You are so right about singers who over sing the song to showcase how high, powerful or low they can go, instead of just singing it with the appropriate tone and emotion. All the extra twiddle-dee-dee stuff often causes the message of the song to be lost. John Farnham knows when to pull out all the stops vocally, and when to pour on the emotion so it hits the listener in the feels. That is why he is so good!

Hi, Nick. Love how you appreciate and bring out the details about all the facets of such good singing... whether the singer is belting out a song or delivering notes so utterly melodic and silky. John Farnham's incredible capabilities as a singer and showman really impressed Tom Jones, Celine Dion, and several other well-known and respected talents. They tried and tried to persuade John to move to the U.S. so his career would have a better chance to take off for the world-wide stage. John, however, had done some tours that took him away from his wife and kids, and he didn't relish the idea of the increased touring that would be involved. He really struggled being away from his lovely wife Jill (that's what inspired this song... "Burn For You"), and he also didn't want to uproot his family to another country to further his singing career. So he was content to work mostly in Australia, with just a few trips abroad. Can't fault that kind of Love, can you?

I would have only been a child but I remember being mesmerised by his performance. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's as about a beautiful a love song as your ever going to get. His stripped down voice & emotion brings tears to my eyes. Flawless. They're will never be another him. If he didn't get so much flack for too many "last tours" in retirement he'd still be going. Unfortunately I think he loves his farm & quiet life with horses now to ever get another tour. It's been far too long. I'd recommend watching "The Sound Relief Charity Concert with Coldplay & surprise guest our John Farnham singing his most popular song in Australia. It will give you goosebumps & you will see like no other Australian video can how crazy the live audience went here. It gives me goosebumps & Coldplay has said it was one of the most spectacular moments they've ever played.

I love listening to John Farnham’s version of Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar. He’s the best Jesus there ever has been. And the 1992 Australian Cast Studio album is the best JCSS. Mostly because they managed to make it a lot more rocky and dramatic, but a whole lot less cheesy. I’m not a fan of the movie version for that reason. Way too cheesy. But John as Jesus… you just FEEL it, yanno? As for this song, I noticed he cut out a few I’s in the end, and there is a live version where he holds the For for quite some time. It’s gorgeous. This is beautiful, but I think he did a better job on the other one. Not that there is such a thing as a bad song or concert from John. It does not exist.
@moniquem7833 жыл бұрын
Yes! Love Gethsemane! I was lucky enough to go to JCSS twice. The first time we were in the first row of seats other than the ones on the floor right around the stage. Perfect seats. On eye level, could see everything and the spot where he was crucified was right in front of us. Awesome. The next time we were way way way up the back. So far back someone scared of heights would have a problem. Could barely make out who was who lol. And it was still awesome 😂😂

@@moniquem783 so jealous that you went! I was five at the time, didn’t get to go, for obvious reasons. But my parents did buy the cassette tape, and later the CD, when it came out, so I did grow up with that version. I first saw the 70s movie version as a teen and I really did not like it! It was so cheesy! And much less rocky. So different. And I just couldn’t FEEL the story the way I do with the 1992 Aussie version. I think that emoting is probably one of John’s greatest attributes. His voice is technically wonderful, but it’s his ability to make everyone feel the song that makes him the best, imo.

@@katherinemorelle7115 I was about 15 at the time. The first time I went with Mum and Dad, and then the second time was with a couple of my sisters friends who were a bit older than me and so could drive up. The first time was with John Waters as Pilate, and for the second time he’d gotten sick and I’ve forgotten the name of the guy who replaced him which is really annoying me right now! 😂😂 btw, I just searched Jesus Christ Superstar here on KZbin and the whole thing is on here. My parents had the 70’s version on record and I had the CD of the new one so I made a tape filling in the gaps in the story with the old songs. It was a little weird lol. Especially Caiaphas as the 70’s guy was really high pitched and kinda squeaky and the 92 guy was really deep lol. I was lucky enough to go to many of his concerts. Chain Reaction was my first when I was 13, and from then on I went to all the major solo tours (I went to The Main Event, but not the later ones with other artists) only missing one because the friend who was supposed to buy the tickets spent the money on drugs and lied to me for months. Mum started coming with me after that debacle and it became a thing we really enjoyed doing together. Last one we went to was the 25th anniversary of Whispering Jack. That one was really special as he also told stories so you got to know him a bit more too. I’m not sure if we would go now if he toured again. I have a lot of issues with my ears now so I probably couldn’t cope with the volume of a concert now. It would probably be worth a couple of weeks of ear pain though!

One of my all time Favorites from John Farnham as it really cuts so deep when one is really feeling down etc. He is a Master Singer a real Fair Dinkum Aussie Legend. Thanks so much for posting this and giving your love to it :-).

That song was for his wife, Jilly. Who, by the way he married when he was 21 and she was 16. 50 years later, still married and in love.

I agree with all that you say about this wonderful man! He makes you have all the feels, and it is a treat to listen to him:) I did say this before, and I am sorry to be a nag, but John Farnham singing Amazing Grace with Venetta Fields(Venetta is the one that owns this song in the version they do:)) is truly something. Even if you don't do a reaction, I would highly recommend you listen to it for the pure enjoyment:) Thank you again for a terrific video. It is fun to watch you enjoy your music as much as you do:)

Along with what everyone else has said, when he sings ACDC, Long way to the top as the final song of his concert, it rocks! Absolutely the goat!! I'd love for him and Barnsey to do another duet!!!! ❤❤❤

He’s the worlds best singer. One of a kind and let the World pray for him 🙏🏻 right now to heal him from his cancer 😢

I guess you have probably heard by now that John has had major surgery for cancer this week. Apparently the tumour was in his mouth and he has had part of his jaw removed. This was headline news in Australia, where he is so loved. Sadly this probably means very bad news for him ever singing again. Everyone is wishing him a full and speedy recovery. Get well soon John.

Your reactions are always fun to see and hear. It's interesting how Farnham's vocal acrobatics add to the emotion and the meaning of the words in this (brilliant) song. They are subtle and not just decorations to show off his vocal ability. This song actually brought tears to my eyes. His vocal cords are coated in gold.

Let’s not forget the band including backing singers - vanetta fields (check her history !!!!), Lindsay Field and Lisa Edwards - all great vocalists - seriously

Nick I knew you were going to love his falsetto "I" - I was waiting for that reaction from you!! This song still gives me shivers, still, after growing up with John Farnham & it is one of the most romantic songs, ever, period.

This was a great love song, as mentioned already, written for his wife while he was away touring. Some trivia, he briefly led the Little River Band after Glenn Shorrock left and did 2 numbers that you might enjoy, one of them a remake of the old Easybeats song "St Louis" which you might be able to relate to as well as another song I enjoyed called "Down on the Border" where his vocal ranges you enjoy so much are well & truly on display.

Thank you so much for this enjoyable reaction of our nation’s vocal treasure. I also love the way you break down the elements of his voice and content of the song. I also totally agree with you about Jennifer Hudson, I’ve been saying it for years. She has a great voice but we don’t always need to be assaulted by it. Thanks again, I’ll continue watching for more Farnham reactions! ❤️🔥

I just spent the last couple of hours watching you……keep it up. Luv your passion. What Aussie’s like me enjoy is when the rest of the world work out how great some of our talent is.

I saw John Farnham in concert once at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, a venue which could hold 12,000 people. The place was full and yet... Farnham's rapport with the audience was so strong I felt like I had wandered into a backyard barbecue with a few close friends and he was there singing just for us. He gave us all a very warm and intimate concert experience- very hard for an entertainer to achieve in a crowd of 12,000!
