Please study your manual before attempting this. I understand there are several differences between same-year model tractors and yours may be a little different than mine Please select "show more" for further details.
This video documents my 50-hour service for my 2015 John Deere 1025R. The manual states the 50-hour service only requires the transmission fluid be changed, the transmission filter be changed, and the suction screen cleaned. However, after researching other publications and GreenTractorTalk.com, I decided to do what is in the video. I’m glad I did, too - the front axle fluid was very dirty.
The suction screen hose and the oil filter were the most difficult to remove.
I did not grease the SCV as I did this earlier.
If you have any questions, check out GreenTractorTalk.com or message me.
Thanks for watching.
GreenPartsStore.com provided the following:
$63.86 - 5 Gallon Pail of John Deere Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid (Used for the transmission and front axle)
$25.19 - LVA16054 Transmission Filter
$8.49 - M806418 Engine Oil Filter
Amsoil Provided the following:
$29.10 - 1 gallon 10W30 (Reference your manual for the weight you may want)
AutoZone provided the following:
$3.99 - Grease
$9.99 - Worthless oil filter remover

One of the finest 'how to' videos on KZbin. Making of this video added a lot of work to this 1025R service and I do appreciate your effort. Very helpful before beginning this same job myself, thank you. NOTE: When my tractor was delivered new from the JD dealership I had to drain excess transmission fluid, add engine oil, add coolant and correct tire pressure. No way am I going to trust some minimum wage millennials to work on my tractor.

I did the same thing with an oil filter before. Instead of tapping the screw driver with a hammer I used anger and a stabbing motion, worked like a charm. Great video! Thanks for posting. I have a 1023e that's coming up on 50.

Great video, I bought a 1023e which is basically the same model with a few less bells and whistles and it was the best purchase I've ever made for myself. I do a full service once a year instead of waiting, costs a bit but I like having fresh filters and fluids replaced every September before the snow hits here in upstate New York. I added the 3 point quick hitch on the back and it's really come in handy, so much easier to add or remove implements.

Great video! Very well put together! I was amazed by the amount of specs of steal on the magnet! Also the manual states 13 quarts so I put 3 gallons and a quart and its maybe 1/8" on the dip stick and none was spilled. I added another quart and it was just rite. Goes to show not to trust your manual 100% always check fluid levels.

Good job. If you put the oil filter on at recommended specs you shouldn't have a problem with it the next time. Seems the factory wants to make sure you have to work at it on your first removal, that or they just like making it to tight to remove. My problem is with removing the screen filter to the trans. Why I watched this, I wanted to know if there is a better way. I'll try your way of moving the hose up like you did... again. Didn't work for me when I tried it on mine. I'm close to 600 hours so it coming due. I've always just taken the hose off and it's a pain to take off and more so to put back on. To small to make it bend. So, thanks for the video. It was good and pretty much covers it.

I followed the manual placing the supports under the rear axle. Did not have room to place drain pan underneath transmission/hydraulic drain plug. Jacked up tractor and changed placement of jack stands to the frame forward of the axle as shown in this video. Drained tranny. However, jack stands now in the way of placing pan to catch drips changing tranny filter. Maybe try placing the right jack stand on frame, the left jack stand on rear axle. this should give room for drain pan for both draining fluid and placing pan to catch drips from filter change. I did not try this and this placement may not be a good secure balance of weight, try using caution ensuring tractor is well supported against movement fore/aft port/starboard :-). When filling the front axle I found it's helpful to use a funnel with a small spout to fit in hole AND leave room for air to vent from axle [even with vent plugs pulled by each front wheel]. With the tractor in neutral, I had to 'bar-over' the rear driveshaft to align the grease zerk with the small access hole in plate beneath U-joint. I used a large screwdriver lodged in the rear U-joint to turn the driveshaft achieving alignment. To lubricate the 3-point ball nearest the tractor the pins can be pulled with rear ties off. Transmission/hydraulic fluid: to save money I used Triax Agra Utto XL that claims to meet specs for John Deere Hydro and New Holland Ambro MAT 3525. The Triax is colored red like tranny fluid, not clear like JD Hydro or New Holland Ambro. The original oil filter from Yanmar Engines does not look like anything from John Deere [on the inside]. After seeing the original innards of the factory oil filter I looked past Fram, Purolator, Wix and Champion. I went to the JD dealership and bought their filter. Hmmmm, it looked just like the Fram, Champion, Purolator and Wix on the inside. I asked the JD parts guy about this, he said 'oh, that filter you took off is a Yanmar filter, this is the JD filter but it is just as good. SO ........... just about every aftermarket filter I seen looks just like the John Deere engine oil filter. Wait! The hydrostatic transmission filter is built for HIGH PRESSURE, I bought a JD tranny filter because there is not an aftermarket filter that will cross reference HIGH PRESSURE [that I could find].

yes , my Austin London taxi had 2 nipples that were dead shut, never had grease passed since the London taxi was made in 1970, ALL grease nipples should be checked as passing grease before installation, 2 minutes can save a lifetime on trouble and wear, be wise and check the nipple first

You did miss that and I missed it too. I ended up tackling that fitting later on. Filming that would have been pointless because I could not get a camera at a spot to view the process. Regardless, fitting the grease gun takes some finesse and patience. Thanks for watching and take care.

Also, My oil filler port is on top of the valve cover...right on top of the engine, not on the side as on yours. Does JD put different engines in the 1025r? Mine is a Yamaha 3 cyl diesel. but it has a JD plate on it (as well as a Yamaha plate)

I'm unaware of all the models of engines JD may use, but I am pretty confident that Yanmar is the exclusive engine for this year's model. Have you considered joining Green Tractor Talk - a forum for John Deere tractors? There is a lot of info on there.

1025Rs are the absolute roughest riding mowers made by man........they excel at tilling, FRL work, 48 inch bush hogging, and general small farm work but for mowing the lawn...........get a zero turn with a good suspended seat and seat platform.

pdoggy10inch It seems as though your yard needs a little maintenance. It rides just as nice as the 950's and 970's with suspension seats that I've spent hours on. We core aerate every fall with a little urea, and roll every spring, and we have just shy of 4 acres. We use our 1025R and X590 with no complaints.
