OHM is great, dark, heavy, experimental record. It was unique. The thing is your ego bro is bigger than the Eiffel Tower. That's why I love Josh and his contribution in the band. He did well bringing old songs and deep cuts. With John is just playing the greatest hits and thats it.

One Hot Minute is a great contender for significantly underrated albums buy a certain artist. It may not be their best, however it's a completely unique, satisfying listen which stirred the pot a little and made their career that much more colourful.

Well, it still sold 7 million copies and at least My Friends and Aeroplane are still pretty memorable songs off it, so it probably got exactly the appreciation it deserved. "Warped" went well outside their ballpark, somewhere between the grunge/alternative feel of the 90's and a bit of classic rock, so no surprise it threw off fans back in the days. When you look at it 25 years later, its a different thing.... Dave Navarro threw in some interesting guitar work you'd never hear from John (what makes it interesting) and it indeed was all talented musicians involved, but I personally wouldn't say it is a masterpiece...

@@perrofrio It's no bad record and unlike their early funk stuff, I can still enjoy it in one go every time, it's .... just different. I'm not as much of an expert that I could tell exactly what's different but Dave is coming from a different place in terms of guitar style and you can hear that all over the place, even though many trademarks are there... riffs are harder and the songs have a more traditional rock feel, which probably makes sense with Navarro's background. Perhaps, their years with him left an impression because "Tearjerker" could easily be featured on "By the way".

John made it clear that Janes was his favorite band. He also made it clear that Dave’s style was perfect for Janes, but didn’t mesh as well with the RHCP. That’s why supergroups typically don’t work. Bands requires chemistry. And while OHM is good, it’s essentially a spin-off of the RHCP’s. Agree with John 100%.

I love Frusciante obviously, but this is why Josh was, and always will be golden for me. He just cared so much about their fans and he brought back so many good songs that people desperately wanted to hear, but John just never played them. And if anybody thinks that Josh didnt fit, this is the proof that he did. He carried the band so hard for 10+ years while John was out again, bringing back great old songs and satisfied a lot of fans from various eras of RHCP. He just took your hand and walked with you through the park of all RHCP albums and you could just watch and enjoy all of the highlight peaks of the band during one single show.

One Hot Minute was the second album by the band that I listened to (right after Blood Sugar Sex Magik), and remains my favourite. It's a tremendously interesting album. Colliding psychedelic elements with metal, funk and basic rock works sooo well, and a lot of that is owed to Dave joining the band and helping with the stew of ideas. I understand a lot of fans, and maybe the members themselves with their dismissal of the album, especially when you consider the albums succeeding it are much more in the roots of the band (as well as being much more commercially accessible), but it's still such a great album. The songs take one to a place that the band had never (and maybe will never) take one too, each with a unique enviroment. Thanks for the video b!

I completely agree and understand you. OHM was their last album with attitude. With Californication (since this album) they became so "artificial", no real attitude, a commercial poppy funky rock band even little girls started to listen to. A lot of people that started to listen to them because of Californication album don’t even really like their previous albums. The "essence" of RHCP completely changed with Californication...I can understand it appeals to a major amount of people in general (their best selling album) but it’s also such a flat and boring album as a whole compared to the previous ones (at least for me), nothing happens. With the album By The Way (horrible album for me) they re-confirmed me they are not the RHCP they used to be and I completely lost my interest in their music ever since. When I listen to RHCP I listen to the albums till OHM included, the rest is not for me.

@CatJolie 11 ай бұрын
@@_TheDarkHalf I didn't say they "fired" him but John didn't leave them either. Although that was the agreed upon official reason for their split, it was much more complicated than that. Facilitated by bad business advice, and manipulated by a deep betrayal, the shortsighted decision was made not to wait for him. That's a very different thing. John will always be the driving, musically creative force in the band, something that time proved to be a regretful truth, especially for Flea. If John had really left them high & dry a second time to just do his own thing they wouldn't have wanted him to come back at all, never mind trusted him enough to risk dropping Klinghoffer like a hot potato the way they did after ten years. There's a reason why John never spoke to Josh again after a decade of collaborative best friendship. There's a reason why the band's reunion was so emotional. Neither tracks with John "quitting".

