I don't know if Gers fans these days can really appreciate just what a legend John is. He is renowned as a great leader, a stalwart and tough as old boots. All this is true , but I saw him play many times in the flesh and he was outstandingly skillful for a defender in that era and could have played any position on the park (including goalie). He was a complete player and one of the few truly world class football talents to come out of Scotland.

Celtic fan here… i remember after the 1976 European Cup Final. Bayern Munich 1 St Ettienne 0 at Hampden I was 16 years old I was teasing John about Celtics 9 in a row and he gave me a playful slap on the back and said “ Never mind that son that’s all in the past “ an absolute Gentleman of a Man and I know that he was at the unveiling of the Billy McNeil statue in Bellshill last year and was told he was great with the people there.
