"Det humoristiske soundtrack til min ungdom". Sådan beskriver komiker Jan Gintberg den britiske komediegruppe Monty Python. Nu har Jan Gintberg fået muligheden for at møde en af mændene bag Monty Python, John Cleese, til en snak om kreativitet, inspirationskilder, religiøs satire og grødomslag.

The brilliantly clever jokes, and the film's wonderfully mocking attack on unthinkingly accepting a view you're told to accept, are as relevant in 2020 as they ever were. However, it's only recently that I've noticed the amazing 'final twist' in the film, which I reckon has been pretty much unremarked on for all these years, and it's this - Brian himself isn't mocked at all, terrible things happen to him, but Brian is portrayed all through the film as kind, thoughtful, against injustice, open minded, gentle, and respectful of others. Remind you of anyone ?

Yes the fictional myth of Jesus. The same Jesus if you read all his alleged sayings isn't all about turning the other cheek etc. Most of the Jesus myth when it comes to the traits you mention is almost verbatim stolen from Buddha and Buddhism. An ideology that does not make any divine claims by Buddha himself, that's been added later. Oh and btw it outdates Christianity by 500 years. No historical evidence exists supporting the life and teachings of Jesus outside the bible, a work of fiction from start to finish!

No matter what a person says or does, someone somewhere is going to get offended. If things were not said and done in order not to offend then no one would say or do anything at all. Yes thats right. I'm really tierd of reading those extreme liberal bs that you have to tolerate everything. If you are inteligent human being you know after 2 sentences if someone is telling the truth and if the content of their talk contributes to the wellbeing of everyone. If you think that he is not right here in everything that he says than you are a dumb individual and fuck your tolerance, tolerance - like everything in the world is to be earned. Earn by logic, solid argumentation, seriousness in tone and a body language that tells you everything even without hearing anything. You ppl realy too much on words, yet you are eye based creatures - look at them!
@Rayblondie
@Rayblondie 6 жыл бұрын
You don't even know me Marcin and yet you judge me on a few words. No we shouldn't tolerate everything as some things are not right. But we should allow others to judge what they think is right for themselves and not accuse them of having a deteriorated mind because they don't see things exactly as we see them. That's how governments become totalitarian.
@ptkk21
@ptkk21 6 жыл бұрын
I always sound like an asshole when I try to care and show the remains of my ideological thinking. I dont demand that ppl should see things as I see them, I just think that it would be great if ppl saw things as they are. Why everybody always has to add some kind of magic story to reality? Do you really have to possess some kind of a supernatural strenght of mind to see thing as they are and deal with them in that matter? Its really weak and childish to see everything thru a kaleidoscope all the time. I got only contempt for ppl who lack inteligent and logical thinking - the only think that got us where we are.

@Rayblondie 6 жыл бұрын
You are beginning to sound human now with a shade of humility. I don't think John is saying anything wrong and looking through it again I kind of agree with him. I did react a bit against your original comment though. It reminded me of the comments about Chris Hitchens and Stephen Fry where anyone who disagreed with them were bigots. I think John is at least trying to be open to truth whereas Hitchens was simply anti God. Fry only against wrong religious practices. I don't think anyone has a monopoly on truth apart from Christ. I think if you attack people who disagree you tend to alienate them.

Something struck me when he talked about the supposed right to not be offended. The bishops in that 1979 debate certainly were taking a lot of offense to the film, treating it rather rudely but stopped at calling for a boycott or the Pythons to be "canceled." These days it's the modern woke left who have filled that role, so Cleese is fighting the same battle then as now, just that the players have changed. Think about the negative parts of organized religion: You WILL believe whatever we say, to debate or mock it is blasphemy, etc. Does that sound familiar? It's the same way climate alarmists and the COVID vax mandate people speak today - climate change and COVID have become a sort of religion that you are not allowed to mock.

Life of Brian is funny because it is recognizable. I don't know, but I'm guessing it's not very popular in China or Arabian countries, because they wouldn't recognize it. If it had been writen as a joke on how all Christians are Nazis, I don't think it would've been very popular in the west either, because it wouldn't be reconizable. And that's the problem with much of the attemts at humor at the expense of Muslims, that all Muslims are Nazis, which has nothing to do with reality. So the reason a Muslim version of Life of Brian wouldn't be a good seller in the west, is that most people in the west simply know so little about Islam that they wouldn't get the jokes. There are jokes to be made about Islam. For instance, as a Norwegian, I know a bit about whales and having read the Qu'ran… If you didn't get that joke, it may be because you haven't read the Qu'ran or that you don't know enough about whales to understand why that scene is potentially hysterical.

as a christian i definitely agree with what he and the movie says about how a lot of people (if not most) follow religion. Theres a difference between blind faith and real faith. real faith can contain both a requirement to believe in something you cannot see as well as wisdom and logic. he is right, jesus would face palm at the burning of a "heretic". in fact he would very well be furious. If one was thinking for themselves how would they come up with the concept of a God , so no influence by any writings (e.g) the bible.... nothing ? if your thinking for yourself you are not taking some one else's concept something that was interpreted by some bronze aged scholars and calling it free thinking it's not , free choice maybe , and the rebellion against God that would be critical thinking : Critical Thinking as Defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, 1987 A statement by Michael Scriven & Richard Paul, presented at the 8th Annual International Conference on Critical Thinking and Education Reform, Summer 1987. Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.

