Theme For Ernie was the song that made me fall in love with jazz, so this album has a special place in my heart. This was a great review of this too often overlooked record.

Hey Allan, another great review on an often overlooked record! I think the background behind this album is almost more interesting than the music itself, which is obviously stellar in its own right. Glad to see it here!

Soultrane has always been my favourite "pre-Classic Quartet/Impulse" Coltrane LP. ('Always look forward to your twice-weekly episodes, Alan.)

Cheers Maurizio - I agree, it's a high point in his early catalogue.

You’ve mentioned it before and I am in complete agreement when JC has restrictions his genius shines through so beautifully. The fire contained in the fireplace that doesn’t burn down the whole house…

Thanks Allan for another great review. Really enjoying your breadth of stylistic choices. But for this particular review I'd agree that angry doesn't really begin to convey the rage any black man would be feeling in 1958 in the US. That's a whole other story that others cover so well here on KZbin. Keep up the great work Allan can't wait to see what else pops up. I mean Joy Division, Gang of Four, B52's, Coltrane, Davis, Giuffre..... is there a review of the Clash's Know your Rights in the offing or maybe it's in the archives?

It may be time to do another Clash review. But then I haven’t done any of the Jam yet… have to see what mood I’m in!

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews The Jam, now that has made me nostalgic. I cam remember John Peel playing the new single from the new Jam Lp Setting Sons: "and here's Eton Rifles" in that slightly droll voice of his.

With respect to OJCs, my rule of thumb is that if the issue is from the first series of OJCs (no bar code on the back cover) it will likely sound very good (all analogue), especially the mono pressings, and if it’s a later pressing (with bar code) it’s likely to be an early digital master and it will likely sound compressed and flat.

Thanks, good to know! I need to explore what I’ve got and test that theory.

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews SOULTRANE : i'd rather seek an early (pre-OJC) reissue, like the 1972 version : It may say stereo on the cover, but this album is pure, glorious MONO, with sound that is full-bodied, relaxed, Tubey Magical and tonally correct . Here is the palpable jazz energy, the life of the music, that’s sure to be missing from whatever dead-as-a-doornail Heavy Vinyl pressing is being stamped out these days. Speaking about OJC , here a Steve Hoffman comment :: MOST (not all, but maybe 90%) of the OJC LP's were cut from the original analog master tapes. How do I know this? Because the OJC (along with the original) LP mastering notes are in the master tape boxes! Now, this does not mean that they were mastered the way I would do it, but many of them sound wonderful, and they are cheap. " Go for it! (now prices are not cheap , but still OK) Ps: keep in mind : about OJC 270 or 280 was when the mastering changed. Last, but not least : many OJC records have GH in deadwax/runout; it is not George Horn, BUT : The "GH" that may appear in the deadwax of Fantasy OJC's up to 1986 is me, Gary Hobish. (I did most of the OJCs until then, at which point I left George Horn's Fantasy mastering staff and was replaced by Phil DeLancie). At that time, deadwax inscriptions by the M.E. at Fantasy were not commonly done. Additionally, to the best of my recollection to that time all OJC titles were cut from the original analog masters. (In addition to mastering, I was also the librarian of Fantasy's vault). from SteveHoffman , New info on old OJC deadwax thread (2020)
