I love my AMT600! They are tough. They can handle the load with ease. Mud is not a problem when you lock in all 4 back wheels. It is just a great machine.

The AMT 600 is such a curiosity nowadays. eBay listings often erroneously refer to it as a "Gator", even though it isn't- the AMT was the predecessor of the Gator, and all the AMT models (600, 622, 626) only had 5 wheels as opposed to the Gator's 4 or 6 wheel configurations. As a predecessor to the Gator, it seems that it was generally disliked once the Gator came out, particularly for its chain drive (as opposed to the Gator's belt drive). At the time though, there really wasn't anything else like it, and it seems that it's gained a better reputation in the past 5 years, especially with homesteaders and small farmers who can't find anything else as useful and affordable (though parts for it are increasingly difficult to find). I used an AMT 600 almost every day for 6 years when I worked on a farm, and it was every bit as good as the Gator I experienced later on. We had an original model from 1989, and a later model from circa 1991, and the later model was slightly better, although it was a bit wider. Regardless, the AMT 600 remains an oddity today, and I think a lot of people will say that they'd like the AMT to make a comeback in an improved form.

As far as I was told, JD coined the term Gator based on the look of the amt 600.

@@MattDragonTamer I wasn't aware of that, it does superficially look like a gator's mouth with the front mudguard.
