I have to admit what you are saying about the CE 1 is spot on and your tone does sound very legit and pretty much the same as Frusciantes! Amazing tone. As other channels on KZbin have shown you can get a tone very similar to Frusciantes not using a rare boss CE1 but this way you have done it sounds the best to me and is as close as you can get I reckon

I still think the tone isn't necessarily in the gear that you are using. Its more in your fingers and how you dial in what you have. The sound isn't unique to a certain pedal, although it is pretty unique to that amp however. The Silver Jubilee is a fairly unique sounding marshall amp
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
That's true, but don't forget that he was using also a Marshall Major together with the silver Jubilee, which makes a huge difference. In my opinion tecnique is 60% and gear 40%, because with gear but without tecnique you can't get a good sound at all... but with tecnique, and not all the expensive gear you can come close! Anyway, I started using cheap amps, and all that I can say is that although now I use a Silver Jubilee it is not so important. You can get a good sound even with cheap solid state Marshall amps! Pay attention, if you search for the exact same John tone you will have to learn his tecnique and buy almost all his key gear obviously.. but if you search for a good sound close to John, probably the ce1 is even more important than his amps because as you can hear all my crunch comes from my ce1. My Jubilee is pretty much clean!

Lowering the impedance can be of benefit as Impedance describes the 'Current Limiting Factor. At low impedance there is a chance that the 'Waveform Distortion' is minimized which in your case has worked perfectly. It has been observed in several microphone preamps, that lowering the impedance will render a warmer and fuller tone, while increasing the impedance gives you a dynamically tighter bass response thereby shifting the frequency balance in a manner that makes the source material appear brighter. But I would stay away from generalizations that lowering the impedance to always yield better results as it depends on the environment, the resistance and the presence or existence of a buffer within the signal chain. The moment a buffer is engaged the sound quality is likely to diminish rapidly. Thank you for the demonstration !
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Actually the pedal lowers the impedance in HIGH mode, and in LOW mode it takes whatever impedance you are going in! Thanks for your comment and analysis.
@RorysIrishTour7 жыл бұрын
you want low output impedance and high input impedance for a maximum signal level and less treble rolloff. fuzzface and wah may be an exception. What you say about buffers is simply not true.
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Buffers take an high impedance input and give a low impedance input. They usually don't alter the tone so much. In this case, the HIGH mode has a built in buffer that can be engaged / disengaged. It was meant to be useful for this pedal in order to let you use it with any kind of instrument. With guitar, engaging the buffer, you have less signal loss. With the extra signal strength you can get a more distorted sound out of it. That's it!
@RorysIrishTour7 жыл бұрын
I wanted to reply to Fiasco, shouldve made that clearer. In reality a well designed buffer should enhance the signal giving a low impedance output, so that lenghty cables (= capacity which forms a low pass filter in conjunction with output resistance/impedance and cable impedance) and heavy load can be driven far more easily. Badly designed buffers and buffered bypasses (pretty rare these days, WH10 is an example) can have a gain less then 1 and too much input capacitance on their own though, they do "suck tone" then.

I think he got the same crunchy tones from some of the moogerfoogers not being completely bypassed as well, but I love how you noticed this very unique detail in his tone. Awesome video and awesome rig!
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your opinion G.E. ! I don't think that Moogs affect tone. They only have control over gain, and he probably set them matching his standard "level" signal. I study schematics, and this result is only attainable with the particular recovery stage from the Ce-1. Moogs only have a bland control over gain, but signal passes really crispy and clean! (The same thing is for the Pds-1002, not true bypass, but it isn't really a key to his sound and has "level" controls as well!)