I adore John, as both a person and as a musician, and he will always be THE guitar player for RHCP to me. But I just cannot understand the hate for One Hot Minute. It's a masterpiece musically, and the hate for it is so undeserved. Hearing them do a darker, heavier, moodier, borderline concept album was amazing to me. It was fresh, but still had the RHCP charm. It invokes entirely different feelings than their other albums, but if you wrap your head around it, it's incredibly powerful stuff. Such a shame that people lampoon it over the lineup or because it's different. It's like hearing an alternative universe where they were a grunge-funk band. It's so unique and evocative. I have much love for Dave’s work on One Hot Minute & I saw him perform with the Chili’s. He was phenomenal & brought his A game. That aside John is my favourite guitarist in terms of song writing ability and tone choices. If the price of him being back in the band writing & performing new material is never hearing songs from that one album live ever again, then it’s a price I’d gladly pay.

I can understand you but for me the RHCP changed (in their "essence" ) for the worse with Californication album on. OHM was their last album with attitude. Then they started to make way too commercial radio friendly POPPY funky rock songs even little girls started to listen to. Californication (their best selling album) made them big for real but they sound so artificial and boring to me, not the RHCP I used to like. BTW and later albums are even way worse.

Dave was the most technical guitarist the band had, no doubt about that, but John's the one who was born to play with them. It doesn't change the fact that OHM is an amazing album! Imo one of the best albums they released. It's a shame they don't play it because John doesn't like.

Love what he did on BSSM. They couldn’t have gotten a better guitar player, he was a man on fire at the time. But, IMO it’s the only thing he did that was truly great. When he came back he lost something vital to his ability to be truly inspired. Regardless of how he and band have publicly shit on Dave and OHM, the music doesn’t lie, the album sales don’t lie. “They’d be perfectly fine if they never did that record”? What a bunch of bullshit lol. They’d be fine with not recording an album that sold over 2 million copies, went multi platinum, and out charted BSSM in every country except the US? Most bands dream of doing that just once in a lifetime. The fact of matter is they hired the perfect guy at the perfect time, and wrote some of the greatest songs of their entire career. The perfect follow up to BSSM, and I know they would’ve made another fantastic album if they didn’t fire Dave and let him clean up for 3 months. “Circle of the Noose is proof of that”. Jealousy and bitterness never look good on anyone, least of all someone like John who left the band of his own volition and thought they’d be lost without him. You know Chad and Flea are dying to play Warped and My Friends live again, and the crowd would lose their shit . Smh damn shame

One Hot Minute is an amazing piece of (in my mind) "post-progressive" rock music, with a serious hint of 90’s grunge and typical RHCP funk infused. Those may not be the official categories to describe it, and I may have left out a lot - but that’s just how I would describe it if you asked me out of the blue.. If you’re not really into that kinda music, but listen to it anyways, you’ll probably like Aeroplane, My Friends, and perhaps even Walkabout - but the rest would probably feel weird, unRHCP and kinda foreign to you. This is how I felt when I first heard the album a while back, but I have since learnt a couple things about it as my taste has expanded, etc. The thing about this album is that, unlike any other RHCP album (and I mean no disrespect to RHCP - I’m a huge fan), you really need to listen to this particular album from front to back, and in one sitting. The way each song blends into the next one, the way it keeps a recurring theme through each side (if you think of it in vinyl terms), and the way it goes from happy to sad to angry and all over again.. it really is a thing of beauty. I love John, and his views on OHM (in terms of these clips) used to make me not want to listen to the album - but I’ve since realized that RHCP is not just John, and (even if just considered in isolation from BSSM and Californication) this album is amazing. I really hope that John is willing to play one or two songs from OHM, as well as from the Josh era, during the upcoming shows. He may be an incredible guitarist, and an integral part of the band - but (just like the other guitarists took the effort to play his stuff, even if they had little choice because of how popular his stuff is), he should try to honour their contributions too. Even just once or twice.

@@_evill.d I really don't think that could happen. John has always been very special about anything other than the music he created with them and Slovak. I think it's bullshit not to play songs just because you don't identify with them, which seems to me to be a lack of respect towards the musician who replaced you with a band that you left at the moment when they were better and that given the specific way of playing that your bandmates might have had to abandon their dreams, it seems to me twice as disrespectful as the rest to have allowed, not playing for example Airplane or my friends that surely many fans wanted to have heard live between 99-2007 I wonder, and this is more rhetorical than asking itself, what will happen to the successes the band had with Josh, because now it's not just one album, it's 2!!! and The getaway for example has more than 300 million views on youtube. I guess the same thing will happen as in OHM sadly, I think John's ego has always been a virtue and a defect at the same time.
