He was the first professional to hit his drives over 300 yards on average, his swing is one of a kind. During his backswing that club head comes back into his peripheral. John is the peoples player.

He averaged 300 yards from 99 to 08. Which is crazy! Plus, he was the only one averaging +300 yards till 2003

And first to averade 300+ in 1997..his swing might not be beautiful (playing with long clubs since childhood) but was effective. If he would keep up mentally he would take some of Tigers majors 100%. Even Tiger said he wished to have Johns talent. Its sad to see him 58yo, swollen legs, alcohol problem but he is for real-never putting on an act which is great.

John Daly has always been one of my favorite players on the PGA Tour. Not because of how many wins or how much money he's won, but because he stayed true to himself. He's just like the rest of us but way better at the game of Golf. Watched him play at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, MI years ago. While he was on the range warming up, he talked to the crowd, answered questions, smoked a cigarette and had a couple beers. Just another day at the office for John. The crowd following him was nearly as large as the one following Tiger that year.

That left foot does the exact same on every swing… Lifts up when taking the club away and then as he starts his downswing, the left heel slams to the floor as a trigger point. Copied it ages ago, works a treat.

I remember when he came on the scene, I was living on the second tee (no, really, just walk out the back door of the house and drop a ball and tee off) of our course and working with two guys who were golf freaks. We'd clock out for lunch (car salesmen, how cliché can you get 😊) and race down to the local par 3, practically run around the course and go clock hack in, then we'd play my home course on the weekends... I was literally playing 6-7 days a week. So, here comes JD, steaming around the course and it gave me motivation to change/improve my tee work. I'm 6'5"/230 and have a long, particularly slow backswing and equally smooth downswing and, for the most part, could drive a long way compared to the average Joe. After seeing Daly it motivated me to put some anger in my downswing and see what I could do... 300+ drives were pretty common when I was on a hole with the real-estate. Thanks, John... For the inspiration and demonstration of style! 😊

I was there the day he became famous at Crooked Stick. Me and my co-workers had never been to a pro tournament before. We were walking near a par 5 starting to cross the fairway at a yellow rope where fans had stomped a mud path in the middle of the fairway (due to all the recent rains) when the Marshalls pulled the rope up to stop the traffic. We saw a massive tee shot go past, then three shorter ones that didn't make it to the muddy trampled part of the fairway. We honestly figured the first shot must have been someone's second shot and they must have duffed it off the tee. All doubts were removed when John Daly hit his second shot on the fringe of the green. What a fun day.
