After many viewings of this episode I still notice something new. I never before caught the double meaning of "this must be quite a SHOCK to you, sir." Legendary. Also, I never really gave much thought to asking to make an ice cream soda. I realize Columbo was fishing for a reaction. At first I thought Columbo playing that he had a slow mind and was easily side tracked. He is frequently unconventional to the extent of having no awareness or care about how others might view his actions or appearance. I chalked it up to Columbo being Columbo. But he was sussing out his man. He already knew Alex killed the man. His suspicions were confirmed when he admitted to knowing the victim. When Columbo is dealing with loved ones, he is usually very mindful. But he knew he was guilty. So he made a weird unrelated request to see what he'd do. An innocent man may get worked up and respond "how can you think of soda at a time like this! I just found out a childhood friend of mine was here, maybe to see me, and someone killed him! His killer may still be out there!" But since he's guilty he obliges our lieutenant with his outrageous request because a bomb just got dropped on him and he thinks being agreeable is the way to stay on the detective's good side and keep suspicion off him. Unaware that his non-reaction was carefully and duly noted by Columbo's good eye. Apologies for the length; I just get really excited about this show :)

honestly that's a detective trope I'm not too fond of: people get weird, paradoxical reactions in the face of overwhelming grief, so IRL it'd make just as much sense as an opportunity to get the bad news off his mind for a second, or as literal nonsense b/c logic tends to stop working in these circumstances but I'll give Columbo a pass, he's Columbo

This one was my introduction to Lt. Columbo. It came from my mom, who loved the classic series. I was a kid at the time, so I didn't understand what was going on. I wanted to scream at the lieutenant, tell him "this guy is obviously a murderer!" But I get it now. And I'm the better for it. Thanks, Mom.

Columbo has a remarkable way of getting the attention of his suspects with the most mundane objects and observations. Yet, I've never heard a suspect tell Columbo, "You know whenever you come by, I expect to hear some fascinating observation you've made, but, every time, it turns out to be something boring."

Columbo always had terrific actors for their murderers with subtle cues every time the noose got tighter around their necks. I especially like how Fisher Stevens closed his eyes at 3:44 when his character realizes he cannot pretend that he doesn't know the victim any longer once Columbo shows him the drivers licence.

And in the espisode with José Ferrer as the killer there was a wizkid scientist whose name was similar to Steven Spielberg (what was it, Steve Spedleburg or something?). Seeing the change from the complimentary portrayal of that to Spielberg as killer I wonder if there was any backstage fall-out between super-star director Spielberg and Levinson-Link. Or it might have been just an all fun jab, still the contrast is funny.
