I love that both of the top 2 most popular videos this College's Engineering channel has is literally just John Carmack being filmed talking. Is Carmack our era's Isaac Newton? I think he's in the discussion. Almost no one today has brought together a vision of so many areas of scientific expertise to fundamentally change industries. John Carmack *requires* hardware acceleration to play Quake3, revolutionizing gaming, creating the GPU industry, massively influenced Microsoft's approach to DirectX, creating a huge leap forward in how software interacts with hardware. That GPU industry inadvertently extinguishes the existence of one of the most wonderful and epic heavy lifters of all time, Silicon Graphics, which we should all have nothing but respect for, but whose approach was made obsolete by Carmack, Nvidia, ATI and 3DFX's pursuit of $150 GPUs to play Quake3. A few years later CUDA is unveiled, and from it modern Machine Learning makes the leap from theory to reality, all borne out of this GPU industry, along with computer vision, self driving cars, and now OpenAI. This reminds me of the similar flurry of technological advancement that directly followed Newton publishing the Principia which unleashed Calculus on the world.

@@ProHumanity his speeches are charming, he radiates passion for knowledge ( the 'unscripted' live videos he made for oculus, now meta, are fantastic and really honest... not marketing speeches ) He would have been an incredible professor

I love John Carmack and i love that to see someone who actually deserve a Honorary Degree, gets it. But i think his advises here... is exactly what took him to divorce, so ... i think you can always do what he does, thake everything th its core... you will be better for that, but i think as humans beings, we need to try to find the balance between actually living and working.
