While John Carpenter wrote about 8 minutes or so of mostly low atmospheric synth sounds for the movie, actually only the first 1:45 minutes of this clip are by John Carpenter; the rest of the music heard here is from Ennio Morricone's score for THE THING (re-performed).

I read an interview with John Carpenter in which he said Ennio Morricone composed the music that plays over the opening credits. Morricone asked him what he wanted and Carpenter said "spooky electronic music."

An amazing number of people miss what The Thing really was drawing its themes from. It's pure, undiluted *Lovecraft.* The movie (and short story) were modern retellings of *At the Mountains of Madness.* The Thing itself was a classic Lovecraft Eldritch Abomination - nobody has ever done as good a job as Stan Winston and Rob Bottin did in creating an honest to God *Eldritch horror* for the big screen. The Dog-Thing is, was, and remains absolutely terrifying, and so utterly alien the human mind is benumbed looking at it. Little wonder that the only person that reacted rationally to it was drunk out of his gourd. I used the theme to open my Call of Cthulhu games. It never failed to set the bleak, paranoid tone that Lovecraft - and John Carpenter - intended.

Amazing soundtrack! I love both John Carpenter's film and the prequel, which I thought was amazingly true and honoring of its source and was seamlessly connected to the original. It is great watching them in temporal order of the story. Next, I'd love to see the sequel to both. Both exceeded the original black and white film, which I still actually love.

Man, what the heck? I just checked out The Thing soundtrack, the re-done one by Alan Howarth. Its wrong! Why did he redo it? The quarter notes in the main theme riff (bom bom...bom bom…) has too many notes. I’m so disappointed that he messed it up. I'm talking about after a few bars of the first "bom bom"s, when the quarter notes start underneath the main notes. Too many! Its simply wrong.

That electronic cathedral organ.... unimaginable horror.
@johnlaslett53393 жыл бұрын
The real horror is paranoia. They all go from being long time friends and colleagues to not trusting and killing each other. Clarks death was at the hands of mcready not the thing. And he died coz he went to stab Mac. Everything about this film is a hands over mouth waiting for something to happen. The way the dog creeps about and watches them from the window when they bring back the burnt pieces of the thing. A very scary and creepy film and my absolute favourite horror film of all. I saw it when I was 6 when i sneakily watched it from the hall while my parents were watching it 😂😂. And loved it from then
@eddiebrown6872 жыл бұрын
Well put. Also, the dog was part wolf and hadn't been trained that long. I read where they said they gave him a lot of room, he had a look about him that let you know he was still part wolf...kinda scary.
@nathanwygal55266 жыл бұрын
The opening title theme sounds the same. The two main themes are the same arrangement, but not the same sounding as they were heard in the film. In the film, it's Ennio's original Humanity Part 2 minus the latter half of the song that goes ape shit with the organ. Carpenter probably had Ennio loop it back to where it would end the same way it began... Thump thump, thump thump, thump thump... - END - I think there are some tracks that should have been used in the film that were recently used in Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, especially Morricone's Eternity. That song sounds super Escape from New York-esque.
