John Curry 1976 Europeans LP

The first, and most difficult victory of his incredible triple crown and the start of 50 golden days. John would probably not have won this championship had the Czech judge not gone against the Eastern bloc and voted for John. That judge didn't re-appear at international championships until the 1986 Junior Worlds in Sarajevo!! It's not quite as perfect as his Innsbruck performance but it is worth remembering that this was only the second time John had ever competed this LP. A brilliant skate that, ultimately, could not be denied and set him up for the Olympics and Worlds to come. The commentator is Gordie McKellen Jr.

Was the other announcer John Tesh? If so, too bad he couldn't keep his commentary down. At least Gordon wasn't as bad as Scott Hamilton years later who thought viewers would rather hear his shrieks rather than watch the program. John Curry WAS the best.

Is there any more satisfying jump to music than that performed at 3:15? It's more perfectly on the beat than the one at the Olympics and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time. Just a beautiful, beautiful routine.

I agree. A few moments were very slightly better timed than the Olympic performances, but only slightly. That routine still a masterpiece of artistry.

Well just to say that John was in my ballet classe in London and I was the one that give him to Alan B. and that was it .) lost my love of my Life he was so good in ballet but I went to the Royal Opera House and John went to the U.S.A I miss them Edward Arckless

Thank you floskate, I don't think I ever saw this before. It wasn't until the 1976 Olympics that I started to take notice of figure skating. What surprises me is the strength of the crowd support, considering this was the first time most would have seen the routine. Have you got the new Bill Jones book Alone - The Triumph and Tragedy of John Curry ? I got mine today!

Another gem. Thanks Floskate. Great performance from John - just a slight wobble after the Russian Splits and a well-disguised slightly uncontrolled landing on the double lutz. Any chance of finding John's 1976 Worlds LP?
