A detailed video of how to remove the piston from a main boom hydraulic cylinder, replace the seals, reinstall the piston, then test the cylinder. I ended up taking the piston and shaft out twice due to a mistake, the second installation, towards the end of the video, has better video than the first. I made this video partly as a reminder in the likelihood that I have to do it again.

I have a 3228D and I went all the way to the "taping the Rod Guide in" in order to put the "tool ring (orange color ring)" inside cylinder to clear the passage for the internal snap ring passing out. The Rod Guide moves easily to about half inch inside the cylinder (at the point which still does not clear the "tool ring channel") and suddenly "tapping" becomes really solid. Like it hits something inside and it does not move at all. I don't want to tap harder because it is like hitting a solid piece of still that does not move anywhere. Tips?

Hmm. Not sure I am quite understanding and it has been a while, but from what I recall when it seemed like I was hitting against something solid it was when the spring was not clearing the barrel walls. It sounds like you are past this point?

@@dalewcox there was some sort of hard paint around the guide and I kept banging on it with my punch then finally moved in and cleared the "channel" I am now waiting to receive the seals by UPS. Last question. Looks like it is really hard to pull the piston rod out after installing the "tool" in the cylinder. I noticed that your come along was not able to do it and you end up running the hydraulic to pop the piston rod out? Could tell me how you did that?

Just a note on loctite. Use loctite primer spray before applying the loctite. The oils can interfere with its adhesion. It also will set it up way faster for a sooner full strength without contamination.

Or at least spray with break cleaner and let dry good will help also

Is this skid steer reliable and how much should I buy one fore
@dalewcox
@dalewcox 3 жыл бұрын
This is the only skid steer I have owned, I bought it used from a rental place, so it was fairly severely used, and I have had my fair share of repairs, mostly from it having been deep in mud at some point and associated corrosion from not having been cleaned out. Bottom line is I have in total about $35,000 into it at this point, and it shouldn't need anything but regular maintenance for some time to come, at least that is my hope. I am told if I wanted to sell it I should be able to get more than what I have into it. I love the machine, it can do a lot.

You spilled a little oil. Not sure if you were aware. Great video! About to tackle the same repair myself.

I'm sure that was a sarcasm. I spilled a bunch of oil, unfortunately. Good luck on your repair! Mine is still holding just fine.

So you’re saying 400.00 for the dealer to do this is a good price considering the seal kit is 180.00 lol

Yeah...today I am a bit short on cash AND time. Back when I did this I was shorter on time. Sometimes I am finding that I need to let people earn a living and focus more on what I am doing to earn mine. I don't earn a living doing this. Having said that, I enjoy the process and like to learn.

I know this is a year or more ago. Look up the manufacturer for the thread locker used to see which number of their product is needed. Not to mention most of them require a heat soak to remove. I say that as a small amount is what's needed. Just wet the thread lightly, enough to engage but not so much it has to drip off. Mainly for the next time you might need to disassemble..

Thank you for the tip. I have not had to disassemble anything yet on which I have applied Loctite, so hopefully when I need to I can! The blue is supposed to be released with significant force, whereas the red needs heat and force. I will say that I applied the red to a nut on a piece of equipment that was constantly vibrating loose, and on which I never saw the need to remove. That nut has not moved since!

@@dalewcox just so happened to be on here.. The color of thread lockers aren't always indicative of "Strength". I learned the hard way once before.. After someone else pointed out loctites website and their product chart I realized the general rule of thumb was way off. It's times like these we learn after the fact and hopefully we don't have to back track over a repair but if we do at least we have an idea about how to best go about it.

@@wayne251975 Interesting. Applying Loctite in this video was either the first or second time I ever used the stuff, so not a lot of use history for me. Thanks again for the tips. Literally the day before I saw your used the blue stuff again on some notes I know I will have to take off perhaps 3 years from now. Hopefully no harder lessons for me down the road.
