Picking a best performance is impossible, just when you say that’s the one, he’ll come along and blow you away with the next one. What you see is what you get 💯 percent every time, when John is interviewed he always says I love my job and it shows. His love and loyalty to his fans is unbelievable and to this country as well. John leaves everyone with that feeling and it starts from the first lyric. I think today reality has set in to why we feel the way we do to this legend

The original version was from col chisel, written by the drummer Steve Preseitch. This song is about childhood abuse, seperating from it, growing up and trying to escape it. Then when the memories hit, they hit hard. Steve ended his life, so shout out to all the survivors of childhood emotional/physical/sexual abuse - not all of us make it through

Watch his version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters from the Steve Visard show in 1979, John was absolutely broke at this stage in his life to the point he'd lost the house and cars, couldn't even afford to take the kids to MacDonald's, he was absolute poison to radio stations due to crap management ( he'd basically become a cabaret singer who couldn't fill a pub) but people knew how good he was and he got fantastic management and joined LRB in the early 80's leading to him growing up and doing Whispering Jack in 86, the rest is history.

I read that someone has already mentioned Vanetta Fields and Lindsay Field ( no relation and different spelling) the 2 back up singers here. Seems all of Johns back up singers and musicians stayed loyal to him for many many years. Vanetta had her own career in the USA as well as demand in England and Europe , but always made herself available whenever John was touring in Australia.

I'm very late to this video but I just have to say I personally think the jesus comparison is on point. John is actually a really important cultural figure for Australia and he kinda did die professionally and then came back as this kind of divine persona in the mid 80s that somehow embodied how Australia wanted to see itself. He means a lot to a lot of people.

Best performance … every performance. My go to re-listen is is version of the Beatles song HELP LIVE with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, but I love everything he has done. I can remember Sammy Davis Jnr urging him to go to the States and the admiration of many World superstar performers who have collaborated with him. Others may have also mentioned that he was approached by Queen to front them after Freddie passed away, but if not, he was their first choice but preferred to go solo after his stint with Little River Band.

You are right about John’s talent - consistently first class performances live - for decades! Not a concert here and there but concert after concert across certainly the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s. You are clearly a fan, so now you’ve seen this version, try watching John’s performance of this song in the 2003 The Last Time concert when John was 54 years old. The guitar solo in that version by Brett Garsed is superior also, I think. Some of the videos you watch of John are actually encores following 2 hour performances. He loves it and we love what he does and who he is. Anything from the Main Event concerts with Olivia Newton-John and Andrew Warlow is brilliant. Nothing John does isn’t brilliant. You’ll also start to notice John’s use of the microphone for both the singing and the acrobatics he incorporates (throwing it around the stage). Plenty still to see and hear.

There is a better version of this song IMHO. The '2003 The Last Time' concert version gives a great demonstration that even in his 50s (at the time), he still had 'that voice' and could still belt it out like the best of them. I'm sure you'll definitely get to the songs he did when he got older to confirm his 'other worldly' he really is.

There are so many good ones. If you want to stay on the ballads, “When something is wrong with my baby” with Jimmy Barns is awesome. Before the Aussie invasion in subscribing your Channel, have there been comments from your original subscribers about John Farnham, just interested. Totally enjoyed both videos today. Having seen the original Jesus Christ Superstar (twice), I prefer the music in the original to second version of Jesus Christ Superstar. You have now seen John in concert, in a stage show, do a duet with Jimmy Barnes, one common thing he has when he performs with others is the chemistry that is created as seen with Jimmy Barnes. He performed in concert with the late Olivia Newton-John and Aussie opera and stage performer Anthony Warlow who played Phantom in the Aust. version of Phantom of the Opera. The concert was called Main Event in 1996. John performs with Anthony singing 'Granada' but with some comedy and humour thrown in. He performs with Olivia singing 'Please Don't Ask me', and that is when the chemistry shines as they have the love and respect of each other.

...and in 6 months, you will still be gushing. "Angels" is required viewing for his goofy/comedic side, "Grenada" with Anthony Warlow similarly, and ANY interview will show you exactly the kind of normal, unaffected, average guy he is. Then, you'll no doubt catch an episode of Bobby Dazzler, a sitcom he starred in. Duets with Celine Dion, Tom Jones (entire concerts with him), Olivia, Human Nature, the '67 black and white version of Sadie, We will rock you with Queen (post Freddie), You're the Voice with Coldplay, it just keeps going... Then there's the seemingly bottomless barrel of other Australian acts that will be recommended to you, both current and former. We get the best of the American music industry (and a LOT of its worst too), but you don't get more than 10% of our best. so much for you to discover.

OK, so now I have a marker - the first time you say you are finished I now know is the halfway point 🤣. The next song in this concert (where is invites Venetta Fields and Lindsay Field to the stage) is Amazing Grace. First verse Venetta solo (very slow), 2nd verse John solo, both a cappella, then together with Lindsay and piano accompaniment. Builds the whole way through. Magical. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJXEn3-heK-ifKs).
@CaptainsChannel582 жыл бұрын
Finally! Someone reacting to the best version of this song! and not the inferior 2003 version.. Three reasons why this is better than the 2003 version. 1) I really dislike his slow phrasing in 2003 which he did more and more as he got older. This version is much more 'on time'. 2) Garsed nails the guitar harmonic here perfectly at 4.05, in 2003 he does something different and its nowhere near as good as this. 3) Farnham nails the slide around that high note at 4.47 which he does not do in 2003. THIS is the superior version.
@magpiegirl37832 жыл бұрын
No need to labour the point - everything John sings is fantastic and of course they are all a bit different because they are live. The 2003 version for me is better but it doesn’t matter because everything he does is gold.
