Talk about Deja Vu, my father gave me a Silvertone Stereo portable record player and every night through my junior high and high school years I listened to Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, My Favorite Things, Jazz Samba, and a lot of Charlie Parker. Now that I'm 70 I realize what a wonder aesthetic education that was.

He is the most completest saxophonist to date, why he is not complacent with his skill set, even though it come off perfect to those listening. He take himself to class (practicing is renewing your ability) everyday. KZbin his seminars, you learn so much, and drop a few bad habits with your horn and end up replacing them enhancements that will make you a better player. Thank You Ernie

Thanks Bret, you came through again! I've been listening to music for over 50 years and it occurs to me that this stuff will all be eventually archival. When artists who play at this level of musicianship create, they are flying with out a net... standing there naked, channeling directly from the creative source... one can not possibly speak or be anything other than the heartfelt soulful truth. You know these are, were, good human beings with great intentions. You can't play what you ain't.

I had the pleasure of working with bassist Chip Jackson whenever I was in NY with the great Keely Smith. Great cat, and a wonderful player. Nice to hear him again. Chip, always a pleasure. Dennis Michaels

A most dedicated and expressive horn man for sure! Unfettered by technique, his solos are a musical joy. He’s done it all from Frank Zappa’s Grand Wazoo to Buddy Rich’s Big Swing Face albums. Thanks for sharing!

Still the most beautiful rendition of this gorgeous tube I've heard to date!! When a player tops out his own claimed inspirations, he has done his part. Ernie Watts shall remain an inspiration to us all.

I got to play with Ernie back in the late 90's in Phoenix trading 4's on sax on a big band tune he wrote over Cherokee changes I think. A very nice guy. One of my most memorable playing experience!

Another player that I missed, Bret. My mentor was pianist Jessica Williams; I study the keyboard under her influence, so I'm pulling your coat right now about her. She passed about two years ago and she was an impossible telephone conversation for me at all times because she never stopped talking. Now I will address myself to Ernie Watts. Listen, man, I owe you big time for the work you do. I want you to know that. I wish we could sit in some room somewhere and talk for hours.

Today I heard on the radio an amazing alto player, truly oustanding, when I checked on I found it was Ernie Watts....It is very satisfying to find you like something because you hear by yourself rather than like it because it was recommended or because you read it's praises!!...In case you care what I heard was "The Good Life" played by Charlie Haden's Quartet West.

I saw Ernie 2 or 3 years ago at the Pitt Jazz Seminar Concert @ the Univ of Pgh. Up until then, he was just a name I had heard, but I couldn't connect him with a sound. During the concert he blew me away...literally! And up until reading the post associated with this video, I had no idea of his varied and diverse background.

Saw Ernie for the first time last summer at the Telluride Jazz Fest. His set was an advanced study in the understanding of rhythm and melody. Of patience and propulsion. A sartorial tutorial on Staying in the Pocket. A performance of musicians well practiced in the path of listening Their humble glee to again follow the flow of a sound. To dig, To try again and catch a glimpse of something beautiful, See it as it arrives, abides and then dissolves forever. Existing only briefly for our brief live''s enjoyment. A wink and a nod to the gift of Groove, . And up there beneath the band shell he stood with his instrument. An artist creating his art, A sax man blowing. Totally at home in the manifestation of his own personal expression. Ernie Watts was and IS the Man, guiding and encouraging both his band and all l who stood and listened and watched in awe..

Ernie Watts is a total cat at everything he does. I am always impressed by his playing. I didn't know what his voice sounded like until now, but he definitely sounds like an Ernie. Sounds like he could be a character on the Simpsons. But, nonetheless, total CAT.

It's the "Mystery Horn"! ;) When he says "learn all the scales for all of the chords" that's straight out of the Trane School of Saxophone. That was Coltrane's big breakthrough...he'd solo off of the chord changes, not the melody, like the Bird. It's a "no wrong notes" kinda thing, meaning you can play all of'm, and they'll never be wrong....if..IF...you don't stay on one note too long - lol. Here's Ernie as the "Mystery Horn", playing a C Melody saxophone solo: . kzbin.info/www/bejne/mabCnH1qn6p9b6M