great video! i find the way the preamp colors the tone is really important, and can make a fender-style amp which i prefer sound like frusciante. even using a totally non-frusciante amp like, a 5 watt fender.. it will impart some of that character onto the tone. however i've definitely been disappointed with its ability to control volume, it really doesn't, acts more like a boost, than a compressor. and the clipping can be... a little wonky. sounds good blended with a nice amp crunch but on its own... not my favorite clipping sound, and not very frusciante to my ears. i think he mostly had it just coloring his tone! anyway great video very helpful. it's also subtle so you can play other styles and it's not noticeable that you're using that preamp

It's a great pleasure to greet you, I always watch your videos and they have helped me a lot... I have a question if you can help me... I have a Boss Ce1, it works excellent in stereo... BUT I feel that when using it in mono, and I turn on a distortion pedal (Boss Ds2) it loses a bit of punch or presence to the distortion... let me explain better... if I'm using the Boss ds2 and I turn on the Boss Ce1, it seems that certain frequencies are cancelled, and it sounds a bit less "strong"... in clean it is not noticeable, but when I turn on an overdrive pedal before the chorus this problem happens... this only happens when I use it in Mono... when using it in Stereo it does not happen and the sound It's huge since it's easy to handle by mixing the volume of the 2 amps... Has something like this happened to you when using the chorus in mono? I have tried to look for information on the internet, but I have not found... I have a Boss ce2 that only has mono output, and unlike the ce1, with distortion it sounds even louder (boosts the mids). I will be attentive any help... greetings from Chile

I was thinking more about if you wanted fuzz after Chorus. That's where the pot mod makes sense. Depends what works in your rig I guess and you could always put the Chorus and buffer on a separate loop
@WillGalluccio6 жыл бұрын
Not even this makes sense because if you have buffer->chorus->fuzz then the fuzz is going to see chorus' impedance (since the CE-1 is not true bypass) and having the buffer or not in the chain makes no difference (it just helps you and allows you to keep your pedal stock without any mod). As you may understand, I really don't like that mod which started to float around just to let pedal modders and builders raise some pennies out of nowhere

@kawligaforehand20297 жыл бұрын
My setup goes from my strat, into a tuner into a crybaby, then it goes to my big muff and ds2, and then my micro amp and reverb. Amp is Marshall of course but the issue I've run into is that with the wh10 replacing the crybaby, it compresses the sound heavily, and when used increases the volume by tremendous amounts. It never has happened with the crybaby and I'm not sure how to fix it
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Try using your pedals in this order: Guitar -> Ds2 -> Big Muff -> Micro Amp -> Wh10 -> reverb This should be the exact order John would use those pedals. If you have a transistor amp, wh10 boost could possibly still be there. If this chain change doesn't solve your problem, try setting the wh10's depth at 5-6. If this still doesn't solve the issue, you should get it modified with True Bypass and Volume mod. I also sell this mods on Reverb... I am from Italy.

Hi Will - great video, probably watched it 5x and love the tone each time! Quick question - I have a Silver Jubilee (reissue) amp and cabinet (B Cabinet) and I have the DS-2 as my first pedal in the chain. I notice when I pull the Input Gain knob out to engage the rhythm clip, I get a nice lightly overdriven sound (almost light crunch). But when I engage the DS-2, the pedal sounds like shit. If I push the Input Gain knob back in, I go back to the clean sound and the DS-2 sounds awesome. Why do you think that is? Unfortunately, I don't have the CE-1 pedal in my chain but have the Boss SuperChorus instead - still thinking about purchasing your crunch pedal! Thanks Will!
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Back in the day when I first bought my Jubilee I experienced your exact same issue. When Rythm Clip is engaged, the DS-2 sounds like filtered... anyway, as shit! I was curious about this because I could get a great crunchy tone with the Rythm Clip engaged, but then my hole pedalboard would sound like shit... So I went on the clean channel, even if it wasn't crunchy at all. Then I bought the CE-1... I bought it as chorus and I ended up loving it more for its "side effect". Bypassed it compresses the signal and lightly overdrives it! All of my lifetime frusciante-sound problems were solved with it. Nowdays, even if I wouldn't need a chorus, I would bring it around for it's overdriven tone... I can't play without it anymore honestly.

