The best fullback of my lifetime, and by quite a margin - I’m 53, by the way. His loss to League in 1990 was a monumental blow for the All Blacks.

Absolutely the best rugby fullback I had the pleasure to watch. He was an English lad, he could do it all, run like the wind, was a mean tackler, and could accurately kick penalties and conversions and could also punt the team out of trouble. He was also a sevens player, and to be selected for sevens you have to be a slick runner, tight tackler and have incredible stamina, but he could also kick the conversions. A completely forgotten player, he will always be my dream team AB full black and yes, he was the fore runner for the full backs to come, but I will always rank him the best because of his blistering speed & his tenacious tackling, but he was an absolute complete player in the 15 position as is Dan Carter the complete player in the 10 position.

In 1989 he considered the best player on the world...his loss was huge considering we couldn't find a decent replacement until Osborne and Cully...had ridgy not left he would filled the void...

To me this GUY started the trend of finding GAPS and running like a rocket through it for Fullbacks - him and Blanco were the pviot of it all - todays game we see what the fullback position has inspired too - Great Player - loved watching him play :) ABS forever

You'd never believe he was born in Lewisham (from all places in London) & played league before union, then Wellington & All Blacks. Makes national loyalty look pal against today's professional All Blacks
