Thanks for posting , I like a dumb ass 🤬‼️🤪 Dismantled my X485 54c deck to overhaul completely and didn’t think when it was bare shell I’d have a problem remembering where one of the idler pulley went ‼️ I see from this vid ,I have it mounted on wrong side of deck ‼️ I’m almost finished putting new deck wheels on now. I will remove the pulley and install a new belt next. Thanks again

I may be able to help you explain the different gear box brackets. In late 2004 I traded in a 445 AWS for a X485 AWS w/ the 54C deck. It never made it to the yard before I returned it to the dealer because of the loud scream coming from the deck. I thought it had a dry spindle. The next day I picked it up and they explained JD's fix for the noise. They removed the solid gear box brackets and replaced with rubber isolating brackets so the gear box wasn't directly bolted to the deck. It did make it a little quieter, but not enough to make it comparable to the much quieter 445 deck. I am assuming the bean counters at JD thought they could save a little and replace helical cut gears with straight cut in the gear box, thus producing the whine. I have no proof of the gear change. Just my guess.

I believe the newer gearboxes use spiral cut gears and no isolators (solid mounting). The older ones with the straight cut gears are supposed to use rubber mounts but the mounts wear out.

What modifications are required to use a 54C on a 445. I can’t find any 54-HD Lawn decks that came on the 445.

I've got a question. Do the newer HC decks fit on the older X700 tractors? I've got a 2009 X720 with the 54C deck, and have always been curious if the newer HC decks will attach.

If you want to mount an HC deck you need the newer rear draft arm assembly. Deere calls it a "hitch" but it's one-piece - both draft arms and a rod going across to connect them. Part number is AM144795 and it's about $200. The HC deck will NOT fit AWS tractors except X734 and X739 which they are designed for. The rear linkage is in the way (7-iron is same shape and wouldn't fit either).

Does that mean that 54HC will fit on 2008 x740 (2wd) if the new hitch is installed?

is blade speed different on HC deck? Gear box ratios change with any of updates?

One difference you forgot to Note the new style deck is a drive over deck The old style is not
