The best how not to video I've seen on this transmission.
@edwardfay74406 ай бұрын
Exactly. It will not remove all the old fluid, and not cleaning around the filler bung first is not a good idea, bound to have let dirt fall into the transmission, and ruin the oil flow to the pressure plates and pistons, to say the least.
@klu5703 ай бұрын
I was about to post the same thing. Should of pressure washed and completely cleaned plug area before trying this. Unit holds a little over 2 quarts and he sucked out a quart, dumped a bunch of dirt in the hole to condemn the unit to certain death. But did you see the loose belt? Without a doubt this was his issue, now the tractor is trashed.
@evans19462 жыл бұрын
Clean the cap area before you remove it so dirt doesn't fall into the transmission. Compressed air works ok, best is to remove the transaxle so nothing can fall in from above in the frame of the tractor. It's really best to flip the transaxle to drain it so all the fluid is removed. There are two compartments inside and a single large tube cannot reach to the bottom of both compartments to suck out all the fluid and debris. The low end sealed Tuff Torq transaxles typically hold about 2.5 quarts and when flipped over at least 2 quarts will normally drain.
@honestabe73493 жыл бұрын
great. I would worry about the dirt on the top of the cap though. Maybe pressure clean first.

JD recommends not to overfill the trans - oil level should be almost one inch below the top of the oil cap. Not dumping the entire contents of the trans out leaves all the nastys still in the trans and will cause further damage. I would also suggest using a new oil cap to ensure the seal is tight.
@wayne19592 жыл бұрын
the trans has 2 compartments so at best you only changed the oil in one half and im guessing it was the gear side not the pump side. I think you were on to a good idea but i think its more beneficial to drop it and drain it properly. Thanks for posting though.

Even if you only get a quart out, it’s better than not doing it at all which is what most people don’t do. my man

It's like 6bolts to take the whole thing out. And if u take the fuel tank out u get wayyyy better access to the top of that thing anyways.

Thank you this video, it helped me out a lot. I actually raised the deck rear end to access the transmission fill plug, since it had leaked a lot of transmission oil from a bad seal. I had done this before to get the gas tank out to clean it. I know it's not the correct way, but you can't even see any creases from lifting up the rear end and its much easier. I just could not get the fill cap to budge using you're method. The fill cap was the hardest part, a real pain to get off. I used a small screwdriver that I ground down to make it sharp as a knife, then got a tiny bit lifted on the cap. I switched to a hook screwdriver (basically has a really sharp mini hook on the end like a "pirate's hand" hook). I used a 12V pump to suck about 1 quart out of the transmission. The Tuff Torque T40J transmission holds exactly 2.2 quarts. Next year I will drop the rear end to get to the transmission, open it up and clean the filter and the lower magnet. I was under time pressure this time around. To check the oil level from the top, I used a small palm screwdriver with permanent marker line at exactly 7/8ths of an inch, which is the level to fill to from the top. You DON'T want to over fill it. Just place the palm screw driver in the fill hole and note where the oil comes. to. I used the cap from the trans oil to add slowly till I got exactly to the marked spot. Make sure the spin the wheels backwards and forwards a few times as you are filling.

I would have used a large measuring cup for the old fluid, so you'd know exactly how much new fluid, to put back in. JD should have made it easily serviceable with fill-drain plugs.
@deebedwell5808 ай бұрын
For the people complaining that not all of the fluid was replaced - that is true. That being, a partial remedy to that is to change the fluid multiple times. Each change is diluting the “old” fluid. Is it perfect? No. What you’re missing is how far that some of us will go to avoid more work!!
@chazzx78972 ай бұрын
Well if you want to do it the complete way you would replace the transmission filter inside of it to, but that requires unbolting the whole underside of the transmission and replacing the sealant to do. I mean you can probably get away with just replacing just the fluid once every other fluid change, but I wouldn't go more than that without doing it.
@istonemind6 ай бұрын
Truly the most ingenious method to deal with such formidable undertaking. What about the filter replacement, if any and if needed?🤗
@chazzx78972 ай бұрын
It's a good idea to replace the filler cap on the older John Deeres since they used a rubber cap that will start cracking over time. The newer models use brass caps. In fact I think the replacement caps are nothing but brass now.
@winchracing645 ай бұрын
FYI if you stick your finger in that hole theres an object you can grab with your fingers and remove. I can't remember if it's a screen. Also further back on top is a vent cap you can remove an can get a better angle thro the deck height selector and you can get the hose all the way to the bottom.

I would use a compressed air vacuum pump, because I have got one. Thanks for the video, thats pretty well how I will de doing it one day. Parker units are so much easier and better than Tuff Torq
@aj122712 жыл бұрын
I don't know if Tuff Torq is owned by Parker but I can tell you this. I have a Toro ride on spreader sprayer with a Tuff Torq K58 transaxle. The rubber cap that this guy removed on this video is stamped with "Parker" brand. I know this because this rubber cap cracked & started losing fluid. We thought it was a Parker transaxle so we searched & searched for a replacement cap. Nothing. So when we Google searched the K58 stamp on metal case, that's when we found out it was actually a Tuff Torq. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience.

So the magnet doesn't get in your way? Specifically the one under the cap
@benjurqunov2 жыл бұрын
I’d just drill and fit plugs. But unless you know the Tuff Torq spec for drill points, You’d be better off to take out the tranny and open its case to drill. While there, might as well change its filter. From then on, changing oil is easy. Your tranny will last long time.

IMHO it would take like 10 minutes to pull a few bolts, remove the wheels, unhook the linkage and belt…. That way you could get all the fluid out and clean the upper magnet. Since that thing looks like it’s been seeping, Tuff torque offers a kit with fluid, filter, new seals, and cap… might have been worth doing.

@@JeffinTD You’re the man, nicely explained. Say, do you know of a frame stabilizer kit? My frame ripped which was neat… not! hah. Manual fabrication happened. Web research indicates this a known-issue on mine (1-2 acre home model sub $3k) claiming as John Deere including many other “major brand” similar riding mowers using this chassis/transaxle combo. Tx!

I may be confused but I didn't see him fix anything 😕 What he did in this video unfortunately is a complete waste of time and money. If the pump is weak and your transmission is slowing down clean transmission fluid isn't gonna fix it. I applaud your effort and you won't believe how handy that little pump is but the end result is nothing changed. Nothing got fixed

I just drained, cleaned and refilled the k46 on my mower and it now pulls hills much better. The oil looked very bad - thin and grey. I replaced with 5w40 full synthetic. The oil they ship with is not good and breaks down quickly. They actually recommend changing it at 50 hrs. If it starts slipping and you catch it early, changing oil can delay the need for a rebuild.

I just dont see why people dont take out the transmission and do it right. its not like taking out a cars transmission or anything, its rather simple. You have 6 bolts, and 3 connections to remove along with the belt, and thats it. It took me all but 5 minutes to do.

Really it’s like 10 or 15 minutes to take the wheels off, pull like 6 bolts, and unhook two linkages…. and the unit is on the work bench. Tuff Torque also sells a kit with seals, filter, sealant, new caps, and fluid- which I think I’d have done on this unit. Much better than the plastic, no parts available jobs you see on some mowers.

Oil coming out that clean didn't need changing in the first place. It takes little effort to take that trans out and put it back in when it becomes necessary.
