John William Coltrane - also known as "Trane" - was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions during his career and appeared as a sideman on many albums by other musicians - including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk.

Ok so this album is called A Blowing Session. It is lead by Johnny Griffin so, Johnny is taking the first solo. Both Coltrane and Hank Mobley are on this track. So is Lee Morgan -trumpet, Wynton Kelly - piano, Paul Chambers - bass, Art Blakey - drums. It sounds like at 3:15 Coltrane starts his solo. After Lee's solo is Hank Mobley. Btw best song on this album is The Way You Look Tonight.

PJ Coady Thanks very much for all the info. I would like to hear from MLB, the uploader (if he is reading this), why he doesn't give us this vital information when everyone who would enjoy this track would want to know all the musicians and the order they play.

Thanks to MLB for posting this. I am 77 y.o. and have played and heard a lot of music from that period. Griffin always was a master, and the same applies to the others. I had no trouble identifying them, in response to the person who complained that you should have identified all the soloists. These guys were my idols when I was young, and listening to this today, for the first time, brings tears to my eyes. It was a great time, clubs all over the place, live jazz whenever you wanted it: No Cover, No Minimum. I also gained quite a bit of technical insight hearing how they used signature rhythmic and concepts in this context. Thanks again.

It's a good idea to list the musicians since their music is been diseminated here with out pay to them or their hiers. Also some people are hearing this cut for the first time. I remember as a kid I went in to a sax lesson and had what I thought was Coltrane solo learned note for note. My teacher realized it was note listed clealy on the vinyl album jacket. In reality it was Hank Mobley. When I finally heard Coltrane it was Interstellar Space with Rashied Ali. Soon I would gett to hear pr and post Giant Steps etc..

We call this Griffin style " Ulja dulja doo". same riff all over the place... I think That is the reason he was kicked out of Monk band... Then COLTRANE is Brilliant..Definitely Mobley after Morgan.. Too loose embouchure for Coltrane, for one thing...

+Melvin Mathurin+The Alchemist League+Kevin doll You're right, Coltrane isn't on the melody, but he takes the second solo, starting around 3:16. :) I believe that's also him around 6:19 after the trumpet solo. The first one is epic and really fits his style! The second one, I might be wrong about because the style sounds less like him, BUT the tone sounds like his and I think that says a lot! :PCheck it out! I doubt you'll be disappointed! 😃

Bebop is the style that lost the big crowds and made billions of people look for different kinds of music. It may even be the reason we got pop.

That is the reason why I love Bebop. You can imagine yourself a taste different from the masses. Of course the flow of ideas is fast as lightning and not everybody can follow it. It's like learning a language.

Griffin is a solid tenor player but not a revolutionary. Coltrane brought a new direction in modern jazz. Again Hank Mobley is a nice player but not a disruptor. Interesting track. Solid trumpet playing too.
