I was in the audience for that performance, which was also broadcast on PBS. Had it on VHS tape all these years, & finally digitized to share with the world!

And there among the tenors is a young Paul Phoenix, one year before joining the King's Singers :) Loved it!

thanks so much for sharing it. Gardiner/ORR's Beethoven has been my favorite, and this is even more vivid and lively. truly an extraordinary performance.

This is definitely the correct performance, it just sounds right. Beethoven knew what he was doing when he had the "too fast" tempos that later directors borked.

Really enjoyed this! Been awhile since I listened to more than just Ode to Joy, so 'twas a revelation and a great live performance! It had me out of my chair wielding the conductor's wand so I had my workout for the day ;) Bravo!

I wish we could hear the whole symphony! His ORR Beethoven symphonies are my favorite 👏 For me the only drawback is that he doesn't do presstissimo at the very end

Eric, THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I was living in the States in those days and happen to watch just a little part of the broadcast on PBS that day. Ever since I've been looking for this video and couldn't find it! This is fantastic!!!!

Thanks for sharing! But you should correct the Info: like the moderator in the end says, the tenor is William Kendall and not Michael Schade.

The "Ode To Joy" seems a little too fast in this recording though Gardiner doesn't seem to over kill it neither.
