None of that stupid background music, just the beautiful sound of the two poppers. Them two G's in tandem demonstrates the main difference between the styled and unstyled was just that; styling. What a great video.

John Deere brought out their first diesel engine tractor, the R model, in the late 40s, not with the 1960 launch of the first generation tractors, which moved away from the 2 cylinder tractors to 4 and 6 cylinder tractors. The R was also a 2 cylinder tractor, but with a diesel engine.

My Dad had a John Deere 50 love the old tractor
@dalesmyth7398Ай бұрын
I cut my teeth on a 60 JD. My Dad got that tractor just for me when I was a kid. All because it had a hand clutch. I could not reach the foot clutch on the 420 we had, so we needed another tractor anyway, he got me the 60. From then on, all we had was JD with hand clutches. I've got a propane 60 out in the yard now. I had a clevis to break on me one time as a kid, and the rope that is pulled to lift the plows tore the seat off that 60. From then on, I hung that rope on baling wire, that wire just gripped that rope good enough to hold it, but break loose if I broke another clevis. Lucky I happened to be standing up when it broke.

With me it was a hand start distillate model D. Also a gas model A and a diesel model 70 pony starter.
@bio-techlarry960214 күн бұрын
I wouldn't tie that rope to your seat. If that plow comes lose and the rope doesn't break, your seat will be gone. My uncle had one of the small versions backing the '50s. That's some nice looking farmland yall are plowing. Wouldn't take much and your ready to plant.

@@i_eat_dirt2,,, oohhhhh, Please give us an example, or are you talking about the pony engine start ? even some of those two cylinder diesels do have electric starters,
@i_eat_dirt2Ай бұрын
@@theda850two no atleast some model As came with 2 tanks one for your running fuel diesel/kerosene then your starting tank that would be gasoline because its easier to start on cold
@KevinMaxwell-o3tАй бұрын
@@i_eat_dirt2 No, some were gas tractors, like my 1955 Model 70. Some were diesels, usually started with a gas pony engine. Some were TVO tractors: they started with gasoline, were then switched over to tractor vaporizing oil for the day, then switched back to gasoline prior to shutdown. TVO was a crude kerosene, not diesel.

Hope these operators wear hearing protection. My years of plowing with a 1954 JD-40 as a teenager without hearing protection has taken my hearing in old age. Good program, however.
@DavidHutson-pt5peАй бұрын
John Deere, DID NOT "switch over to diesel engines" in the 60's. They had a number of TWO CYLINDER DIESEL MODELS several years before they came out with the "New Generation" 4 and 6 cylinder engine tractors, with both gasoline and diesel models.
@tractorchasersАй бұрын
You are correct. What I meant was more that they switched away from the 2cyl to the modern diesel engine designs that we know today and that diesel became the predominant fuel for the future of farm equipment. Didn't realize how it sounded until I watched it back.

I grew up on two cylinder John Deere tractors and I would like to hear them sound the way i remember them. Why is everyone putting straight pipes on them? That's not how they were in their day. When you spent long days on them you appreciated the muffler. As a matter of fact when the 30 series came out with the oval muffler, many farmers spent a little more when it was time to replace the muffler on their 20 series tractors and used 30 series oval mufflers instead.
