Wow i have not heard the name Allison Durban in such a long time. She was born in New Zealand but was Queen of pop in Australia. Her trade mark was her waist long auburn hair and she was beautiful. She is 72, I am feeling so old now lol.. What can I say about John, he is a legend and my hero.

If I remember right, back then we used to have a king and queen of pop every year. 1971 would have been these two. I think they both won the titles a few times back then.

This is 1971 when Johnny Farnham and Allison Durbin were the King and Queen of Pop; as they were the favourite male and female singers that year. John actually was King of Pop from 1969 to 1973. John Farnham was known as Johnny Farnham from 1964 until 1979; his manager(Glenn Wheatley) in 1982 promoted him as John Farnham when he became lead singer of Little River Band.

It was great to see Alison Durban after all these years - a kiwi, one of many New Zealand talents of that era who crossed the Tasman Sea to Australia. There just wasn't enough going on in our little country of 2.5 million back then, to support rising musicians to expand their careers.... Alison, John Stevens, Sharon O'Neill, Jenny Morris, Max Merrit, Mark Williams.... to name just a few. Now with the internet it's much easier...completely different ballgame

they had great chemistry. the song was produced by Allison's then husband Howard Gable who produced many of John's (and Allison's) early hits. Allison went on to have a highly successful career as a country singer in Australia, and we all know what happened to John. Allison retired in the mid 90s for health reasons. She is doing well living a quiet life in Melbourne.

Not sure if you will see this Nick. Really enjoyed this clip and your reaction to this joyful rendition from Johnny and Allison. I was a teen in NZ when Allison won awards then moved over the ditch and had a successful career. Her first song "I Have Loved Me A Man" stood out to me at the time as her being World Class artist (from our little pond). You tube has given me the opportunity to rediscover the Australasian and world artists that influenced me when I was young and enjoy their progress through the decades. If you would like to enjoy Allison's personality and talents more there is a rare clip from Aussie TV that does her justice you might like to watch - Allison Durbin - 1970 Australian TV appearance (RARE). Thank you brother for sharing your musical discoveries. Great artists and music are intergenerational.

John hadn't had the singing lessons then but you can still see that he had 'the voice'. John had a TV show which he hosted with Allison. She was originally from New Zealand. Sadly, the downfall of former Australian 'Queen of Pop' Allison Durbin was made complete with her guilty plea to drug trafficking in a Melbourne court today, 30 May 2007. The 57-year-old, who now goes by her married name Allison Giles, pleaded guilty to trafficking a drug of dependence, cultivating a narcotic plant and theft of electricity. Born on 24th May, 1950, she was 73 as at 24th September, 2023. John was born 1st July 1949, so he's 1 year older than Allison. This video was 1971, so he was 22 and she was 21. For 3 years running (1969, 1970 and 1971), she won Australia's King of Pop Award for (Best Female Artist), commonly called the "Queen of Pop", Allison was never officially the Queen of Pop because they didn't give that title to the best female until the following year. They made an album of duets together called 'Together'.

John had 2 TV shows that he hosted with 2 Queens of Pop. 'It's Magic' 1974 when he was 25 with Colleen Hewett (who starred with him in the stage show 'Pippin' and 6 years later, 'Farnham and Byrne' 1980 hosted with Debbie Byrne (from Young Talent Time 1975). You have shown a clip of John in the TV show Bobby Dazzler. There is also 1 clip I've found of a skit with Colleen on It's Magic. I wish I could find the clip of him singing 'Corner of the Sky' on that show. It demonstrates the 'vocal gymnastics' that John learned from singing lessons. John was accused of over singing but I don't think they meant he sang to strong or loud. I think it referred to these vocal gyrations, which were very skilful and showed how good he was but he totally destroyed the original, beautiful melody. Him singing the original version is recorded on the album of the stage version of Pippin and it's beautiful. You can tell that John got over his newly found enthusiasm for this 'over singing'. Collen was born on 16th April, 1950. Like Alison Durbin that makes Colleen 1 year younger than John. She was Queen of Pop in 1972 and again in 1973. Hits were 'Superstar' 1971, 'Day By Day' 1971, from Godspell and Beatles 'Carry That Weight' 1972. Colleen was in the Australian stage production of Godspell as well as Australian stage production of Pippin 1974 with Johnny Farnham. Debbie Byrne was born 30th March, 1957 and was 23 when she and John hosted Farnham and Byrne (John was 31). She was Queen of Pop in 1974 and again in 1975. She recorded the Crystals' 'He's a Rebel' 1974 and 'Da Doo Ron Ron' 1975. You can view a video of John singing Stevie Wonder's, For Once In My Life, which gives you an idea what I mean by vocal gymnastics but it's mild compared to what he did to the melody of Corner of the Sky. Details under this video read: It's November 1972 and Australia's reigning King of Pop, Johnny Farnham, is in a Melbourne television studio performing the Motown classic For Once in My Life. Gathered around him at the end of the song is a who's who of the Australian pop music scene, including Allison Durbin, Jeff Phillips, Colleen Hewett and Debbie Byrne, along with soon-to-be famous music reviewer Ian 'Molly' Meldrum. It was a sad day for the musicians and production crew: Farnham's performance closed the final episode of Happening 72, a four-hour Saturday morning pop music show that aired nationally on what's now known as Network 10.
