I really liked this movie. I thought that it was a lot of fun and very underrated.

I liked the movie a lot, even though their will never be a sequel because its a flop, but yea John Carter came out in 1912, I read the book back in high school and both movie and book are better then avatar.

I enjoyed this movie too, and it lead me to start reading the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (which was the name of John Carter's nephew in both storylines). Honestly, I was more interested in Tars Tarkas and the Tharks (the green aliens) than in Carter himself. One minor issue I have is that I wish that the story of Tars, his wife, and Sola (his daughter) was more fleshed out in the movie; it's a really tragic and yet triumphant one. I strongly recommend the books, not that the movie was bad.

I'm currently reading the first book. John Carter of Mars is an awesome series, the author heavily influenced George Lucas. Burroughs also created Tarzan of the Apes.

I knew of the book series but in the early 1980's maybe 1970's Marvel comics bought the rights to John Carter of Mars. And made an ongoing comic called John Carter Warlord of Mars. I'd imagine that because Disney bought Marvel last year they now own everything Marvel does. Thanks for the Review :)

To continue what I said in the previous message. There was one difference that bothered me and that was the difference in the character of Sola, the alien female that was "tied" to John Carter, that was supposed to take care of him. In the books she is allot stronger in character. She isnt such a pushover that she is in the movies. She does have a soft side, especially towards John Carter. But she does have a tough side. That was the only thing that bothered me.

I saw it and I'm a big fan of the novels. There are some differences, but all of them work somehow even better than in the novel. For example, in the novels, his transportation to Mars has always been a mystery. While here, you get to see how he gets there. And it works. Some other stuff like in the film Tars Tarkas is Jeddak, while in the novel, Tal Hajus is. All in all, I really liked the film, great characters, some amazing scenes (learning-to-walk sequence) and hope we get to see a sequel.

Nice review! Just got home from the movies. Really enjoyed the movie. I agreed with basically everything you said. Great first part, okish middle and a good ending. Im reading the trilogy right now, this movie is based on the first book. Havent finished the first book yet but from what Ive read so far there is allot of differences. To many to type them down here. But I can see why they did it. To little time to introduce all the different characters that do everything. So they had a few do more.

spoiler alert; the sequel to this movie has john carter going back to mars, he ends up in the forests of the 'underworld' meets the white and black martian races and his son, and then a huge airship battle. all of this as a backdrop to rescuing the incomparable dejah thoris (again)... and a heart wrenching cliffhanger (the first cliffhanger ever?) it will be an awesome movie.

@theFLICKpick I didnt mind Taylor, he was actually good. But your right about the action scenes. The first one on Mars was good, when he is jumping from ship to ship and fighting the soldiers. The end battle is pretty good as well, all though the should have shown more of the fighting between the masses of soldiers. But nothing really got the heart pumping as you said. The white ape scene didnt do anything for me, a little disappointed with that scene.

this book was written a long long time ago. way before Avatar. If anything it is similar to "A Moment in Time" beautiful piece acted by young Christopher Reeves and young hottie Jane Seymour. No Mars premise but still a man outta his element.

Good review, I'll rent this. The subtitles are cute and clever. I won't watch another 3D movie and I doubt I'll see another movie in Imax, maybe I'll see Dark Knight Rises in Imax because I think it will be worth the money and I couldn't see Dark Knight in Imax because I lived in a different town. Mission Impossible 4 is the only 2D Imax movie I seen so far.

if anything avatar ripped off of John Carter not the other way around. Burroughs wrote John Carter of Mars roughly 100 years before Cameron came out with Avatar. People need to educate themselves with the facts before making baseless accusations. Good review by the way.
