will know what I mean. Anyway, I love John's work and his ear for melodies. Same with Monuments as a whole. It's been really inspiring. When I first heard their song Atlas a couple years back, it pretty much made me stop what I was doing and start writing new music for the first time in a good bit because I was in a bit of a rut.

going more into detail with the drummer analogy when he was speaking about consistency was he referring to the the gallops being consistent with how hard they are hit i.e volume (however I heard an engineer saying that hitting the hardest doesn't always give the biggest sound) character (texture, timbre) or rhythm? .....also which out of volume, charater and rhythm is more a problem when hitting harder when this consistency problem arises with alternate picking?

The headstock looks stretched because of the lens that’s being used. Wide angle lenses tend to distort or warp things on the horizon of the frame depending on how wide the lens actually is, and how it’s produced. The farther something is from the center, the more drastic the effect will be. Like the whole fisheye thing, just much less drastic. Notice how they’re both using a Duvell yet the body on John’s looks way bigger than on Trey’s?