@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I don't have/use a compressor pedal on my board. It is not necessary since you need to get compression by "crunching" your sound. It is only like an "upper" compression... when you strum hard it clips, but you don't lose your soft touch. When you use a compressor you lose the possibility of picking soft basically, and I hate that dynamic loss. Obviously, if you base only on the album tracks, there is a little bit of compression going on, especially in Under the Bridge... but who knows if that was because of a pedal, or because of the mix/master. Anyway, He didn't use any compressor at all in live situations, so I guess that it is pretty useless. If you need to do a professional recording and you want that "Under the bridge" album attack yes, you would need a comp... but other than that, just try to get a good crunch. The Ce-1 for example crunches the signal and compresses it in the upper part

Steven Recknagel No problem. Anyway, if you have a buffered out pedal just before it you can use it on low, otherwise you should use it on high engaging the built in buffer because it has to work with low impedance!
@thomasstonehewer70376 жыл бұрын
I guess the modders are just trying to preserve the signal purity from the guitar so the playing dynamics make it through the chain to the amp. It sounds great in your video. The mod will also free up space for other pedals. What ever works best for you
@WillGalluccio6 жыл бұрын
If you have any Boss pedal in your chain before the CE-1 it would make the mod pointless since they all have a buffer inside. If not, a buffer can stay in a very small enclosure so it wouldn't even be noticed on a board basically. I still don't get that mod honestly.

Hi Will, Is there any danger to the pedal or amp's tubes if the DS2 makes the Peak light come on? Or if it comes on at all? What does the Peak light indicate?
@WillGalluccio3 жыл бұрын
No, no danger at all. It just indicates that the DS2 signal is so overwhelming that the pedal isn’t able to reproduce it entirely, and so it starts to distort/compress it.
@goldenlightchild48612 жыл бұрын
@@WillGalluccio Ok do you recommend to keep the ds2 at settings where it doesn’t Peak or it does? I want to put it on ten but I think it’s too different in bass/mid/treb than bypassed (ce1 about 7-8 low mode) and doesn’t sound noticeably different which leads me to my second question... I am having trouble getting a John-ish ds2 sound on my Marshall’s (my fender yes oddly without Ce1) so I’m thinking it might be my pickup height. What height did you put your SSL’s? I have fat 50’s now and used to have ssl-1’s. I like the guitar volume on 7-8 but I see from you (and expect with John too) it’s best on 10. But to me 10 seems a little too distorted and not clean as you and John have it. So I’m thinking it’s lowered enough to be on 10 and not sound TOO distorted and there’s no more guitar gain space (no shocking eq jump). What is your opinion? Do you agree?

No that was just to show the difference of the sound when the pedal was on and off because you can’t really turn off the crunch in the ce 1 so if u get a ce 1 or a triungulo ce 1 u don’t need anything but the pedal itself for the tone. I myself have a triungulo ce 1 and I heavily recommend it!

Thomas Stonehewer No I haven't. I know and you can simply use a buffer before it to solve the issue.

Will Galluccio - you love your CE-1... but it's just a chorus pedal with stereo out.... The preamp effect of the CE-1 is a want at best, not a need. 2 amps in stereo is far more important than the effect itself. I sold 2 CE1's after replacing with the CE2W... the CE1 was like having a paving stone on your board just for the sake of it.... and the trem kinda sucks... (and both my CE1's sounded slightly different from each other anyway)
@WillGalluccio7 жыл бұрын
You can potentially run in stereo out with every kind of pedal that allows a stereo out. But Frusciante used his amps set on "clean", so all of his dirt was coming from those "stones" :) I actually like the tremolo. There are two rev. of the CE-1, so that's why you were probably experiencing the difference. Plus I have heard of some units not cruching the signal, probably because serviced/modified through the years.