As a former Christian who became a 12er Shia Muslim (which means the Saudis and Al-Qaeda hate me worse than Christians), I was not offended by Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Life of Brian because Jesus Christ was not attacked in those movies. It was unthinking people who were were being caricatured. Of course, I'm not a "Liberal" or a "Conservative". I'm a Libertarian. No compulsion in religion. It makes a heck of a lot more sense than in believing the biggest magic trick of all times...something to come out of nothing without there even being a magician....so I might agree with you that religious people are nuts, though not even close to as nuts as atheists, who has no argument for how they came to be..and yet know they are....as if they puff came into existence together with the universe from one big random nothing which by chance created both morality, love, DNA, consciousness and countless of different species on one relatively small planet. I mean that is insane. Thank goodness John Cleese is smarter than that 😆🤣😂

Something to come out of nothing without there even being a magician... You mean like God came out of nothing, with no creator to puff it into existence ? Yeah, people that believe that are indeed complete fucking idiots, aren't they, but it's a good thing they don't try and grossly misrepresent their opponents viewpoints by getting everything wrong about it, and the scientific theories they tend to quote as explanations of how they came to be. If they did, boy would they be unreasonably lost.

That's a lot of fancy words used for a big load of shit. I have not yet experienced "the divine", and i still live a very fulfilling and happy life. I've tried experiencing "the divine" (because hey, if i'll call myself an atheist i first need to see if the oposition claim is entirely bullshit or just mainly bullshit), but he never seems to answers. Oh well. Though, the fact that your existence was so miserable that you needed some kind of delusional cult to make it slightly bearable is in itself incredibly sad and pitiful. I mean what kind of existence where you living that would make you say that death would be preferable ? Damn. But, fortunately, not everyone adhere that horribly depressing viewpoint on life. Only religious people who have been sold that idea, actually, the others go on quite well with their lifes, asking for more tangible things like food on the table and human rights rather than some vague feeling sold by snake oil sellers as an ultimate experience. Oh, and ftr the divine supposedly dwell absolutely everywhere, be it in the sky, within, in the heavens, etc etc. There's millions of little cults each with their own version of "the divine", so don't be a twat trying to impose your own do not steal original character version of god to those.

its kind of heartbreaking to hear a john cleese (very accurately) state that its not clear what the rules are anymore, and that this leads to some kind of internal censorship (or in his case, some conceptual approach that would remove the material from this kind of scrutiny, like going 200 years back in history). maybe its just me, but it really seems as if weve been a lot closer to a state where nothing is sacred and you can make jokes about anything in the past. for example, nothing monty python has ever done strikes me as being written with an attitude of internal censorship, quite the opposite actually. it seems like we have lost that to some extent. and as right as he is about this, its sad to hear cleese, a giant of the no-false-respect-for-anything type of comedy, talk so openly about it. homework for humanity.

John Cleese! he's humor never gets old... but (as a swede :-) the Danish interviewer thought vietnamese and koreans where neighbours and could not take a joke between them??? it's almost as calling Swedes and Spanish neighbours and could not take a joke between us because we have countries starting with an S and a E...

I thought it was less to do with the physical neighbor relationship but more to do with the fact that historically neighboring countries are constantly at war with each other, Korea was pretty involved with Vietnam war alongside the US, so I wouldn't be surprise if there are some stereotypes and impression formed by the Vietnamese of the time of Koreans, that said, it is a bizarre example to give, perhaps he'd known someone from one of those countries and heard an anecdote or something.

Such jokes that use rape or domestic violence as a premise should never be seen to condone such a thing. If indeed such a joke condoned these rather than denouncing them, itms a pretty poor excuse for a joke. Most jokes about such areas do indeed denounce these things, and an jokes that do condone them are horrid.

Tony Conrad As with the other thread, I have to assume you're very young and poorly educated, based on the blinders you proudly wear. Are you aware that the ancient Romans kept slaves? Even before them, slavery was a common practice in the Bronze/ Iron Age world? Are you aware that the Province of Judea (where jesus was born and where he died) was a Roman province? Are you aware that slavery was completely legal during jesus life? Are you aware that slaves were commonly raped by their owners? Are you aware that jesus did not lift a finger to help these slaves in any way? Are you aware that both the Old Testament and the New Testament both endorse slavery? Are you aware that in Luke 12:47, jesus tells people to beat non-obedient slaves? Are you aware that in Matthew 24:51, jesus tells people to kill non-obedient slaves? I don't know if this had drawn a clear picture for you. But just in case it hasn't, I'll spell it out: Your god apparently feels strongly against killing (thou shalt not kill). He/ She also apparently feels strongly against stealing (thou shalt not steal). He also didn't seem to think people should go around coveting their neighbours oxen. But when it comes to slavery, when it comes to raping your slaves or beating your slaves or killing your slaves, both your god and this jesus that you're so fond of, have clearly stated that they think it's absolutely fine to continue doing this. And it gets worse: If a woman wasn't a slave, well she was still _property_ and not a person, so if a young unmarried woman was raped, the bible commands you to sell her to her rapist, whereupon they will marry, and she will have to spend her life married to a man who raped her. Christianity isn''t just vile and ignorant, it's fucking evil!! So, if you've ever met a person who identified as a christian and was against rape, then they're not being a good christian and they are not following the bible. But hey, if *you* think slavery is wrong and you think that rape is horrifically wrong then you're a better person than this god you believe in, you're a better person than jesus and you're morally superior to them too!
