Pulled the old 1956 John Deere 70 Diesel Standard out of the barn to take to Spring Plow Day. Tried out a 4 bottom plow but switched over to a 3 bottom Oliver Plow. #farming #tractor #johndeere #diesel #antique #america

The 70 sounds great and smooth and handles that 3 bottom VERY well, I think you made the right choice going down a bottom
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, the 3 bottom plow was good. On the 4 bottom plow, if we had moved the tongue over, then our tires would have been in the furrow, like it should be on a 4 bottom, and it would have pulled better/easier. But the guy we were borrowing the plow from had it set up for his Oliver with 23.1x26" tires, which don't fit in the furrow very well. Anyway, we didn't want to change his set up, so we just went with the 3 bottom. And the tractor was happier.

It runs like a top and it's never had any engine work. I love the 70. The guy we bought it from had a row crop 70D that was bought by his dad new. That 70 had 22k hours on it and still ran perfectly.

Brings back memories of 1960s when I spent many hours over 5 summers on a 70 keeping weeds off summer fallow. Didn't do any plowing as the boss already had that done by the time school was out and I started for the summer. No hearing protection in those days so need hearing aids now. No cab or AC either, so ate lots of dust. Going with the wind was nasty. Thanks for posting this.

5 gallons for that long sounds REALLY good tome! Shame you don't have a tilt top but the slope on that trailer will help a ;lot. Glad to see Pop doing his thing. I hauled a 20 ton track loader all over these hills with a 20 ton Rogers tilt top. Never made a baubel. Wir brakes too! Bless Yall

If someone can work an old two cylinder Deere hard enough to burn more than 2 gallons of diesel per hour then I want to see it! And we thought about buying some aluminum ramps that are 10 feet long and then we wouldn't have to mess around with dovetailing the trailer. But this ramps are like $800 each! And big long ramps like that are kinda sketchy driving up and down. So that's why we're doing the dovetail.
@lewiemcneely9143
@lewiemcneely9143 2 ай бұрын
@@jonelsonster Sounds like a plan to me. Anything that'll make it easier and with the implements too, you need a long trailer. And a long ramp IS sketchy at best.The outfit had a drop deck lowboy for the dragline. It worked fine but I had to tie the bucket to the end of the trailer so I could pull and walk at the same time. Those slick pads would scoot when they had dust (dry) on them but the pulling fixed that. And I really like the two bangers. Remind me of the old lo speed Cat motors I got to play with and get paid for it. REALLY good times!

This ground is very sandy, so that helps. Our farm is about an hour south of here and we will be plowing about 30 acres this fall and we might only be able to pull a two bottom plow down there. We'll see.

Looks like a lot of fun.......I spent a lot of time plowing....and farming with a 70 diesel very similar to yours. It even had the same wide adjustable front axle as yours. I haven't seen many of those. Seems someone converted yours to direct electric start.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, someone told us the adjustable front axle was an option some 70 standards had. But I haven't seen enough 70 standards to know how common or uncommon they are. And yes, the guy we bought this tractor from back in 2010 did the E-start conversation. It may not be original, but man oh man does it work well.

Regarding gear selection, RPM, and throttle setting when you were in 3rd the exhaust was clear, but in fourth you were continuously get heavy puffs of black smoke indicating unburned fuel which means as you said the engine is at full throttle and over loaded so it's not burning all the fuel. Back in 3rd, the RPM is the same due to the governor, but the throttle setting is no longer full and your maximizing your fuel burn and the load on the crank and rod bearing is considerably less, so the engine will last much longer!

I can't remember for sure but I seem to remember you either had a 70 or a G on a Dyno that was struggling . I was thinking about that on this video if it was used. Anyway I hope you were able to give it some TLC. That indeed is s tight fit and it sounds super great.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 2 ай бұрын
It was our G that was down on power. It has a DLTX 71 carb (from an A) on it when we did the Dyno. We'll need to put the big nut DLTX 51 back onto it. With more fuel the engine might be happier.

HYDRAULIC BEAVER TAIL Fifth wheel ! Why dovetail when you can find a used trailer like you want ? Great video thanks
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster Ай бұрын
Is cost were not an issue, a hydraulic beavertail would be nice. But we figure we can convert to a dovetail for less than $500.

What is the difference between the 60 and 70?
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster Ай бұрын
Size mostly. The 70 is about 15 HP (ish) and 1200 pounds bigger than the 60 (55 HP vs 40 HP) The 70 also offered a diesel engine option (ours is a diesel) and the 60 was only gas. Both could be had in row-crop or wheatland configurations.

@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 2 ай бұрын
We have several 2 cylinder John Deeres. Some are mine, but most are my dad's. We have: 1944 A, 1948 high clearance AN, 1948 A, 1950 AR, 1940 BO, 1949 B, 1948 D, 1952 G, 1940 H, 194x LA (serial tag missing), 1950 M, 1950 R with 26"rear tires, 1950 R with 34" tires, 1956 70-D standard, 1959 430, 1959 830-industrial, 1960 830, 1969 3020, and a 4240 (I think it's a 1978). All of those run. And then we have two model As that are parts tractors and will never run again. So 21 John Deeres. And yes, that's the 830 my dad bought that had the cab.
