* forgive me, I’m not a John Deere expert*. It’s Thanksgiving Day 2017. I’m driving a restored John Deere G 2 cylinder. This is a styled G. I realize I made a few mistakes identifying some of the controls. I’m a Farmall guy so Deere is a little foreign to me. You will also see a Case IH 1666 combine, and a New Holland SpeedRower 260. Thanks for watching and Subscribe for more. Also follow me on Instagram.

One of the best tractor designs of all time Displacement 412.5 ci Bore/Stroke 6.125x7.00 inches 156 x 178 mm Compression 4.2:1 Rated RPM 975 These things pulled like freight trains. All of the 2 cylinder tractors did. I was sorry to see them go away from the design. Easy to work on, reliable. What can I say LOL

That G is running perfectly. One thing about 2 cyl. John Deere is when you lug them down, they will recover again but Farmall you are done. You will have to stop & shift down because they have such a hard time to recover without shifting down. Also John Deere 2 cyl ( from experience) will last longer before an overhaul.

Thanks for sharing! Those 2 cylinder engines by their design were a fairly low horsepower, but a very high torque rise engine. Horsepower is the ability of an engine to pull against resistance until the engine loses 15% of rated rpm. Torque rise is the ability of the engine to pull against resistance until the engine fails. The performance of a tractor in the field is a combination of horsepower and torque rise. Most people assume that an old 2 cylinder John Deere wouldn't be able to pull much because of the lower horsepower. But then they are surprised to find out that the two cylinder John Deere does pull much better than they expected. And the reason for it is the high torque rise.

Learned how to drive on JD A’s, B’s & the big boy on the farm the G! The G would pull a new holland baler and hay wagon at the same time even with the front wheels off the ground going up a hill. This guy sure loves Farmall’s. We had one too but only used it for pulling empty hay wagons and running a belt drive silage blower.

Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. Brings back a lot of memories. One thing I will say is that if you were going to plow with it all day long, you would probably soon put a muffler on it, instead of a straight pipe! Like all 2 cylinders, they were kind of a low horsepower, but high torque rise engine, so they performed a lot better in the field than you would think, based on their horsepower. Thanks again! And thanks for not covering up the sound of the engine with music!

Nice video but you don't know anything about the levers on the John Deere G. You engaged the PTO with the small lever thinking you were going from first to second gear. The large lever forward of the small is used for putting the transmission into 2,4,6 gears. I spent hours on a G.

When you actually use the tractor hard all day long the driver fatigue is so much less with the G over 4 cylinder tractor buzz vibration. I never shifted a john deere on the fly as it grinds the gears unnecessarily. Be happy you have such a nice tractor. I H is ok in its own way. no need to apologize for any of these old fine tractors.

I’m not really sure. The tractor isn’t mine. The guy that owns it has so many of the 2 cylinders I can’t even list them. The G is one of my favorites. He has an R that’s pretty nice

Those old John's would get dirt in carb. Float would feed gas down over night. Fill cylinders. Lock it. Have to pull spark plugs and turn over to spray gas out. You learned quick to turn off gas up up at the tank when you parked them. Many hours on a John Deere.

Don't know about being hard on the clutch, but you could change the clutch plates in the field in just a few minutes.
