Nice fix! Glad to be out a couple hours instead of a couple Grand! Your Baylor have that like one inch by inch and an eighth rectangle solid shaft that goes into the tube? You think if you're pulled the solid shaft out that you can clean it with a wire wheel and make it slick again? What is real creepy is when you split a 4955 and it's a thin wall tube with holes drilled through it and it takes all the power from the engine. Simply Amazing.

If you're having problems with the sticky PTO on the round baler try lubricating the shaft with graphite instead of Greece with our round baler I know there was a problem with chaff end dust building up in the Greece I know we had a problem with a sticky PTOshaft and I took the shaft out and buffed it with a wire wheel and then used graphite I don't remember if it was spray graphite or corn planter graphite probably planter graphite cuz that's what we had available I know our New Holland round baler the problem with the PTO sliding was the shield was slightly bent hopefully your repair fixed the problem have a good day Brad 👍😁
@LVFFarmVlogs4 жыл бұрын
I'll try graphite. I think the issue is dirt gets mixed with the grease and makes it bind.
@stevensmith94824 жыл бұрын
@@LVFFarmVlogs the other problem we had besides the round baler was the side Hill drive shaft on the Bean Head to the combine those were almost impossible keep Bean dust out of the Grease and when the combine rocked would tear the shaft off the head they're just held on with a bolt it would just break the bolt I think that's what we used the graphite on first and it work good so then we did the round baler PTO shaft

Maintenance is critical 🙂. Pto on baler shaft is problematic. My 6180 did similar...got lucky, resistance in 540/1000 shift cable. I didn’t destroy my gears, but they were sounding like yours. AFTER fixing cable, read book...shift PTO regularly it said 😉! Hopefully things work 👍🏻

It is quite amazing to me that the small teeth can do all that work of driving the PTO when you consider the HP passing through it and compared to the size of the other gears. Are you convinced that the device that engages this ring has adequate throw and power to do that job successfully? If your correct that it is the baler causing problems wouldn't it be mighty wise to find out just what is wrong with it as it is such a pig to connect / disconnect? Do the UJs rattle and complain at all when making tight sharp turns? I assume the two halves of the baler shaft are cut to the right length so that they cannot bottom out when making turns or travelling over rough ground? (I am thinking of anything that puts pressure on the tractors PTO stub. I know this may be somewhat insulting but is your drawbar length correct, drawbar holes egged out oval, too thin a drawbar pin etc).
@LVFFarmVlogs4 жыл бұрын
Everything on the baler PTO checks out, other than the shaft gets dust in the grease and that makes it a bear to slide in and out. Someone suggested graphite lube instead of grease, which would prevent dirt from caking in with the grease. The PTO has always chattered on dips and sharp turns. I have consulted other New Holland owners of these early model balers with a short PTO shaft and they all complain of the same issue. But, I am not saying its 100% the balers fault, the tractor does have almost 13,000 hours in it, so it could be normal wear. It just seemed odd to me that I baled one field with no issues, road 10 miles to next field and instantly have issues (out back roads are about as smooth as a corn cob!) Kind of made me think it was from all the jarring from transporting from one field to the next
@samiovesen38874 жыл бұрын
I would try using oil on the two half's of the pto rather than grease as grease drys out and get hard. If that doesn't help you probably need to replace the tubes of the pto shaft as they will be binding because of wear. I can't remember if those early NH balers had rep
@samiovesen38874 жыл бұрын
Sorry dad phone. I can't remember if those early NH balers had the square tube that was welded or not. I hope this will help as this is what I have had happened to me in the past with pto shafts that have been hard to get on and off.
@LVFFarmVlogs4 жыл бұрын
I think its a solid shaft on one side. Its the grease gets dry and hard and dust mixes in making it worse. I can slide it by hand. A new baler with the long shaft and cv joint would be handy! Just gotta find that money tree! Lol.

I can see how they get away with the little spline gears since it drives on all the teeth all the time verses the big gears which only drive on a couple teeth. Still it would look a lot better if they had made the drive ring a little thicker. Sure glad you were able to get running so easily I find this things often result in a $2000+ parts bill.

Careful with the shaft. One of you tractor is build in Germany with Metric system and the other one is built in USA and you are one of the 3 countries that don't use metric.
@LVFFarmVlogs4 жыл бұрын
I have a full set of SAE and Metric tools 😉
@andrecarrier60984 жыл бұрын
@@LVFFarmVlogs Yes like us in CANADA. My point is if you used parts from German tractor on a American tractor. The parts look the same but it could be not interchangeable. John Deer like other companies have factory to build parts and factory to assembly parts. The factory build part in Europe will do in metric and the factory in the USA (I don't know). On Gm Vehicle(The one for Canadian market). They used a mix of metric and SAE. Thanks
@LVFFarmVlogs4 жыл бұрын
Before i swapped parts, I'd go on Deere's website and cross the part numbers to be sure. Yeah, i worked in a repair shop fir many years, its aggravating when manufacturers use both standard and metric on the same vehicle/machine!

The splines on the collar is no different than the splines on the shaft, they hold!! The collar spline should be stronger, because it's bigger diameter. Easy fix anyway!! Just too bad you had to go to all the work to make sure... Who would have thought??? I would imagine the previous owner probably didn't use the 540 much, or it should have been an issue long before now....
