Thank you for reacting to Spirit. It is one of John’s most unique songs, part astronomy and part Greek mythology. The instrument was a banjo and I believe played by John Sommers (the guy who wrote “Thank God I’m A Country Boy.”) The lyrics speak of the heavens and ancient times. The Swan is the constellation of Cygnus. Hercules the Roman version of Heracles the son of Zeus. Vega is the second brightest star in the sky. In Greek mythology the god Apollo had a son with a human woman. The son’s name was Orpheus. Orpheus was a musician of great talent on the harp. When Orpheus died, Apollo, the god of poetry and music threw Orpheus into the heavens to become a constellation. There is a ring nebula in the constellation Lyra that looks like a tiny smoke ring. John said he used to fantasize that he once lived in that ring nebula in Lyra, among the stars and in the Spirit that lives eternally. Orpheus was the musician, and Lyra the harp, and John felt they symbolized who he was as a singer and musician. Andromeda in Greek mythology was the daughter of Cepheus, King of Aethiopia who was sacrificed to the god Poseidon but was rescued by Perseus. Andromeda is also the name of the nearest galaxy 2.5 million light-years away that is on a collision course with the Milky Way. These are the images in the lyrics. This song fits no known category of pop music. It stands alone and Lee Holdrige’s orchestra just soars in it. Thank you so much for your reaction.

Oh this brought tears to my eyes. I was transported to my youth. John Denver was a musical staple in my house growing up. He got my family and I through many tough times with his sweet and inspirational songs. He was our musical therapist of sorts. I was fortunate enough to see him live before he died tragically doing what he loved. Flying his glider. This particular song is my favorite. The music and the singing just lifts your spirits. The lyrics had many astronomy references to Apollo, Orpheus, Andromeda, Vega, etc John Denver was fascinated with astronomy and it inspired this song.

My wife and I met in college. After a while we learned that each of our families loved John Denver. My wife and I still listen to him today, although both joyful and sorrowful at the same time.
