Thank you for bringing this song back to life! I used to play this song during my youth while star-gazing. This entire album, Windsong, is tremendous.

This is one of John’s most unique songs ever. The banjo was played by John Sommers. Lee Holdridge scored the orchestra parts and led it. I believe the drummer was Hal Blaine. This song has always conjured beautiful images in my mind. If you listen to the lyrics they are part astronomy and part Greek mythology. The Swan is the constellation Cygnus. Hercules a mythological hero of that time period. Andromeda is our nearest galaxy and a mythological character. Apollo was a Greek god, Orpheus a musician.and Vega a star in the heavens. This is a beautiful song unlike any other song John recorded. This song fits no standard category of music. The orchestra soars in this one. It is unique. Thank you for reviewing it.

Thank you so much for reacting to my request Rogue. I am so glad you enjoyed it. John is (and will always be) my all time favorite musical artist. Singer/Songwriter/Philanthropist who loved the environment long before it was fashionable, cared deeply about his fellow Human Beings and wanted all of us to know to love life, love learning, love being curious and love each other. So here are those beautiful lyrics for you and I truly hope you continue to look into and enjoy his music. RIP JD. His spirit joined as so was formed ten thousand years ago. Between the swan and Hercules where even dark clouds glow. To live with grace, to ride the swell, to yet be strong of will. To love the wind, to learn its song, an empty space to fill. Apollo taught me to rhyme, Orpheus taught me to play. Andromeda cast down her sign and Vega lights my way. Smoke rings in a galaxy, an endless flight through time. Lyra gave her harp to him and left him free to climb. A winter's journey from the moon to reach the summer sun. To rise again, to sing for you a song that's yet unsung. Apollo taught me to rhyme, Orpheus taught me to play. Andromeda cast down her sign and Vega lights my way. His spirit joined as so was formed ten thousand years ago. Between the swan and Hercules where even dark clouds glow. To live with grace, to ride the swell, to yet be strong of will. To love the wind, to learn its song, an empty space to fill.

I had the pleasure of meeting him and shaking his hand by the skating rink in Rockefeller Center, Manhattan, NY many years ago. He was a down to earth guy next door type. You know, the kind of guy that would mow your lawn if you were not feeling well. Rest in peace.

Yes, he was....but a very conflicted man who suffered from bipolar disorder (in my opinion as a physician as his mood swings are there in his songs) and alcohol abuse (common in bipolar disorder). He suffered also because he wanted to make so many things right in the world (the environmental issues especially) while his own personal world fell apart mid-way and later in his career. He was, in many ways, the clown on the outside but crying on the inside

One of the John Denver song I listen to - more than any other - is CALYPSO --- it's a soaring song - an ode to the ocean science expeditionary ship (originally a Royal Navy minesweeper) used by Jaques Cousteau on his research and film making voyages. He said he wrote the chorus in his first 15 minutes on board the ship. (Actually he said the chorus wrote itself) I think you would find it more than interesting.

So quick story, shortly before John's accident he played for a banquet in Houston for the SHO (Shell Houston Open). It was at the hotel I and my then late wife worked at. I don't like treating anybody differently, so if celebrities came in I would treat them as regular people and not like I was a fan. I'd give them their space so they could relax. My wife on the other hand... anyway, when he went to play my wife wanted to watch a little. So I took over her duties. When she came back she was crying. She said he had such a sad look on his face she just wished she could have given him a hug. A few weeks later he had died.

I just played this for the second time and I don’t believe what I just heard! “That banjo was giving it that funky sound.” Ah sh@& you don’t say? All my life I’ve been listening to Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Steely Dan, Rufus, The Gap Band and more like that to get my funk on. No no, I’ve been doing that all wrong. I need to listen to John Denver’s banjo to know true funk. 🤣🤣🤣🤣...oh man this chic’s a trip😂😂😂😂

I happened across this channel serendipitously. This song is one of my favs of JD. I dont quite get why so many of these "Song Reactors" seldom, if ever, follow along w the song reading the lyrics. It matters NOT who you listen to or the type of music....if it has lyrics, you should follow along w them for without them, your appreciation of a song is diminished greatly. I am not squaring this criticism on Rogue alone, but all those who have channels of this kind. Re-listen to the song w lyrics in front of you, Rogue, it may make a difference; I know it does with me concerning songs I like musically (lyrics are the flip side of that coin). Even so, the meaning of lyrics are not straight forward. Co-written w JD by Joe Henry, both had passions for space and the stars and the song connects this love with specific references to stars in the constellations Cygus, Vega, and Andromeda. If you read up on these, you'll discover the meaning of "The Swan, Lyra and her harp, Orpheus, the Summer Sun (Triangle), and Apollo. Its a celebration, I believe, that we all come from stardust (this is proven science in that the same elements found in stars are in us) and Denver felt the stars he came from were in these constellations (again if you read up on them you'll see why). Being a spiritual men, Denver/Henry weaved faith in there as well as we were created with the stars and Cygnus is also known as the Northern Cross. Don't know if my 2 cents helped but there you go.
