As a relative noob to all things jazz I'm really enjoying your videos. So far my Coltrane collection consists of Giant Steps, Blue Train, My Favourite Things, Sounds, and Ellington/Coltrane. Looking forward to checking out some of your recommendations in this video.

Noby74, thanks a lot! I need to do a couple more shortly. May I suggest you delve deeper into Trane's Prestige and Impulse catalog, such as Avant Garde with Don Cherry, and Crescent, or Ballads. Cheerse

Ken. About the significance of Giant Steps aka 'The Most Feared Song in Jazz'. The chordal progression is known as the 'Coltrane Changes' and includes the circle of fifths. A search for 'the most feared song in jazz' explains it. Brill!

My favorite Coltrane is Crescent. I have an original in great condition and it sounds excellent. Just a beautiful record. I listened to Love Supreme today. I don't dig it out very often and I have to say It isn't as good as Crescent to my ears.

Bumpdunlop have you found that many Trane Impulse LPs when found in the wild are often beat? Hard to find a clean Trane Impulse record. Folks played those sides!!
@bumpdunlop6 жыл бұрын
Ken, I only have a handful of Coltrane LPs. All of them I found in a local store. The main reason I bought them was that they were in mint minus condition and not priced too high, about $25. I have the original Crescent, which is one of my favorite Jazz albums. What else? A couple Prestige, Clotrane 7105 & Setting the Pace. My Favorite Things, a Jap Love Supreme, and a Music Matters Blue Train. I think that's about it. I'm looking for a real clean Love Supreme original. As I like Crescent so much, do you have any others to recommend to me?

I started really enjoying jazz when I began listening to Blue Notes from the early 60's. I've branched out to different labels over the years, mostly titles on the "major" labels. Prestige, Columbia, some smaller labels and a little Impulse. Today I've pulled up an Impulse discography and I'm going down the list, starting with JJ and Kai, the Ray Charles (which I have on LP) and now I'm checking out Gil Evans Out of the Cool. I'm gonna work my way through whatever looks interesting on the discography. Only a few hundred more to go. The Gil Evans is really good! I'm lookin forward to the Absolute Truth, I'll be there soon. Thanks for the video, this is gonna cost me.

Somehow i missed this video of coltrane. Great review. The first issue of giant steps was actually the old black label with silver lettering and sound wise a little better than the second issue...i remember i bought it when i was fourteen. It blew my mind!
@jimkaufman50516 жыл бұрын
Great video as always. My Favorite Things is by far my favorite Atlantic Coltrane. Giant Steps is groundbreaking, but what he did with that classic showtune blew my mind. And on soprano sax, which, as a sax player myself, I normally can’t stand. He makes it sound gorgeous. I also love his first village vanguard release. The groove that locks in with “Spiritual”, proves that he can take his approach to tonality to within the live setting and make it flow so nicely with his group. Reggie Workman is often forgotten in the realm of jazz bassists, behind Chambers and Carter, but no less as impressive as the groove setter.

Hi Ken - I read that John Coltrane died in Huntington NY and was buried in Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale. Since we pay so much homage to the man for his musical genius and all that he recorded - might be fun to see record stores in Farmingdale, since they’ve got the man eternally resting in their own backyard so to speak. Quirky? Absolutely. But sometimes quirky makes for good video. Just sayin.' I’m a long time subscriber to your KZbin channel. One of the best. Thank you for all you do to entertain and inform. Jim

The 10 Coltrane albums I get back to most often -- that is very often (recording year): Lush Life 1958 Giant Steps 1959 My Favorite Things 1960 Ole 1961 (equally for Eric Dolphy) Ballads 1962 Coltrane 1962 Crescent 1964 A Love Supreme 1965 Sun Ship 1964 Interstellar Space 1967 (equally for Rashied Ali)
@cedricfeschotte8356 жыл бұрын
It was really hard to pick just those 10 amidst a bounty of equally enjoyable and influential sessions... many of which were recorded within the same year! JC was so prolific yet so consistently good and continuously searching. There are very few musicians, or even artists that can compare. Miles is arguably the only to rival, but it's a whole different story indeed.

Giant steps runs thru 3 keys who would build an augmented triad if put together. He invented a way of harmonising that build first on the "Tadd Dameron turnaround" wich was very inventive, we musicians practice this for a lifetime:-)

Putting aside the recordings you mentioned these are a few of my favorite things, Standard Coltrane on Prestige Traneing In on Prestige Lush Life on Prestige Coltrane´s Sound on Atlantic Live at Birdland Impulse ! A Love Supreme (goes without saying) The John Coltrane Quartet Plays Kulu Se´ Mama Duke and Trane Impressions Transition Expression among many others I´ve listened to ``Both Directions at Once`` totally knocked me out. Wonderful recording. It fits in nicely with Live at Birdland and Crescent. I started listening to Trane as a 17 yr old circa 1969. Changed my life. Thanks Ken, I appreciate your love for Jazz.

Question. Why are the albums not in the jacket sleeve? Is there any particular reason for storing them that way. Thanks
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop64556 жыл бұрын
1-Over time, very old jackets from the 60s can actually shrink. I don't want to force a record into a jacket. 2-LP stored outside jacket enables quicker access and I don't get more fingerprints on the jacket. 3-once cleaned, I keep the LP in sleeve with the sleeve opening to the side-keeps it sealed from outside elements like dirt and dust.

I always thought his Atlantic period and one-off Blue Train record for Bluenote were the best. I do have box sets covering his Prestige and Atlantic years but dabble in his mid to early Impulse period. "Central Park West" was a standout as it's sort of a slow version of "Giant steps" in it's intro. One rarity I like is Live in 1962 bootleg with a 21 minute version of "Impressions". There's a video of this performance as well and it features a long solo from bassman Jimmy Garrison. I always loved "Tungi" and love the many different takes on the deluxe version of Coltrane (Impulse).

You dont dig the Prestige stuff?
@DorianPaige006 жыл бұрын
I got all his work with Prestige in the 3 separate box sets issued as Fearless Leader, Interplay, and Side steps. "Wheelin' and Dealin"' Lp and "Tenor Conclave"Lp were my favs. Prestige usually isn't as flashy as Bluenote but I find myself loving Prestige even more on repeated plays as they remained in a mid 50's mindset for longer which is really my era. I've pretty much acquired their full catalog or atleast what is of interest. I do get lost on some of Mal Waldron's Prestige titles much like I would mid 60's Bluenote or most Impulse.

The box set of the complete Village Vanguard recordings. I have the CD version. Don't know if it's available on vinyl. With the great Eric Dolphy. Spencer Dryden who was the drummer in the Jefferson Airplane didn't like this music. He said Coltrane was in an "animal freak bag" with Dolphy.

Ken, How many people in the U.S.A. ever think how many people in U.K. supported American Jazz, period 1950s / 1960s + U.S.A. recording engineers who captured this music sounds spot on. European audiences deserve some praise for loving/ keeping this great great music alive.

I spent the better part of two years in college listening to almost nothing but John Coltrane. 20 years later, I rarely listen to JC as if I wore out the experience which is impossible so I think I just need to go through his works again. Crescent and Coltrane's Sound were always my top two, however.

Dave Brubeck = "frat boy jazz" 😅
@craigbroadfoot18513 жыл бұрын
Jazz snobs will look down on Brubeck because he was popular, but to criticise the quartet for being ‘white’ is ridiculous when he was Jewish, the band were multi-racial and they absorbed lots of different ‘world music’ rhythms. The quartet were an amazing band who absolutely could ‘swing’ and were also accessible, which is what the snobs hate..
