When I inserted the new bearings, I used a 1 1/16" socket to tap them into place. Makes it easy to get them in straight. A 3/8" extension pops the old bushings out easily.

Remove the inside covers of the bearings before placement. Then the zerk fitting will still do its job

I much agree, kinda a waste to fill the large cavity with grease if the teflon ring keeps it out...lol

if installed the correct way, he has them backwards

For sure just like a deck spindle, nock it apart and brg out remove cover on each brg to inside

That defeats the purpose of a sealed bearing then. There is no point in greasing these bearings after they're installed, I mean that is the point to not have to. Are you driving down the interstate at 80 mph with your mower? Having grease in the cavity will help keep rust away. He did waste time greasing these sealed bearings, absolutely no reason to do that.

Interesting approach. A bit confusing as you refer to bushings as bearings at times and exclusively call the spindle an axle. I’m sure this helped numerous ppl who were planning to do this procedure . 👍🏻

Your Dad never showed you how to pack a wheel bearing, did he? Clean the old grease and dirt off the wheel and axle, leaving that contamination in the wheel and on the axle is counter productive.Leave the inner seals off the new bearings and use the grease fitting to fill the cavity with new clean grease after cleaning the grease fitting off also. Any job worth doing is worth doing right.

The repair seemed to be an upgrade and done correctly. If you ask your Dad, he will say in the past bearings were not pre greased and sealed like today...

Both the spindles need to be replaced to do a proper repair.

What's the bearing number you used

There are a couple of reference part numbers, AM127304 and 532009040. I used the 532009040 Xike bearing ID 3/4 x OD 1-3/8.

so in other words, John Deere deliberately designed those front axles to wear down and destroy itself shortly after the warranty expires. And I'll bet John Deere dealers NEVER advise their customers to install bearings before the axle destroys itself or the wheel.
@brianclark21194 жыл бұрын
I would not be so quick to call this a manufactures deliberate attempt to design in a failure. Bushings are more than adequate for low speed operation. Most lawn tractors operate under 5 mph qualifying as low speed Bushings do wear and lead to play on the shaft, if they were steel like the bearings use in this video and seized because of inadequate lubrication the axle would wear and cost even more to maintain should the bearing fail and seize. Now that would be a manufacturer's design error. By your logic Shear bolts should be grade 8 bolts and we all know the problem there.The wheel slop is a easy way to spot flaw that should let the operator know of the lawn tractor's condition. Failure to take appropriate timely maintenance steps qualifies more as a operational error.

@@brianclark2119 I have yet to see one mechanic recommend replacing a bearing with a bushing on an axle. I also have yet to see one front axle on a lawn tractor being worn down by a bearing.

My mechanic told me bushings are better for heavy load capacities. I'm gonna keep the bushings. But to each his own.
