Fun fact: there’s an Antarctic research base that has an annual tradition of watching The Thing and its prequel after the last flight has left for the winter.

The tragedy with the prequel was that IT WAS SUPPOSED to have practical effects. But then it was scrapped at the last minute by studio execs. On KZbin there’s tons of cut footage of the practical effects.

More than likely the reason why they have dynamite and so much of it as well as flamethrowers is to blast and burn large blocks of snow and ice.
@freakyzed84673 жыл бұрын
I wondered about that too. I can see the dynamite for ice clearing, but the flamethrowers always bothered me. Someone told me it was for deicing equipment but that always seemed extreme to me. Flamethrowers used to thaw a helicopter seems a bit....off.

Had a copy of this I recorded off TV back when it first came out. Was an alternate ending that showed the smoking ruins of the facility and a husky running away, stopping to look back, then running off again. Think Carpenter wanted things to be more ambiguous so he scrubbed that ending from the canon.

the ending isn't ambiguous. oscar (keith david) doesn't have frosty breath. he's an alien. they kind of implied that macready (kurt russell) isn't as smart as he'd like to think he is when at the beginning he was so sure he had the computer beat at chess and then unexpectedly lost. also, if there was a chance that oscar was infected, for everyone else's sake, macready needed to kill him. he's shown that he's willing to kill people to maintain order. the fact that he didn't and chose to froze to death with him at the end has me a little puzzled. it doesn't make sense with what they showed of him earlier in the film. was oscar unarmed at the end. i think so, but i don't remember. before the two of them split up, didn't they both have flame throwers?
@the_once-and-future_king.3 жыл бұрын
That's an urban myth. You can see his breath in some shots, it's just not always obvious because of the lighting setup. (His name is Childs, not Oscar, BTW)
@cameronschmitt6493 жыл бұрын
@@the_once-and-future_king. i guess you could argue that since macready was smart enuf to figure out how to reveal the alien earlier, and not smart enuf at the end to kill childs at the end (regardless of whether he's human or not), then macready isn't the same guy he was before.
@the_once-and-future_king.3 жыл бұрын
@@cameronschmitt649 I imagine being in shock, exhausted & in all probability freezing to death would have something to do with that too. But here's the thing: alcohol kills cells. That's why it's used to sterilise surfaces etc. If Childs _was_ a creature, it would have reacted when he drank the scotch Mac gave him, like with the hot wire earlier.

"Hi doggy" *snort* HAHAHA. Yes. "I dig how the prequel sets this up." Not me. The mystery, just like in Alien, is far better than the answers we're given. The imagination of the audience is something that should be stroked. It is a gift that too many in modern Hollywood deprive us of all the time. We seldom get a good mystery-as-backstory. We often just get holes in the plot that are "mystery" which leave the whole thing as a confusing mess. The Norwegian camp and the implied chaos, is just a great foreboding shadow over the rest of the movie.

Well, if the prequel must exist, I'd rather it connect. But we were just fine before the prequel movie existed. Like in Solo. Did it matter where Han's gun came from?
