It will be a cold day in hell before anyone can ever convince me there is a greater rendition of this song by anyone ever! I saw this production twice and was at this performance of the final night in Sydney. The entire cast were absoutely perfect and the muscial production put together by David Hirschfelder is one of the most magnificent productions ever of Jesus Christ Superstar.

I couldn't agree with you more. I don't have anything to compare it to. But John absolutely murdered this, pardon the pun. Thank you so much my good friend!!! Also, I'm glad you got to see this twice as me and Greg, A, K, A, O, G, L, we'll be going to see Tool and meeting each other for the first time on the 21st of January. That will be three days after my birthday. 45 years old.

They've already reacted to this - check out their back catalogue. It's hilarious. Danny fell under the spell of Kate's undeniable charms, and took an instant dislike to Jon Stevens/Judas cos he was being mean to Farnsey/Jesus.

Fantastic reaction! You did JC Superstar, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and of course John himself proud. This production is a bit different from the original in that it's in a concert arena format instead of a stage play setting. They've given themselves creative licence to give it a fresh look and crank up the metal vibe. The music was arranged by David Hirschfelder, John's keyboard player and music arranger (the one with the long mane of hair) but I don't know the other band members. Another familiar face from John's lineup is Lyndsay Fields, "the bloody hippy", singing in the chorus. The 1992 production has been remastered to the standard of Gethsemane, but not all of the individual clips have been. The Jon Stevens clip of Heaven on Their Minds I sent you is remastered - it's the first song in the production, right before Everything's Alright, which you've covered as the cast performance on Hey Hey It's Saturday. That's when you took a dislike to Jon/Judas cos he was very mean to John/Jesus. And I'm afraid Heaven on Their Minds isn't going to make you like him any better.😂 There are several show stoppers in this rock opera, so I'll look through them for any others that have been remastered. As I said, the entire production has been remastered, and I can think of worse ways to spend an evening with your feet up and tipple of choice in your hand. Here's the link.

It was amazing to be at this production. John's voice IRL in this was jaw-dropping, especially the rasp in the high registers really emoting the pain of the message. There was just this moment of tangible silence after the final note, no one wanted to break it, but also didn’t want the performers to think their work wasn’t fantastic. It was a while ago lol, but I don’t remember any fuss over this from the churches, maybe Aussies just don’t hassle things so much.

Wow, you were there, I am so envious. Yeah, I think OGL/ Greg is referring to when this was first released back in the 70s. And I think maybe one other time. But no, I don't think he's at all talking about any blowback from Australia, ain't no way. lol We know how OZ is, if it ain't none of their business, they don't give a damn how anyone else perceives things, they think for their self. I just watched this again on my laptop instead of my dinky phone, and was able to watch your faces in real time as the performance unfolded - Greg's a quiet study of concentration, Danny's one of unfettered exuberance. Thank you for having another crack at this, and I think the background to this reaction makes it all the more special. I'm glad I nagged - you have my single-minded autism to thank for that!😸 The era of the rock opera from late 60's onwards is a goldmine of outstanding music and it's a shame that they're not better known. The fact that so many of Andrew Lloyd Webber's productions are still being played around the world is a testament to their timelessness. By reacting to the songs you're introducing these masterpieces to a new generation. I'll line up some songs for you, maybe in their correct order. But a couple of standouts are "I Don't Know How To Love Him" and "Superstar", both of which were massive hits in their own right. After sleuthing through the Oz production, some songs have a video clip, some are only audio. Is audio ok?

@@oglschmitt I just looked it up: a 35 year, 13,981 performance run. That record will stand for a long time. I saw Phantom 3 times and JC 3 times (including the 1992 production). I was privileged to be around for the prolific works of Rodgers and Hammerstein, the later blockbusters like Fiddler On The Roof (still one of my favourite musicals), and then the decades when Rock Opera was king. My life has been a musical smorgasbord.

It is often referred to as 'The Agony In The Garden' because Jesus had all the insecurities of a 'man' he became overwhelmed with emotions and asked that 'this cup of poison be taken away'...but then he knows that it's God's will that he dies as the man and will be raised up on the 3rd day. John'a performance in this is nothing short of brilliant....The emotion, the agony he portrays is pulpable. At the end the audience is struck dumb...not a sound can be heard...one can feel John's sadness and those last words.... 'Take me now, before I change my mind'..... Thanks so much guys for this reaction.

I have known the JC Superstar "rock opera" musical since I bought the original record back in 1972. I believe this song and the part of JC was specifically written for the original singer, Ian Gillan, the lead singer from Deep Purple. He is one of heavy metal's most famous screamers and his rendition of this song is simply unmatched. However, his version was performed in a studio and he never performed it live on stage as far as I know, as he went back to touring with Deep Purple soon after he recorded it. So I believe this live performance by John after a long season is certainly very impressive. There are a lot of good songs in the show, and I think you have seen the song by Kate Ceberano and John and Jon Stevens which occurs before Gethsemane and when Judas (played by Jon Stevens) decides to turn JC in to the Pharisees. You might be interested to know that Tim Minchin also played the role of Judas in a later 2012 production of JC Superstar and I think he does a great job. I think there is a YT video of him singing "Heaven on Their Minds" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a523qKCBlMSHetE.

This was about the 4th or 5th major Aussie production of Superstar. The first was in the 1970's with Chuck McKinney as Judas, a very different Judas to all the others and the best in my opinion. The 2nd production was either late 1970's or early 1980's and featured the brilliant vocalist Doug Parkinson as Judas......great jazz / rock voice but maybe not the actor that Chuck is or was. Then of course your adopted Aussie love child, Jon Stevens , as Judas in this production. lol
