Just got an enclosure at a bargain basement price. Took two of us to stretch the fabric. Works great. Came without instructions so your video was invaluable. Thanx from NH. Bill

I'd love to have one for my tractor too, but these types of cabs are too cost prohibitive. You can pick up one of these fabric enclosures for under $600 CDN.

Hello there Al, you did an excellent instruction video for all who might be considering buying one of these enclosures from John Deere. I also initially bought one of these for my X540. When I got it home, I discovered that none of the covering materials were in the box, the only thing that I had was the frame. At first I was disappointed, but then I decided to dry assemble the frame in order to get some idea of how the enclosure was going to fit on the tractor, and how stable the frame was. After partially assembling the frame it became obvious that the enclosure was not consistent with the quality that one expects from John Deere. I was glad that there was no covering material, as now I had a valid reason to return the enclosure to my J.D. dealer. The great folks at John Deere need to take a serious look at this enclosure, and try to design something that is more in line with other cab manufacturers. I would recommend anyone who is seriously looking for a cab, or enclosure to look for a HARD TOP cab. The john deere enclosure would make a great place to grow extremely tall plants during the spring.

No argument that the hard-shell cabs are better ... but also way more expensive. Unfortunately you evaluated the sturdiness before being able to complete the installation. The frame by itself will be a bit unsturdy on your machine. The fabric is what tightens up the whole frame assembly. It makes a huge difference once the fabric is stretched over the frame. I still stand by my recommendation that this enclosure, for the money, is quite a good alternative to the hard shell enclosures. I've been using mine for multiple seasons and am very happy with how well it's held up. It keeps me warm and dry on all our cold Alberta winters ... so I'm happy :)

Hi Al, you are correct about the price for the J.D. enclosure being a good deal. For me seeing the frame, and the fact that the enclosure would not fit under my standard garage door when my tractor had tire chains on, and I also wanted to add lights and a beacon was the point that I decided to leave my snow blower , tire chains, and weights on the tractor, and buy a cab from original. Now the tractor is permanently set up for the winter, and I don't have to change from mower deck to blower. I guess it all depends on your own personal preference, I bought a X720 to use for mowing, to replace the X540. So again thanks for your very well done video, J.D. should send you a commission for your kind, and thoughtful work.

Another GREAT video! JD should hire you and your videographer (wife) to do installation videos on their products!

Bit late with my reply, but thanks for the compliment. My next series of videos will still focus on the X540, but have more to do with maintenance. How to do the basics ... grease bearings, oil / hydraulic changes, fuel filter, etc.

Thanks for the excellent video. I'm on my third year with a John Deere enclosure on an X354 and it was a total pain assemblying it. The plastic windows are too wrinkled to see through and there are large gaps around the footwellsplus all of the black mesh sections defeat the purpose of the enclosure. I would not recommend this for the X300 series units. The Original Tractor Cab Company also has a cab that looks like it's a lot better fit and function.

I wonder why 4 numbnuts gave your video a thumbs down? The time it took you to make this was a lot longer than the video ran...that's laudable in and of itself. I hope you and your wife don't let such fools trouble you; after all, trolls will troll.

Doesn't bother me at all. But thanks for your encouragement. I did this video to help out others after seeing other videos that didn't seem to go into enough detail. I certainly didn't do it for the 'likes' as I'm not going to monetize any of my videos. Thanks again!

Thanks for the detailed instructions. Just bought an X540 with enclosure and blower. What's you're opinion regarding rear chains for snow blowing? We have about 500 ft of gravel driveway but also 50 ft of paved asphalt in front of the garage. Not sure if I'll be slipping without chains but don't want to chew up the paved portion either.
@albertaal65794 жыл бұрын
I bought a set of chains when I purchased my tractor in 2013. Haven't put them on yet. In Alberta we get mostly dry, cold snowfalls, which don't really require chains ... unless we get a massive dump more than 10". I have a 300 foot gravel driveway ... with no hill, but I also blow the snow off my neighbour's 300 foot driveway with a bit of a slope. No issues so far. However, if you live in an area with wet snowfalls, you might want to throw them on for grip. And last point ... chains will damage pavement. There are rubber type of grips you can get instead. Not as effective, but don't ruin the pavement. Some snowblowing tips ... 1) Use 4 suitcase weights on the back (none on the front) 2) set the mower height adjustment know so that the blower edge is about 1/4 to 1/2" off the ground. You do this by raising the blower to full height with the hydraulics, then adjust the lever. Lower the blower to see if it's at the right height. If not, repeat the process. Good luck!!!

@@albertaal6579 Thanks for the reply. Based on your experience I'll try without chains. Our driveway is flat and also get usually dry lake effect snow in Northeast Wisconsin.

I am planning to buy this for my tractor but I have a sleeve hitch with the leaver arm that comes up next to you on the right hand side...would I need to remove that?
@albertaal65796 жыл бұрын
No idea. I just bought the hydraulic sleeve hitch this year, but haven't installed it yet. Did you give it a try yet?

Excellent video! I got one of these that came with the Deere I bought but there were no instructions at all, so you really saved me! Mine came with a “bra” style cover for the front but I don’t see that you have one. I can’t figure how to put it on. Any ideas?
@albertaal65794 жыл бұрын
Never had one. Never needed one. I can blow snow in -25 deg F without any issues. Check out the tractor forum at ... www.mytractorforum.com/12-john-deere-forum/ . There will be someone who can answer your question ... or a post that already exists.

Don't they make hard enclosures too?

I also have this same cab only the part number has changed to 55438. But, again it comes without installation instructions, so how are we to know the sequence of installation? Does John Deere have instructions available, or are we on our own?

how bad has that scratched up the tractor? just wondering
@albertaal65798 жыл бұрын
Good question. In my video I was a bit sloppy putting the frame on the tractor. Normally I'm a lot more careful, and there's no risk of scratching during install. Once the frame is installed and the cover on, the only area that 'may' scratch over time is the front lower connection for the door, that physically connects to the shell of the tractor. So far I don't see any scratches, but I would assume over time there may be. This is the 3rd season I've used it.
@gordbaker8964 жыл бұрын
You would need to install that cover in a warm garage!

I have one of these and I think it sucks. Way to tight would like to see the folks who designed it put it on
@albertaal65797 жыл бұрын
The first time I installed it, it took about 2 hours. The fabric was brutal to fit over the frame ... especially the door. But I'm glad it's tight. Makes for a really nice unit once it's assembled. In the spring when I remove the enclosure door, I leave the fabric installed on the door frame and simply set it aside for next winter. I remove the fabric for the main part of the enclosure, but leave the frame largely assembled for storage. Saves a bit of time when I reassemble. It now takes about 10 minutes to assemble. Plus the fabric does stretch a bit to allow for easier installation in years 2, 3, etc. I'm on year 3 with it, and love it!!!
