This is the coolest channel on KZbin. John’s lyrics are so deep it takes years for them to fully integrate in your psyche. I’ve been listening to his solo stuff for 15+years and I’m still learning new things from his lyrics

Thanks! That's a great point. I've been listening since DC EP but didn't really think the lyrics were anything more than art for arts sake. But that gradually changed. For the past 5 years I've been listening to nothing but John while trying to absorb as much as I could. There are still many lyrics that I haven't completely wrapped my brain around. Glad you enjoyed! P.S. I checked out some of your Frusciante covers, nice work!

Im so grateful to have found your channel and your videos. When i found johns music+philosopies i was very very isolated. I didnt think there were many others out there who lit up like i did when listening to this stuff. A lot of people are fans of his music or rhcp but they write off his writing and his philosophies. Not many people can open up to understanding (or trying to understand) these notions. Its beautiful to see and hear of everyone in the comments and you with this video, truly analysing and leaning into what he's been saying. He's my biggest inspiration. Listening to him and his music, hearing his life story and his thoughts, on many levels, saved me. So much love and appreciation to you and everyone in the comments. ❤

Thanks for this comment, I feel the same isolation sometimes. I think there is so much to discover about John's work. It's a shame that he still mostly thought of as a "top 10 guitarist" or what gear he uses. Its nice to know there are others who appreciate the deeper aspects of his work. Thanks!

When I was 13, I discovered John's solo work through RHCP. I fell in love with the authenticity and the music. I didn't understand his lyrics - due to the fact that I was not a native speaker of English, but they also seemed very strange, contradictory and complicated to me). I forgot about John's work for several years (that is, I didn't listen to his music or think about him at all). Fast forward to when I'm 30 - lately I've been very interested in psychology, discovering the Self and Jung's model. I'm also going to therapy with a therapist who specializes in Jungian psychoanalysis. And yesterday, out of nowhere, I thought: “let's go back to John's works for inspiration, you loved him so much growing up” (btw. I'm a musician and John is the main reason I am one). I lay in my room listening to “Smile From The Streets You Hold” and cried like a baby for probably too long. And THEN today this video appeared. I can't explain it, but I feel like the universe is telling me something. My subconscious is connecting the dots or something. I don't know. Thank you for this. BTW, I'm waiting for more interpretations of his work, especially Enclosure, PBX, because I'm too dumb to understand those lyrics. Keep it up!!!

Sounds like synchronicity to me :) Thanks for the comment! I'll get to PBX and Enclosure eventually. My next one will feature a lyric from Letur-Lefr.

I also think, less tangibly, you can hear this in the music itself. I think John has tried to communicate this in multiple interviews, stating he doesn’t feel responsible for the music he puts out, and attributes it to a higher force that he is tapping into. But his devotion to this ‘creative force’ seems entirely religious to me. It’s nice to hear someone thinks the same way :)

This is so true, and I would have loved to cover the musical aspects, too. But that's a little out of my reach right now. Maybe some day :)

@@mirrorsarewater well yeah I think the problem there is it is literally intangible - it’s something that can’t be put into words objectively. Thats why music exists. It’s the same as not being able to describe why you connect with certain people - you just feel it. Kierkegaard talks a lot about the objective vs subjective experience - might be some overlap there.

Also I think you should do specific expositions on John's lyrics for particular songs, relating it to psychological theory. Again thank you, look forward to your future posts! I love this channel so much. Thank you for making these videos. John’s lyrics have helped me so much over the last 15 years I’ve listened to him. I wonder if you’ll talk about his song Excuses from Enclosure. It’s his last song (to date) with lyrics on them (besides Foregrow, but supposedly that was recorded before). He talks so much in that song about duality and up and down and ascending and descending. And I have always thought it was his last song for a reason. Like finally said all the things he needed to across his records. So he stopped writing lyrics. The ending of that song really sounds like a conclusion to a lot of growth

Thanks! That's a great insight. I feel like the lyrics on PBX, Letur, and Enclosure share that feeling. Like he's throwing it all out there and has nothing left to say at this time. I have looked at those lyrics, but mostly for reference for what I'm working on now. I hope to cover most of his songs at some point. Really great lyrics hidden in his electronic stuff :)

Man, thank you so much. Frusciante is my main musical influence and also an inspiration. I have listened to all his work and I go back to it from time to time. You brought to consciousness all the things I was skipping over and wondering about. I feel like I understood the meaning behind it emotionally, but I could never fully understand what he was pointing to. I hope you continue to dig deeper with each new video. Nothing but praise.

You mean to say unconsciousness who is still unconscious?
@mirrorsarewater
@mirrorsarewater 6 ай бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I use the Jungian term unconscious to describe parts of our psyche that we don't have direct knowledge of. It may be causing confusion because the term unconscious can imply a lacking of consciousness, like a table or a rock. However, animals are considered conscious beings, but, they're not meta-conscious like us. In this video, when I use the term unconscious, I'm pointing to the consciousness that is not able to reflect on experience but is subjugated to experience in itself. I'm not sure if this helps. Bernardo Kastrup is a great resource if you want to get more info on Jung.
