John Denver was a singer songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Annie's Song", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns. Home Free does an awesome version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads".

Dude. If I had written this song I’d consider my mission on this earth complete. It’s so well-known and beloved that I’ve heard whole crowds singing it in stadiums at soccer games in Europe by people who probably have no idea of the places he’s singing about! Amazing.

Yep I heard it multiple times stop the first time I've ever heard about it was in 2007 when I was 16 years old I had an older couple that I was friends with they had a copy of of his greatest hits I ended up keeping their CD and became a massive John Denver fan ever since I became even more enamored with him after I found out he met Steve Irwin in person

“Stranger to blue water”….there is only one natural lake in WV, Trout Pond. And it’s less than 2 acres in size, is the meaning of that short verse. Blessings to you and yours from West Virginia 🤠

Catch me if I fall, that can almost sound like a John Denver song itself! It was cool to see you getting really wrapped up in this based on your experience with it to that movie. But yeah I was a little kid when this came out but it became quite rapidly one of those favorite sing-alongs songs that everybody could sing to no matter the setting and everybody knew it. It was that popular everybody knew it all the time. All different ages. One of my favorite memories is when I was about 15 and Hiking through the northeastern New Mexico mountains with a bunch of other guys and it was a hard push sometimes and we ran out of water at one point I remember that. And still, when we were getting down and feeling like it was going to be endless or something, somebody would start sing this song and we would all open throat sing it at the top of our lungs as we walked along up the trail to yet another mountain.

I seen the coolest thing recently on a utube short. A teacher played this in her class. And the young kids started singing it. ( They already knew the song). In 1971, I was 7 years old and yes I knew the song well.

I was 13 years old in 1971 and living in Ireland. The first time I heard this song actually wasn`t the original version by John but the cover by Olivia Newton John which was probably around `72/73 it was only several years later that I discovered the original and superior version.

The West Virginia Hills is the state song, Country Roads is often used in ads etc. In Jr. High we did both in a show with a country redneck theme and we deliberately emphasized our accents. (Something singers normally avoid with our accent) Central WV fyi Elkview. BTW he hits several parts of WV, the blue ridge in the east is part of our boarder with VA and the Shenandoah is just inside our side of the ridge. The confederate army used the valley and ridge to move hidden an do raids on Union forces. WV broke from VA in the civil war and for a short time we had 3 state governments VA, VA in exile and newly formed WV. If you look at a highway map, many rails of the civil war followed the same pattern, making us a major shipping hub.

Are you aware that the "banjar" originated in Africa? When it came here with the Africans, it adapted into the banjo. Learned in my grad program from Maud Wahlman who is expert in the art of quilting, also heavily African influenced, and she also knew a great deal about the African diaspora and its many contributions to other cultures.
