From shes 12 to 17 I worked on my uncle's farms .He would pick me up at3:45 after I got off bus n changed my clothes take me ti the field . I would jump up on the 4020 power shift with the 5 x16 hydraulic reset plow n would get off that tractor at 12 at night . We had 2 4020 s one standard shift one power shift n 2 5 x16 moldboard plows n we would 400 to 500 acted in Pennsylvania ground every year . The standard shift tractor would plow in 4 gear alot of the time while other 4020 barely could pull in 3 gear .Round we would go n the standard dhuft tractor would catch up to me in 5 . Great memories as a young man growing up on the farms .rounds

In my opinion, the 4020 was one of the best tractors ever built, especially with the power shift. I'm not surprised yours is still running after maybe 50 years. The electrical system wasn't very good though, I didn't like the generator with 2 outputs and the idea of the left side - right side systems. I was pretty young back then but we got rid of one of the batteries, got a 12 volt starter and a 12 volt alternator and used the now empty battery box for tools.
@Deandeere40203 жыл бұрын
yes the tractor still runs great and so nice to use for any task. I would agree that the batteries are the biggest issue we have as well. thanks for watching!
@robertpayne27173 жыл бұрын
Yes the split electrical system on the early 4020s was not good started on 24 volts then the electrical system was split to run on 12 volts lights and other electrical systems.....created a huge fire hazard, we had one that fried the wiring harness while in our shop thought the shop was gonna catch on fire...

Funny thing:. Both old 2 cylinder Deeres and old Farmalls shifter much better when old than this generation of tractors. I used to bale hay with an 806 back in the early 70s and it shifted Ok. My brother had one around 2015 and it was sloppy. I used a 4010 to help him and it shifted badly, too. The 40s and 50s was when quality really mattered.

I had a late model 4020 Diesel with the side console. It was the best tractor John Deere ever made. It was simple by todays standards, but, it was all steel and, easy to fix if you needed to. Someone should build one just like it today, you would sell thousands of them. but, it seems like the trend is to tractors that drive themselves, too bad. I grew up with two-cylinder John Deere, and, the last one i had was a really nice 530, another great tractor.

@thegreenerthemeaner3 жыл бұрын
No. Gear change under load was easy. Many times you could add one in these conditions. Time once upon, lots of guys had 2 different plows for different conditions. These days it is hard to find the plow matched to your old tractor and conditions. If you go to any Plow Days, a 4 bottom is an easy size to haul and unload. So many have went to scrap. I sent an F145 5-16 and a 1350-1450 6-16 to scrap years ago. Of course now I would like to have them back.
