This is the absolute best version of this song. It starts off running and continues to make your heart thump. Roy Haynes holds his own and Jimmy Garrison is also awesome. McCoy Tyner, what else can you say, he is the man!

This is the first jazz album I bought around age 14; it was $1 in the “cutout” bin at a mall. I had no idea who it was, but from beat one I was down for life. As a fledgling drummer I tried to follow what Roy was doing… not easy if you’re not familiar with the vocabulary. I still listen to it, as it’s a masterpiece. It has a profound depth and sadness IMO, even though it’s about positive things. When Trane enters after McCoy’s solo the feeling is just incredible.

Finally ! At last , after years , I have found it . The most marvelous sample of M F T where Coltrane robs this aperture to the piano of Mac Coy , and preaches it to the face of the world of mortals . Around summer of 1974 , after listening to Bobby Few in the American center ( Bd Raspail) , I used to spend the night at the Rosebud untill the first sun Rays entered the street behind . The Rosebud , a Jazz café , Rue Delambre ,near Montparnasse, whose barman had an honorable Bourbon with a de luxe smell of wax , and was my good friend . All the night at this era , this Coltrane record was playing it non stop during the whole night . No one never dare complain ! Thanks , many many thanks for this souvenir . My liver ... and the Girl that was my only reason for a long life , both they took holydays then ,and I was not welcome to join them . So I staid with John for a while ..

+jackkrm Mine too jack, even though it's Roy Haynes rather than Elvin. Something about his skittering snare drum brings a new dimension, and both Trane and McCoy are inspired while Jimmy holds it together at the bottom with his huge sound.

Yes, arguably the best version. Roy Haynes' drumming is immaculate here. Not the polyrhythmic powerhouse that was Elvin Jones but somehow lighter and yet no less forceful....

I remember it was 2001, worked in a record store. I was trying to get into jazz because I liked blues, and when they interpreted bluesy standards that had some existential yearning and sadness to them, and then I opened this one to check out a live version of MFT. Fucking brain meltdown. Coltrane was so far ahead of me it was flabbergasting. I just kept playing it over and over again. I played it for other people in disbelief: "do you hear what he's doing? I can't even believe this exists?" but nobody else really got it. "Hey Donnie, I think I found the meaning of life, here!"
@maxmerry8470

Yeah I don't even try to get people into Coltrane anymore, and the sad numbers on some of these KZbin tracks and Google Trends confirm it, but it's fun to talk to somebody else who might get it. This used to be the meaning of life to me.

I love Trane's modal work in this one, just hate the drum mix with the snare so loud. Really takes from what Elvin adds to the sound. Can't hear his toms at all, bass is thumpy and cymbals have very little life. Oh well, guess I was born 20 years too late to be there.
