John Constantine best moments

I hate that John's own show never really got the chance to truly take off because it was exactly what a show with Constantine should be, dark, gritty, violent as hell, and full of moral ambiguity. It's great that Matt Ryan got a second chance to portray the character in Legends because he is honestly the only one I can think of for the role, but dear god is it doing the character a gross misjustice.

In my opinion, DC Universe have too many series. It is saturated. Better apply MCU strategy: interchangable series between main characters. Each series could has its own theme: action / gritty / drama / comedy, etc. But it less bored for the fans.

I absolutely LOVE how Matt Ryan also acted out Constantine's spellcasting! It's a small thing but just him slapping his hands together and twist out the pentagrams while getting that "I gotta drop a deuce" face really made me love his interpretation of the character more then what Keanu did in the film (although I still LOVE Keanu)

Actually, that's how unicorns are supposed to act. They are not as friendly as they are made out to be...that's for fairytales. The actual unicorn killed what they previewed to be impure people. The Constantine show deserved a proper chance. It is a shame it was pretty much pitted against Super Natural and was given a bad slot on American TV. They pretty much got the perfect actor with great likeness to Constantine's comic counterpart. The tone was great we had John being an anti hero. Doing morally bad things for the greater good. Sacrificing friends, taking huge risks with his own life and being haunted by his past mistakes. I gave up on CW's shows years ago. But I hate to say that I'm not missing much from what they are doing with Constantine now. We could've had something great if it was given the chance.

Matt Ryan is a great actor. I loved both his live action and animated portrayals of John Constantine. And they were both well-written as well. But boy, I cannot get over his outfit. It never looked accurate. In my mind, Constantine's clothes are EXTREMELY lived in, a bit wrinkled, VERY relaxed, maybe a bit dirty, faded, or a bit stained. This version of him always looks like someone cosplaying John Constantine. Doing a great job of cosplaying him, if we were at a con, I'd give him applause. But the costume designer somehow took an outfit that is not supposed to look special and made it look fancy. And that bugs me.

The costuming is great and awful at the same time. He looks exactly like his comic counter part, but... wrong? That tie doesn't look like he did it at 9am but throughout a hard day he's let it go loose. It looks like someone precisely did the tie to look that way. His trench coat doesn't remind me of a hardened detective, it looks like something my exgirlfriend would wear to dinner. His hair doesn't conjure avid blond punk vibes, it makes him look like he's on a professional ice skating team.

From this collection you would think johns primary power is opening a portal and sucking people into hell. I guess it didn’t take off because that’s not his main power. The most interesting thing about John Constantine isn’t that he’s mad at the devil and sees things. He “rides the wave of fate.” You can’t kill him. He can’t lose. Like….really wvwr. As long as fate agrees the outcome is for the best John always somehow gets it. Superman can’t beat John. Superman’s weakness is magic and just no matter what he does he can’t seem to land a punch on John. Ever. The fact John is weary tired and bedraggled is because he’s supposed to have died a thousand times but didn’t. And the thrill has worn off. It’s just work now and that’s why he drinks. It’s a lot more interesting to understand the person John Constantine and his deeds than it is to just focus on oh kill demons cool! Riding the wave of fate is why John cannot LOSE. BUT that’s not why he cannot die. If fate felt the best outcome were his death he’d die. John made a deal with each of the four kings of hell in secret. As a result they’d help him but they all get his soul. So if John is damned to hell then when he arrives in hell the biggest war ever splits he’ll apart for his soul. And he knows it. So none of them will permit him to enter hell and god won’t let him into heaven. So can’t die. More interesting than scary Mexican grandma in a mirror.
