For those saying its not possible, Spoilers are ahead. Hosea died, this man has the same build, sort of the same voice and the same type of demeanor. Quite nice but stubborn in certain situations. For those saying rdr1 was before 2 and R* couldn't have thought of Hosea, John mentions being shot off the train in one of the last missions of chapter six when Dutch left him, as well as others in his gang ( those who he hunts down as the BH ) same with Dutch who he ends up going for in the later game of rdr1, he mentions him in one of his early speeches to other protagonists.

Sadly, no one were there to explain. It's not for john and his family. John already has his farm at beetcher's hope since years, his family is taken by authorities. Here, it's a side mission. He's in new austin. A guy asked john to help him find a place to live around, john accepted and went to this place. He pretends it's for him and his family just because it's easier to explain, he just pretends to convince this older guy, instead of explaining "i met a man, he asked me to help him find a place... ". John just tries to convince the dude and buy the place quickly. Just to say, you can either give the money or kill this guy, then you go back to the dude who asked your help and tell him about this place. Then mission completed.

My headcanon is Hosea, knowing the gang is going to meet a bad end with Micah as Dutch's right hand, faked his death in the Saint Denis bank job. Though he was indeed shot and fell down, he was hit in a non fatal spot, and simply played dead until the pinkerton's started wrapping everything up, to which he ran off while no one was looking. The main reason he picked up a shotgun in this scene is that he suspected John to be a pinkerton or a bounty hunter.
