He was right. I agree with what he said about finishing the competition to show you are the true champion. He was the true champion in doing what he wanted to do against the society that didn't like a skater that they deemed different. He was one special talented, graceful and beautiful man.

World performance was Better than Olympic performance! Curry was a true Champion -British, European, Olympic and World. So missed.

Oh, I don't know. I still prefer John's Olympic long program skate. But hey, he is so brilliant that any glimpse of his skate becomes a revelation and a mystery into the true origin of a genius.

I met John many moons ago at a Night Club in Nottingham. What I remember was his shyness and how he stood alone. He certainly was a quieter young man. It' a nice memory of this man who was so sweet and genuine. Some of the UK Tabloid press were very unkind to him, even after his Olympic win which was cruel. A lovely person.

What a gifted man he was! I love him, and I am deeply sorry he is not among us anymore. John, Rudolf, Freddy, Ondrei, all killed by the same virus.

Of course, I see why John would want to win both the Olympics and Worlds, especially having come in 3rd in the previous Worlds and 2nd in the previous Europeans, but the Olympics is what matters most, by far. For someone who won the Olympics, skating really well in both the short and long programs, as John did, making a huge impact, the Worlds was just a footnote or a little icing on the cake. An example of the difference Olympic gold can make is when Scott Hamilton won the '84 Olympics, even though Brian Orser scored higher in the free skating, and skated better. So Scott won based on the included compulsory figures. Brian won a World championships. Except for people who follow skating closely, most of the world regarded Scott as the conquering hero, the little guy who could, and Brian Orser was just that Canadian, who would rise up again in the Battle of the Brians, and lose again. Then it's off to pasture for breeding purposes, or in Brian's case, becoming a coach and breeding the next generations of champions. Being an Olympic gold medalist, it gave Scott better pro opportunities, and the confidence to find his way as an entertainer and entrepreneur. Brian Orser did some pro skating, but ends up being a coach, and would have faded comparatively, except he became one of the world's best coaches. Had John Curry skipped the Worlds, he would have just had an earlier start on what he wanted to do, push the envelope in bringing ballet to ice, and have his own troop, both which he did. At the time John won the Olympics, I thought he was taking a big risk in going to Worlds. The reward would never be worth the risk. The reward of winning Worlds would be that no one would say it was a fluke that he won the Olympics, but I don't think anyone would have said that anyway. But the risk of even coming in 2nd, or especially crashing and burning to way down in the standings, could tarnish an Olympic gold medal. The risk is never knowing how you're going to feel on a particular day. Sarah Hughes won the 2002 Olympics and it was a shocker. She skated marvelously. Wisely, she didn't bother with the next Worlds. Good grief, I had no idea it was bloody EST that did the trick for John, to help his nerves. I thought it was some magic instilled by Fassi, especially improving his figures, which gave him the confidence to skate well, transcend his nerves, and land all his jumps. This was a really good series on John. I've probably seen it before, but I forgot about it because I'm that old. Having seen videos of John as a pro skater, I can say without reservation that had his father allowed him to study ballet, he would have been a top of the heap ballet dancer also, but probably not as famous as he was as a skater and Olympic gold medalist. One tiny little thing that was missing in this presentation, even though it was about John Curry, I think Canadian Toller Cranston also played a prominent role in the transformation of male skaters from robots/soldiers to what they became quickly after those two struck. But it was nice seeing the thread of how Curry inspired the magnificent Robin Cousins and Torvill & Dean. I remember watching the '76 Olympics on TV though, and it was taking place in the same ice arena where as a runaway from the Vienna Conservatory of Music, I took my first skating lesson. And I was wanting so badly for John Curry and Dorothy Hamill to skate well, and win, and they did! I wanted John to win for every artistic boy, like myself, who wanted to study ballet as a kid, but their parent(s) or circumstances wouldn't allow it, but who loved skating also.

May I be disagree with you , because you don’t estimate that ice dancing is a real Job and without partner , it’s a real beauty. John Curry has conctrated aids in 1986 then he was an ice dancer without partner but studients . This world of rink have to change and Hooe to Change this way to factual. I give respect .

John's jumps are not as high as, say, Robin Cousins' or Alena Kostornaia', but they remain awe inspiring nevertheless as they are being born of the music and not just executed to the music. He was a genius and is probably a better skater than even much beloved Yuzuru Hanyu, who comes second in my private treasure box of golden medals.
@scook55993 жыл бұрын
But you can see the connection or similarities in John Curry's and Yuzuru's skating style as you said John's jumps we're born if the music. Yuzu more focused on jumps than I like though.
