John Deere 4020 power shift is confused. Park is 3rd gear, 8th is 5th. powershift tear down day 1

very weird symptoms. first gear on the lever is third gear on the transmission second gear on the lever is fourth gear on the transmission period seventh gear on the lever is third gear on the transmission eighth gear on the lever is fifth gear on the transmission

Hi Jon I wrote to you on my 4020 power shift a few weeks back. it would pull with inching pedal down. I rebuilt the c1 pack, also went through the shift, clutch valves, changed all springs, and even put in a new clutch valve in the housing, it was alittle scuffed.. Now it pulls more now than ever, but now no clutch pressure when pedal is down, I can't even do the drag test.. I put the 7 gauge set on it and all packs shift correctly, pressures are good. I can hold the clutch down and shift slowly, the tractor will move when 3rd thru eighth are engaged.. Deere did send me disks that changed numbers. I keep reading this manual and I'm not sure where the problem is. I was wondering if you had an idea? are the new disks the problem? Thanks again.

Should be no psi clutch pressure when pedal is down. Might have to look at C2 clutch pack for binding.

The only problem I have ever had with any of these Power Shift transmissions is the park spring. We have a Power Shift 3020 diesel on the dairy I help out on. 20 plus thousand hours and the transmission has never been touched. It used to feed cows every day for years.

We make mistakes, but they usually show up very quickly, or a lot of times you don't even finish getting it together, and you realize that you screwed up.

Well, dad and wife do a lot. She is good at helping clean parts and Gasket surfaces. For example on this 4020 when I have it completely tore down then show clean were the three point housing goes the shift cover the transmission housing to the clutch housing all them gasket surfaces. Should get that shift valve housing and all them gasket surface is cleaned up. We have a 6400 engine tore down as well and while the block crank rods and header at the Machine Shop she got the oil pan, the balancer shafts all the valve train like your rocker arms pushrods all that kind of stuff she got cleaned up Dad still gets a pretty good day out in the shop
