Awesome video! The 210 did a lot better than at "Ruff and tumble". The 129 did good as well. I wouldn't mind seeing how the 318 would do as well. At our local plow day in October there having pulls. Some maybe I will give it a try.

Thanks man! I can tell you from experience with a couple of 318's here at our pulls, they will pull decent with ag tires and tons of weight. You've got ags and weights so that should really help you. Is that the plow day in Renfrew? I'd like to make it out there someday.

Yeah its at Marburger's dairy. Which is in the same area. If you could make it that would be awesome. It's just long drive. lol Unless your at school then it wouldn't be as bad.

I would like to get out there, I think it would be nice to attend a fall plow day. I'm actually commuting to a PSU campus close to home this year but next year I will be back at main campus again so hopefully I'll be able to make it out there.

I'm surprised the whole "Cub vs. Deere" argument hasn't found its way into this comment section. I personally have had at least 2 CC 129s, a dozen or so I.H. built Cubs, and only two Deere's (214 & 314.) If I were to build a "stock" puller, I'd go with the Deere 214 as it has the variator for more control of wheel speed. Once you get into "modified" I'd probably go with a Manual Cub wide frame tractor with a clutch upgrade. Both companies made some good machines and some turds. For normal yard/garden work belt drive has some advantages (gasp from the crowd!) When a belt wears out, you replace it, no problem. When things wear out on a shaft drive tractor that's 40-50yrs old it tends to cause bad vibrations that can take out other components like hydro input shafts, motor mounts, oil pans, etc.

I agree with you 100% on all your points. There isn't really any competition/modified garden tractor pulling in New Jersey where I'm from...everyone just runs stock. Surprisingly, the majority of the pullers at our events run belt-drive tractors such as the JD 200 series (myself included). And they do pull very well. If you know how to set up the dual drive belt/variator correctly, and you don't slip or smoke the belts, they will last a very long time. I've always appreciated having the variator...that's one advantage that Deere gear drives have over the Cubs (you can run a Cub with a creeper, but the creepers don't last long in a pulling tractor). I've pulled with a few hydro's including my Cub 129 here and a JD 322, but they can't put as much torque on the ground as a gear drive. I actually ended up replacing the driveshaft in my 129 about a week or two after this video was made. Shaft-driven tractors are great to have, but are much more costly to repair down the road (as you mentioned). If I built a dedicated pulling tractor, though, it would probably be a gear-drive Cub just because they are simplest (and probably toughest overall).

MichaelTJD60 10 4 I like Hydros for everything BUT pulling.

jhitt79 Pulling and doing garden work such as plowing or tilling...although the hydro's are nice during plow days, when you're constantly starting and stopping.

Do you think you'll ever buy a 316 again or look for a 318?
@MichaelTJD607 жыл бұрын
For sure. My uncle said he would pass his 318 on to me once he retires it. They are my favorite garden tractor and that one has sentimental value to me so I've gotta have one. It's just not in the works right now unfortunately. I might try and find a cheap JD 300 or 314 or something to hold me off for a while.

MichaelTJD60 Sounds like a good idea. I'm still looking for one as well

They are plentiful. If you want to go the cheaper route, I would look for a 300/314/316 Kohler like I mentioned above, or if you want Onan power like a 318, look for the later style 316 like I used to have. They have the same power train as a 318 minus power steering and a couple other small things.

I would like to see a new tractor pull that much, do it multiple times, & still run & drive like new.

Don't be fooled, these old ones don't always come out unscathed either...especially from a tractor pull. The year before this, the detent springs in the trans let go and it got stuck in gear halfway down the track...had to limp it home and get the trans rebuilt that winter. Competition pulling does put a lot of strain on these things.
