My dad was telling me he felt like my 66 4020’s PTO was slipping while running a round baler. I didn’t notice anything while cutting hay with a haybine. Was curious if all a guy needed was clutch pack rebuilt or there something else?

Check transmission pressure, do a little checking around the tractor. But yeah, not hard to believe that the clutch pack might be getting wore.

@johngassenhuber9872 You'd have a couple of grand at the Machine Shop to recondition the head, inspect the block and install new cam bearings, grind the crank, redo the rods with new wrist pin bushings. Couple grand for the engine kit, and you still need to buy head bolts a new crankshaft dampener Then you need to have about 800 for injectors. pump and turbo could be a few hundred or couple grand depending on damage To have 7-8 grand into a complete overhaul without any in shop labor is not uncommon today. But you have the best quality overhaul you can get. It sounds a little pricey but no way no how what I do at John Deere reman

My dad started at a JD dealer in 64. He opened his shop on the farm in 94 when the local deere dealer stopped doing ag tractors. I went to college in 93 for JD mechanics. At that time, all the guys dad was fixing for were old, he said there will be no one to fix for in a few years. So he never wanted to build a shop and have both of us go at it. Finally, we built this shop so he can retire. Now we have more work than ever.

What would be wrong with a late 3020 with synchro shift that grinds when shifting between the the gears when the tractor is warm. It does not grind until the tractor has been run a while and the tranny gets warm. Tractor was delivered to our farm new in 1972 and has around 3000 hours on it.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 760A scraper (basically a 5020) with an 8sp powershift in it. It has a reversing pto which doesn't reverse so I'm going to have to get into it. Do you know if this would be the same transmission as in some ag tractors? (obviously not the reversing pto part!) It would help to know what ag model would fit if I need some parts! Thanks.

@@Carloszepeda-v4k is it a power shift tractor So if the front end loader works that tells us that our transmission pump is working which takes a bunch of other stuff out of potential suspects. Is it possible to access the trans without splitting the tractor? (Go from above or behind the tractor?) ours only goes backwards and it’s in a stupid spot so either I don’t touch it or I rip the top or back apart. I’m guessing a gear is broken.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Ай бұрын
No you have to split the tractor twice to get to the transmission If it's an early 20 series by your left foot should be a little lever sticking up through the floorboard. That is the tow disconnect. Late 20 series and later tractors under the floor board in front of the left axle is the tow disconnect. Move that and then you can tow the tractor to the shop. Might have just lost the clutch pack for forward.

@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 on a diesel model that’s been sitting for a minimum of 10 years, does the engine need a ton of maintenance? Didnt know whether to just catalogue & disassemble the crap outta it or not given its condition. We don’t even own any flat smooth ground on our property so a teardown would likely be easier than trying to tow it unless the tractor is only 8500+lbs. thx for the reply btw

@THUNDER52 sitting for 10 years how to send the injection pump and injectors out? They could be varnished and stuck. Run through this for an old neighbor guy fixing up a tractor that sat for 12 years. Had to do the lift pump the ejection pump injectors were stuck but came out of it on their own. Changed all fluids and filters. Condensation gets in there

@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 so a complete maintenance then? Would a teardown of the engine be necessary? Ours is on a 30° angle width-wise and we can’t afford a new battery or anything rn so my main goal is to get the transmission figured out IF I can without moving it. One video showed a bolted floor panel in the cab that covered the transmission, I also didn’t know if I could see the gears if I unbolted the back of the tractor and took it apart.

@THUNDER52 if it's a power shift when you take off the transmission cover all you'll see is cast iron housing Have to split it at the clutch housing tear out the input clutch pack take a couple bolts out of the transmission and then you split it between the transmission and the clutch housing to transmission housing joint

Thank you so much! So happy to see a powershift getting torn down. I've got a 4430 8-speed with some issues... Slow shift in 2, 4, 6 and 2R, (or complete loss going movement), weak/chattery hydraulics except at 1800+ rpm . Leaks all over around the valvebodies. Seeing this gives me the confidence to dive into it a little deeper than I have thus far Thanks
